In this video, we build a section of exhaust pipe that could, or, could not be used in place of a Diesel Particulate Filter on a farmer's tractor. It would be illegal to do so, and I certainly would never recommend anyone do it.

In the case of CEE, I don’t think Kurtis and Karen would endorse or doing something like this, let alone film if for global broadcasting. They seem very sensitive and compliant to any environmental laws, which seem significant down under. It’s been awhile since I have supported the yellow mothership in off road diesel engine air regulatory support to OEM equipment manufacturers, but I would think Canada had environmental laws equal to or greater than US EPA. If that piece of equipment was built in US for export, almost certainly it was built to Canadian environmental standards too. I would be shocked if Canada is less stringent laws than the US. I recall a discussion being passed on to me of a Q&A session between the EPA and equipment owners, may have been a public meeting or webinar. A user challenged the EPA if they have the enforcement capability to cover and enforce the sheer numbers of engines in the public space, the EPA’s response was, “ your chance of being caught may be as little as being struck by lightning but if you get caught the ramifications would be equal to you being struck!” This is serious business, you best not hold up a 30 ft metal poles in a thunderstorm on KZbin!

Ive driven truck for long enough to have seen the difference from non DPF to DPF, I noticed a severe reduction in fuel mileage initially! Even today's trucks don't get the fuel efficiency of the trucks in the late '90's (9-12 mpg) and to add to it the added cost of DEF fluid, add to that the fact that the pre DPF trucks sucked more dirty air through the air filters than they put out the exhaust stack! Europe did this about 15 years before California forced the rest of North America to comply.... and they got rid of it because of its lack of dependability and cost to repair outweighed the profitability! You'd think we North Americans would leave it behind like Europe did! Just goes to show you!

the air has gotten cleaner in california, reduce of smog, and less harmful particles in the air they are effective at what they are suppossed to be, the fuel mileage at least in europe in semis has been lowered significantly from 35L /100km to 25-28 L/100km while having stronger engines (trucks with g.w. of 90000 pounds) than ever before.... of course they are expensive and finnicky but they do work.

@@gnaedigerfels true, but if I'm not mistaken they did it without the added cost of DPF, the understanding I'm under is the DPF systems we're so unreliable that they got away from it 10-15 years before California mandated it on North American trucking. Which would beg the question...why would North America adopt a failed program? BTW, Navistar (International trucks) was pursuing "in cylinder " technology but eventually abandoned it due to their carbon points running out before the technology was viable!

Nice work, but what are you thinking? Do you watch any youtube videos? Last year 3 shops with youtube channels got $150k fines. One of them did not install a system, they fabricated a part. For a contractor piece of equipment. Judge said he knew the intent of the part and it is illegal now to fab delete parts. They wanted the name of the customer but he said no. He was held in content until he gave up the name and the contractor got a $15k fine. I watched this story on youtube as the shop owner was doing his last video and negotiating a lower fine or he was going to lose his shop. I am all for the farmers. I sell tractors for a living and we need your help, but why not keep this quiet. Unless you are looking to argue with some government knucklehead.

Well done sir. I run modern Caterpillar, Komatsu, John Deere equipment in Northern Ontario, Short of something physically breaking on the machine, 98% of breakdowns are due to the dpf system. Not like the system does much, it just injects Uria into the exhaust to keep the visible soot from the diesel engine down. So it stays in the engine, oil and pipes leading to more wear over time.
@DanSav76
@DanSav76 4 ай бұрын
@@SilvaDreams an active dpf system for a diesel engine is terribly complex, there are pumps to and from the urea tank, engine coolant loop to warn the urea tank, pumps for the diesel injection, back pressure sensors, urea tank sensors, glow plug system, computers to run the burn cycle not even to mention urea freezes, shouldn't be stored in 30+ degrees, or the entirely new economy of pollution produced by Def jugs or chemicals used to clean the honeycomb filters. To say it 'just injects urea into the exhaust" is not accurate. I agree with you, a lot of tech and headaches for a problem that would be solved by industry regardless as better technologies evolve.

@DanSav76 I'm well aware of the parts of the system but it doesn't change what I said. All it truly does is reduce a visually "scarry" puff of carbon dust for the environmental nuts that is essentially harmless.

Ex trucker, DPF's are okay when they work properly, the probelm with them is if they start to plug early for whatever reason or if the system doesn't work it very quickly becomes an expensive problem that you have to fix to get the vehicle to run. I had a truck that would regen once per week, never had an issue with the DPF. Ive also had trucks that regen 2-4 times per day and it is annoying AF. Excessive Regening can also lead to other problems such as the vehicle catching fire or your bank account emptying.
@CGT80
@CGT80 4 ай бұрын
Yep, I like the DPF on my diesel pickup. It is nice to not smell the exhaust or have as much soot at the back of the truck and it is quiet for long rides. For a while I would get a DEF error message but it has gone away. Chevy gave a 100k mile warranty on the exhaust on my 2020 truck.....hopefully I don't need to use it or have to pay out of pocket after. My brother wasn't so lucky with his 2019 truck but he lets his idle a lot. Like many good ideas, they can turn bad for various reasons.
@CL-yp1bs
@CL-yp1bs 3 ай бұрын
You probably drove. Its these truckers that are sitting idling and not driving that are clogging up their DPFs. Drive instead of sitting at the truck stop, and you keep that DPF clean much much longer.
@CGT80
@CGT80 3 ай бұрын
@@CL-yp1bs The problem is that they have limits to the number of hours they can drive and they need power and heat or ac. It looks like dealing with DPFs is another reason for trucks to have APUs so they can run those and not the truck, but it also adds more expense. I'm not sure much fuel an average truck burns idling vs. an APU but would think the APU would take less if it isn't always running at full capacity.

