I hope people seeing this don't discount the value of surgery. Trevor was lucky that all that extra movement soon after his injury didn't make things worse. This is an isolated case so take it with a grain of salt. Otherwise, its like seeing someone win the lottery then expecting yourself to win. I have to admit, in the US I wouldn't trust the first opinion I hear, too, though. Like he said, follow your intuition. Don't be too influenced by some random KZbin video, as heart-warming as it may be.

Prolonged pressure to the spinal cord can cause nerve damage. There are a few videos on KZbin where people have lost their mobility by waiting an hour or day to get surgery. He’s lucky he didn’t lose mobility by waiting to get surgery. He doesn’t understand spinal cord injuries.
@katharinar.44633 жыл бұрын
Exactly, all the time he was waiting and also moving around, his spinal cord was still crushed. In 98% of cases the swelling and the constant pressure on the Spinal cord, would have made it so much worse and not repairing the spine right away, would usually make your chance to recover go down to none. I’m really happy for him, that all this worked out, but sadly most of the people who have a SCI are not that lucky. And one point I think that should be addressed is the use of morphine right after the injury. It’s not just for you to feel better, but with a lot of pain you also are more likely to move around, and with such a severe injury every little movement, could make it worse. It’s good to be aware of the fact that all those strong pain meds can make you addicted to, so your not using it lightly.

This guy is lucky to even still be alive with the idiocy of the things iv seen so far. He clearly has no sense on how to approach certain activities, he didnt want to do a backflip but challenged the guy to a rock, paper scissors, then after losing the bet was told that he didnt need to do a backflip, but his philosophy was that he had to. In another video where he does that huge ramp jump and nearly flies into trees, he states he was sure he only reached gear 2, and that if he wasnt in gear 3 he wouldnt have enough speed to reach the distance needed, he should have had the sense there and then to backout of the jump, which he should have. Then while in hospital, after not only speaking with his surgen.. but 5 other surgens over the phone who tell him he needs the surgery, he goes againts it. Then proceeds to get up to attempt to use the toilet. This guy is just rediculously lucky he didnt get paralised. The way he talks about needing to leave the hospital againts all medical advice just because the atmosphere scared him, is childish and immature, one of these days this guys luck will run out

From what I learned, prolonged pressure on the spinal cord can lead to permanent damage and possible immobility. In that case, doing surgery immediately is the best option. There are times when people damage their spinal cord and nerves so much by pressure that they can lose feeling and mobility with an hour or day.

@@gamebred5662 I spent an entire week attempting my first whirlybird. On the last day I decided to use my buddy's board because it was a little smaller and lighter, but the bindings were a bit tight. I was also pretty worn out from the week of attempts. I had the driver going about 24-25ish and ended up landing backwards but still tried holding on do just ride out blind but the edge caught immediately. My feet did not come out of the bindings (because they were too small) and i ended up doing a pretty bad feet down scorpion with a terrible whiplash effect. I was very disoriented and couldn't move my legs, although I could feel the pain shooting down them. Had to get pulled into the boat and driven home. I didnt go to the doctor for a year (probably biggest mistake). I just laid on the couch for about 2 weeks (with the bindings still on cause it hurt too bad to take them off lol). Started feeling better after week 2 or 3 and after a couple months got back to work and everything but I was never the same. Let's started going numb after a year and that's when I found out about the shattered vertebrae and 4 ruptured disks. Put off surgery for another year until the docs said I would be paralyzed eventually without surgery. Its been a little over 20 years now and still in a lot of pain every day.

I had a major nerve injury in my pelvis cutting off supply to most of my leg and the doctors were beyond useless, just making it worse. I was in excruciating pain with a severely atrophied leg the same size as my arm. One day my body just decided it was time to get better and I intuitively started to stretch my hamstrings. Within a week I was walking again and in a few weeks 95% healed. It took a year or two to rebuild my leg and to get rid of the lingering nerve pain down my leg but I am now back up to 100%. It was all due to tight hamstrings pulling my nerve apart. Of course with that pain I moved even less and the hamstrings get even tighter and pulled on the nerve even more, on and on. The body has an amazing ability to heal.

Yep, I made the mistake of getting back surgery and now I'm much worse. I ended up needing two more back surgeries to repair the same area because the discs kept re- herniating into my nerves (causing severe leg pain and difficulty moving my right foot). After 3 back surgeries, I'm in more pain than before my 1st back surgery. In addition, I've herniated my disc in my neck and I have terrible pain from my upper back to my shoulder and down my arm. Again, the disc is pressing on the nerve that goes down my arm. It's been almost 2 years and I still have the pain when I look up or down. So I don't know what to do. I'm afraid if I have surgery on my neck it will just make it worse (like what happened to my lower back)?

