As a quick summary and update on the pole break, the original issue was the metal ferrule/insert coming unglued. That was with a pole set that I did mention ahead of time was a pre-production poleset and not built with the normal construction methods. During actual production Easton does a push/pull test on every ferrule so we'll have these glued well in place on the production tents. When the ferrule did slide out of position and was replaced by a sleeve, the sleeve creates stress points at the ends (as mentioned) because the sleeve leverages all the force that is normally distributed onto a small focus point at the end. This is especially the case when the sleeve is oversized like the first one here. That oversized sleeve creates leverage and focused stress, which caused the other breaks (as you mention). I don't think this is representative of normal use or even repair with a fitted sleeve. I suspect most tent poles would break fairly easily with an oversized sleeve. If the sleeve was sized for the poles (like the orange tubing at the end) the stress would be better distributed and not leveraged. So I am confident this was a pre-production gluing issue and a domino effect from there relative to the sleeve (especially being oversized). The actual poles we use are the same poles used by quite a few other brands (e.g. Samaya, Tarptent, Big Agnes, MSR) and here we are using dual archs of the smaller size (on the ends) or a single arch of the large size (on top) so it is quite a bit stronger than many other CF tents that use a single arch of the smaller size. Without the stress point of the sleeve, the poleset is normally several times stronger than the aluminum polesets in comparable tents, and I expect it to do very well in windy conditions without that issue and when pitched for the conditions (e.g. guylines when appropriate, optional trekking pole supports if really windy). This incident does raise a good question about the repairability of CF. It probably does crack easier than aluminum if there is a focused stress point like this. But also an oversized sleeve is pretty hard on all poles. A better fitting sleeve like the one at the end would be much better, and also having a little flex in the sleeve would distributing stresses much better (e.g. a composite/plastic sleeve that is pretty stiff but with a bit of give to it would distribute stress more). Ideal fix though would be a replacement section. We will certainly have those available. Cheers, Dan

I think that this video was released in a hasty manner and really tells us nothing about the actual tent that customers will purchase. Half the video is spent explaining the broken pole situation rather than going into useful specs and pros and cons (although there is some of that). I think getting this video out before other KZbinrs could clouded Steve’s judgment here, and in the end gives a negative vibe to a tent that doesn’t necessarily deserve one

While not a Durston user/customer myself, I find this video to be ballsy. Putting up a prototype in windy conditions and seeing a pole snap multiple times. Then again, clear explanation on the loose alu connections, easily fixable production wise, not a 'carbon failure'. For a true 4-season tent I'd like a full fabric inner with mesh panel(s) integrated. I'm a medium-weight hiker, boots and >2kg 4s 1p tent; I appreciate the comfort of sturdiness (and then some). If I'd ever choose a lightweight tent again, this one, at least the '2025 with full inner', seems very attractive. Love to see more upcoming videos using/testing this tent.

Fixing the metal grommet coming loose is something that happens all the time on basically every pole set I've owned (carbon, aluminum, etc.) from every company (marmot, north face, MSR, etc.). It takes 5 seconds to fix with by pushing the grommet back out with something skinny (coat hanger) and then putting a dab of glue. The "repair" in the video is egregiously bad and doomed the poles to fail.

Why did you not just push the metal grommet back out with a coat hanger or similar and put a bit of glue on it? Using such an oversized repair sleeve seems like you were hoping the carbon would break due to the tremendous surprise leverage forces you are putting on the carbon. Works nice for views and controversy I guess. I've had the same metal grommets come loose on my Marmot and North Face tents (who use Aluminum poles) and it is a quick fix.

I ordered this tent cuz Durston has earned my (and many other people’s) trust by now. Though I’m curious to see how this tent stacks up to the X Mid tents in storm. The thing with the x mid is that it has fewer breakable parts and could be adjusted and repaired more easily when needed. The caveat is that you need to pitch it properly for it to reach full potential. With this tent though, I feel like it would probably last longer before it collapses in the wind. It’s also a lot easier to pitch for it to achieve max sturdiness and is definitely easier to move around. But at the same time, once the pole breaks, it looses its functionality as a shelter against wind completely and will require some spare parts to repair. I think the cost to replace the carbon fiber poles would also be higher than the cost to replace a set of trekking poles(especially if they are not made out of carbon fiber). But at the end of day, not super concerned as long as the factory doesn’t f this up.

The Durston design really shines in a one-person tent: - 2 lb total - Polyester > Nylon - Loads more internal and vestibule space - Sets up dry in the rain - Storm worthy (when not broke) - Magnetic tie backs - Long enough for tall hikers - Wide enough for internal gear/dog Dan is just so good at addressing all of the complaints individuals have with an entire category of tents. Feels like the first 1P free-standing tent that's actually worth consideration versus taking the weight penally for a 2P counterpart. Excited to see what he does with the two person X-Dome next year!