Why not just use a 5 inch coring bit and core thru the dpf filter, put a pipe inside and put it back on, so that it is all original in appearance, so that if the epa comes out all the equipment is in place. You could charge more for the fix, it would take a few more hours, but all appears as normal. I have done this method previously and the dpf still heats up for testing purposes, just the gasses are different

The DEF system in trucks and buses and cars are different than the farming equipment DEF systems. The main difference is that if the boss DEF system is not working, it still can drive for like 2000 km and then fix it but in the farming equipment is DEF not working you have to wait for a part for the mechanic, a lot of times up the week to get it fixed and meanwhile you cannot feed your cow spray your fields or collect grain from the fields when it’s dry. So the DEF system is really good for the environment, but it is the knife under the neck when it’s not working for farmers.

DPF filters don’t actually solve the emissions problem, they just kick it down the road to landfills, modern common rail VGT turbocharged diesel engines are already the cleanest burning diesels ever produced. When tuned properly they’re incredibly efficient. Really the standards should be based around amount of “work” done for fuel used, because an engine that burns less fuel will have lower emissions due to them really just burning fuel with air at a target air fuel ratio, but something like that makes sense and would potentially help the environment, not a thing governments really do. People really should push back on their regulators and institute solutions that both protect the environment but also the profitability of their business, because if a farmer has to spend more to do his job we all have to spend more to eat, thus making all our work more expensive, it quickly snowballs and that’s why the cost of everything has spiraled like it has.
@CGT80
@CGT80 4 ай бұрын
How do DPF (no need to say filters twice, same as NIC card in the computer world) kick it down the road to landfills and not solve the problem. The soot is captured and then burned off, not sent to landfills, at least when working properly. The only thing I notice from a regen is heat, not soot, and it doesn't stink like diesel exhaust. Without the DPF the emissions go into the air and I see and smell it. If you are talking about the dpf going to the landfill, I would assume they would be recycled...at least the body of them. Your statement doesn't make sense, even with common rail diesels being the cleanest.

Great work, though, considering the increased crack down on manufacturers, I wouldn't be posting something like this myself. Might be more lax up there than it is here state side.

NO issues doing it here in Canada surprisingly there is way way less over reach for such matters in Canada and it falls under provincial jurisdiction NOT federal also..

A well tuned diesel runs clean, no smoke. The "emissions" equipment (aka EPA scam) kills reliability, fuel efficiency, and power. Edit: Plus all that emissions equipment adds thousands of dollars to the window sticker of a new vehicle or equipment.

in the uk its not actually illegal to remove emissions control if it stays on private land, on the annual road safety check that cars have to go through here they test emmissions levels and check the emissions control devices are still fitted, crazy thing is that most cars will still pass the emissions tests without the control devices, but theyll still fail it for not having them

Diesel Particulates are harmful so filters are a good thing. However the issue is mandating an unsuitable technology to be used in ag equipment. DEF was developed for trucks / commercial vechiles, when it's a perfect homogeneous mixture it's freezing point is -11 C, which is bad enough, but urea has a greater density than water so the two can separate over time so things can start to break at 0 C. The regulations should have stuck with mandating the permitted levels of particulates rather than a specific technology be used, so that ag could use whatever methods are suitable for their local environment. Whoever mandated DEF in Canada has zero understanding of the Canadian environment and I'm saying this as someone from the UK.

The DPF has nothing to do with DEF they are separate systems, once catches particulates with a regenerative filter (DPF) and other reduces NOX emissions via an SCR catalyst with use of urea (DEF)....

Y does the pipe look shorter than the DPF and wat happens to the sensors and pipes that conect to the dpf
@schwuzi
@schwuzi 3 ай бұрын
The sensors will get a software update which makes them no longer needed. For testing purposes of course. Only a temporary measure. It's done to diagnose issues with the DPF system. A byproduct of this testing is increased power output, reliability and lower fuel consumption. Oh and some black smoke. The smoke is bad so it's only used for testing purposes and only temporary. Of course.

Never admit to breaking any laws, all you did was make a test rig for the farmer to eliminate the DPF as an item of concern or for the farmer to leak-test the remainder of the exhaust system

A DEF fluid delete program would burn out the DPF, so delete the DPF as well.
