My mom used to call me insatiable, reckless and fearless. Tha one day i was going to lose my teeth. I think that was a premonition, because I was always all that and although I lost my teeth in an operating room, it could have been on any of the trips I took during 15 years in Bitácora. In this chapter We went on a tour of the Portuguesa state in 2004.
It was not a tourist region, just the barn of Venezuela. But we knew about several attractions and we always had to discover, innovate, and support new destinations.
So, we went there on a problematic journey from the moment we took off. The director of 10 years had resigned. They hired a boy to testing him. There was another one for support. The director of photography was the same for a few years, my director later and now: Branimir Caleta.
We went to some dams, to Ospino where they sold pork rind, to the virgin Coromoto's temple, To Guanare's center to know of its history but we needed the nature.
I wen't once to the Saint's Miguel, on a pre-tour. Trips I took with my photographer friend Pablo Krisch. We were shocked by that powerful waterfall that fell from that rock in the middle of a forest along a super steep path, first by car through hard ups and downs, river crossings and finally walking, so I included it in the trip. Almost there was a vine, it was not necessary to jump with it, a little jump and that's it. But caution was not with me in those years and i swore that i was immortal. Everything seemed fun, simple, normal to me and i was already 50 years old. I held on hard with my hands and feet and they pushed me. When I saw that I was going to crash into the century-old tree and lose my teeth, my nose and everything, I let go of my legs to separate myself from the tree and I knew I was going to fall.
The vine was wet, my arms couldn't hold up, the push made me reach a lot of speed, I screamed for them to grab me, but there was no chance. The fall was recorded. Getting me out of there took almost 3 hours. We were very far away. I fractured my acetabulum. The big hip bone.
When my daughter Arianna came to pick me up the next day with my sister Inés, I asked her to stay to finish the episode.
I couldn't believe it. Now that I think about it, I can see my obsession with work. Totally irrational at one point, so asking that to my daughter who was so frightened. But she did it. And she did it very very well. I had never seen that episode again. 19 years have passed. It shook me very much. It shook me. It made me think. And I was delirious with tenderness watching my daughter please her mother. Ariana was 24 years old.
They cut the vine. And since then, they tell all visitors that's where Valentina Quintero fractured her hip.
