It actually isn't. The top 15-20 supports in both challenger and emerald barely consist of any mages, unless you consider enchanters to be mages and enchanters are typically designed to be supports and even then they don't even make up 40% of the top 15-20. People like running mages as supports because it's fun and people like trying different things, but as for meta sake it very much ISNT the meta. Edit: I will say that there is one other cause that also enables mages to be ran as supports and that's due to counter picking not being prevalent in low elo or quick play. Karma who everyone knows is busted as all hell has a low WR in challenger as support and isn't even top 20, but her 3 counter picks are all top 10 leaving her with no room to exist.