This is an amazing story. And Trevor is incredibly strong for dealing with it how he did. No painkillers is nuts. However, I think it's dangerous to tell people that if there's no internal bleeding that you should just hold off and delay surgery. Every situation is different and many people with a similar injury will be FAR worse off if they do nothing. Plus, the vast majority of people don't have access to a team of Olympic doctors and the best surgeons on earth. They have no choice. I'm not saying just rush into surgery, but usually, not always, but usually, what a medical professional tells you will be correct. Especially when we're talking life or death, walking or paralyzed. And to just do nothing at all is...honestly really stupid. The fact that he didn't end up paralyzed and that it healed is blind luck. One in a million. Also, as someone else pointed out, all that thrashing and screaming could have made the injury worse, AND it makes the nurses/doctors job much harder than it had to be. The story is very well told though. Trevor is such a tough guy. Especially with that stomach pain. I had stomach issues for many years that caused...such unimaginable pain, the worst I've ever felt in my life. I don't know if it was similar to what he was going through, but I cannot image that pain along with a fucking broken back. It's nuts he went for so long without treating his exploded spine.

This sounds like me 2 months ago when broke my hip. I couldn't move, tried to refuse the IV and the morphine, so painful going over the bumps in the ambulance, tried to tell the surgeon i didn't want screws till he told me the end of the femur would die away. After around 4 days i still hadn't gone to the toilet and one night at home i felt suddenly i was about to pass out, i managed to drag myself to the bathroom on a chair with wheels but it wouldn't fit through the door. tried with all my effort to get to the toilet to vomit but i smashed a full length mirror that a friend had moved while helping to tidy up. I spewed all over the place. It was pretty grim and finally after around 7 days i finally managed to take a dump. Things are getting better now but still a risk the bone could die away and i can get the screws out after a year. If the bone does die they will have to give me a false hip. Don't talk to me about back pain. The abuse i've put my back through. It wasn't as bad between the age of 10 and 25 but after so many falls and bad landings in so many circumstances (man you just said circumstances just after i started to type that) I'm currently seeing 3 therapists a week for my back and hip but all of that will have to stop soon as i take the healing on myself again. I've been fighting the recent bout of back pain these last 6 months and it worsened after breaking the hip standing on my bad side the entire time. Feel like i'm pulling through it all now but still stiff and limping for the moment. Feels like i've been fighting back pain almost all of my life in phases but things seem to be getting worse. I'm going to try to take greater efforts to increase mobility, better posture, less sitting, more stretching, more walking, better sleep etc.

Right before my 26th birthday I herniated my L5-S1, that was the start of a 3.5 year journey back to the use of 70% of my left leg. I am the 15% that surgery worked on, thank sweet baby jeebus. They didn't fuse it, they just went in and removed the herniated material, (discectomy / laminectomy) it took two surgeries to get it all and free my sciatic nerve from being totally pinched off. It was a rough time that I would not wish upon anyone. The rehab, the pain pill dependency, coming off pain pills cold turkey, living on the bathroom floor. Giving up hope can be pretty easy. I didnt do pain meds for 6 months, and tried to walk it off, but the herniation was never absorbed or sluffed off, so to speak. But once they started with the steroid injections and cutting me open, the pain meds came, and it was like 03/04 so pain meds were handed out like skittles on Halloween. (not bragging or making light of it, it was one of the hardest things to get over, the want to keep taking those glorious pain meds that made everything numb). Thank you for sharing. Much love.

Back pain is the worst. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Last year I got 10 compression fractures in my vertebrae (originally 9, but I didn’t follow their instructions for healing so it got worse). The pain is the absolute worst. You can’t move, cant walk normal, can’t walk down steps, can’t move your arms, it’s insane. And the pain meds barely even work. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to actually fracture your spine

I had that pale face, sweating, shaking brutal painful gas pains/constipation a few months ago and it is no joke... I can imagine it with a broken back and I’d like to never go through that ever.

Why is it that 85% of surgeries make the problem worse? If they're careful, can't they just reset the bone fragments to aid in the knitting process? Or does this process cause additional damage? just curious.

I had intestine lock when I was in hospital with spinal issues last year during covid, 13 days I went without going to the toilet. All the laxatives in the world never worked. Wasn't until I got home and a little more mobile that it came to end. My stomach hurt more than my back in the end, I'm with you on how much that socks... Horrible, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

Yeah dude, the pain from trapped gas and constipation is the most awful pain imaginable. I bet you'd say it was worse than the pain from the broken back. I've literally been in that exact same position on the toilet and I passed out into my girl's arms. Not my proudest moment haha. I can relate to that so much. Shaking and sweating. It fell like someone is stabbing you in the stomach with a hot knife. Fuck that shit.

You are right. If your back is able to heal itself you are better off. But when bones are out of place and can’t heal correctly, there’s a big chance that you will continue to refracture that same location…. Well that’s what happened in my case. The Neurosurgeon said at my age he would not recommend surgery, but because the injury went misdiagnosed for so long and I just kept doing more damage the bone was no longer trying to heal and even had bone missing altogether. First surgery went great. I woke with relief for the first time in years. He said I was doing well with everything and he wanted to just go in and add more donor bone to ensure it. Would hold up enough for me to stay on active duty and be able to run again… 2nd surgery went down 2 days later. I woke up in absolute agony. The first took 2.5hrs, the 2nd I was under for 6. I woke as they wheeled me into the recovery room screaming in pain. It’s been almost a decade now. It cost me military career and reliance on a disability check as well as my wife. I feel like anything I do with others that they limit what they do based on me and I hate myself. I am on so many different medications that my Pee could probably be considered a controlled substance and prohibited from flushing down the toilet. I can’t tell you what I take but I can tell you when I’ve missed one. Everything that surgery was going to benefit in me having it has been taken away. All because I hurt my back one day while swapping out a part on my aircraft at work and the military Doctor said it’s just chronic back pain… re-fractured the same location at least a half dozen times(according to the civilian doctor). I’ve often wondered if I could remove all the pain by cutting off my leg at the knee if I would or not But I’m told I can’t think like that. I’m so tired of hurting. I’m tired all the time and have had to give up every hobby/interest I’ve had. I don’t wish this on anyone. Oh and the stomach problems are also caused by the swelling in your back. I pass gas maybe once a day, in the evening when I lay on my left side. It’s sort of disturbing how much comes out. And maybe go number two once a week. It gets so bad I may eat a meal a day and am so backed up I’m breathing hard from lack of space for my lungs to fill up.

In 97 I broke my sacrum, 9 vertebrae, 5 ribs and my nose. Landed similar to you on solid ice (snowboarding). It felt like I was shocked and know now it was the impact and nerves. Before going unconscous, I couldnt feel my legs. Not having insurance and being young and dumb, I denied ambulance and had to get on a snowmobile to get a ride to the parking lot = intense pain! Last August, I broke my T12 again. Im 45 and my back lools like one a 90 year old laborer would have. Chronic pain sucks! No more skydiving, BASE, kayaking, climbing etc. I do paraglide, or plan to again when my back is somewhat solid after the latest break. You play, you pay!

Glad your ok man! I broke my leg in 3 spots back in july 2018 and the doctors wanted to do surgery but i refused it and it healed just fine but took longer to heal. If i would of done surgery they would have to rebreak it and there was a chance it wouldn't of healed properly. You are definitely right about waiting to make the choice on surgery because there can be a lot of risk if there's a good chance you can heal naturally.

Man. Wow. This was both horrible and amazing to watch. What a legend. I learned the hard way on emergency surgeries and eventually learned I could wait and search out the best surgeons. Most doctors for professional sports teams also have private practices and will take new patients. I found far better results taking my time calling sports teams finding out who their surgeons / orthos were and going to them.

I totally understand if someone doesnt want to take meds for an injury BUT let me say this just because you do or if you are in a bad accident and need help it doesnt mean that your going to turn into a drug addict or that your life will get fucked up. Of course there is a possibiity that you could but if u take them how your doctor says and come off them when you supposed and to the way your doctor recommends you will be fine. Oh and yes i work in the medical field

Just fyi, opioids are almost always used during general anesthesia. If you've not had an abuse problem before, it's usually not a problem. But using it as a pain killer after surgery for an extended time period is a really bad idea. If the pain gets too much, something like NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen, diclofenac), paracetamol or, where I live, metamizole is the way to go. I also don't really understand why it had to be morphine or nothing on the way to hospital. I mean there are non-opioid options.

i did the same thing with my L5 & S1 except my injury happened in 98 before we had the knowledge of pain pill addiction fucked my life still never had surgery and went through more pain and suffering coming off those pain meds than my back could have ever caused in my belief

A priest at my granny's local church was jumping at some russian army event with soldiers and his parachute didn't open till the very last seconds. I think he crushed into a hangar roof with parachute barely slowing him down or something like that. He recovered after all. Broken back and probably legs, I believe, but some time later he was back at church walking and acting as if nothing happened.

Had quite a few of those myself friend. In the beginning Trevor talks about triggers and going into that scene. This is what my old skydiving friends don't understand, they think I just don't care about them anymore, I'm just not on FB so I only know when I run into one and we catch up. I can't go out there without jumping, I love it too much and I'm a sky junkie, so I can't go out there and just hang at the DZ. I miss all of them so much, had over 500 jumps. If I go, I will jump, it's just that simple, for me at least. Spine is so wasted, one weird landing, or hard opening, and I don't walk anymore, and I like walking. Hope you are doing better now.

Wow. What an interesting story. I’ve studied psychology as well and I’m also just a person that tends to question everything and do my research. I’ve heard a lot of similar stories about the power of thought. Now I do believe there ought to be a balance. Medical intervention AND eating healthy and meditating is often the best way to do it. Because you can go too far in either direction. It still surprises me that hospitals don’t focus enough on diet and nutrition. That’s so important to health and healing. It seems counterproductive to give someone medical intervention and then feed them a bunch of processed bullshit and an overload of carbs and sugar.