Hi Kurt. The issues in the video are essentially just a pre-production gluing issue on the poles (we test for this during actual production) and then further breaks caused by an oversized sleeve creating stress points. It's not representative of how the tent would actually fair with a production poleset and tighter sleeve.
@pedro1970maya

If faced with bad sleeves, even with good ones, reinforce with duct tape, of course, a few inches on and padt the sleeve edges to absorb energy and prevent splintering. Also tuck a mini strip of tape, or paper, or anything soft and thin into the sleeve edge first to eliminate some of the sharpness.

Main reason to bring a tent is bugs. That's what's so great about integrated bugnets of X-mid Pro's. Holding-out for: 1) DCF, 2) Integrated-bugnet, 3) Two-doors, 4) Shaving some ounces off this boat-anchor (just-kidding, it's a great sil-poly design.). Steven's a pretty tough grader. Once again, Mr Durston's design is 'Best-in-Class' on the first go. ...The reason for two-doors is cross-ventilation, not just access.

I bought a Tarptent Scarp 1 with the aluminum cyclone poles for a trip to Iceland last August. The inner tubing on one of the pole sections came unglued and slipped into the pole section. Exactly the same issue as what happened in this video. I was able to continue using the tent by using the “splint” tube over the section that could no longer connect. This was a real pain to deal with halfway through my backpacking trip, but it worked. When I got home I called Tarptent and they suggested it was due to a bad batch of poles from Easton and sent me a new one. And they assured me this wouldn’t be a problem going forward. I’ve never seen or heard of this being a problem in the past, but I guess it is now with these ultralight poles? Also, I thought Tarptent had sent me the carbon fiber poles by mistake initially just because they do look and feel just like carbon fiber.

Why? The price, the weight, max height inside and the Rogen is not free standing. They also use nylon and not polyester as the outer fabric. Btw, I think Hilleberg make excellent tents. I even own one myself, but light weight is not their strength. Almost all Scandinavian made tents used to be designed for setting up the outer first, now there are more exceptions but it's by far the most common design. I'd probably go for the Niak if I wanted a 1+/2 person tent from Hilleberg. It's not free standing though.

My thought is that I sleep on my left side and like to be facing the door. In this tent that is impossible with just one door. Also I don't care for the smaller end where your feet would go, with this set up I would have to have my head there. Again , not opposite the door. A 2nd door would cover that problem. As far as the polls breaking don't camp in a wind tunnel or in my case here in Florida during a Hurricane. Or applying excessive pressure to them when setting the tent up. Curious what might be in the plans for later down the trail , a 2 person one ?

Looks like the breaks were a matter of both production defect and user error in the repair. Looks like a really promising tent, but I also think it's a shame it didn't have the X crossing poles. It would probably make for simpler poles, better wind resistance, with a small increase in weight.
@durstongear
@durstongear 2 сағат бұрын
We had full X poles in early prototypes, but it is stronger/lighter to combine them into a single arch across the top. Unlike quite a few other tents, we use larger tubing across the top so it is not a weakpoint. It gives the strength of dual arches, but slightly lighter to use a single larger tube and with advantages like better vent positions and the ability to use a hub to connect the cross bar instead of a separate piece.
@SchmakerSchmoo
@SchmakerSchmoo 2 сағат бұрын
The "X" crossing of the poles would mean more exposed vestibules, smaller doorways, no ability to add trekking pole supports, and smaller diameter carbon in the middle. I also don't see how it would be any lighter or more stormworthy - especially considering it cannot be augmented with the trekking poles. It would be simpler though. You can see tarptent's dome tent with the "x" layout and the doorway is almost comically small - and that is on a 2 man tent.

I disagree Steve's videos appear to be pretty unbiased. Yes the timing was considered but most reviews release close to launch of a product anyway. "Bad" publicity is still good publicity. He seemed pretty transparent in the video. Being this is also the first prototype of this design, its helpful to educate all of possible outcomes. Dan probably knows Steve does "unscientific" test but they can be helpful in real world scenarios.

@BigDawgCAM
@BigDawgCAM 3 сағат бұрын
It's 90" long so probably 6'6"/2m?
@HunterJE
@HunterJE 3 сағат бұрын
From the FAQ on the preorder listing: If you sleep "straight" (along the backwall) in the X-Dome 1+ then the length is 85" and with the steep end walls that is almost all quite useable, so the length is about average for a tent and should work to about 6'2". However, the unique trapezoid shape of the floor allows you to sleep on a diagonal (like our X-Mid series) which adds 5" of length so it is excellent for taller hikers with about 90" of length. We recommend the tent up to 6'6" when sleeping on this diagonal but the actual max height can be more or less depending on individual factors like sleeping bag size, how straight you sleep, and how much room you expect.

I have just retired my Durston X-mid pro 2 after a disappointing amount of use. I really wanted to support a Canadian company. I could detail all the problems here. There were several. Compared to the previous dyneema tent that I used made by Z-Pak t his one has not been anywhere near as durable. Compare five years of very hard constant use against less than one. 5:1 🤔 It’s great to see you all support Durston as they continue to grow however, I can’t afford to do that as I am on a dogpacking world tour. Best of luck to Durston as they grow 🤘

I'm not sure what issues you had but if you get in touch we are happy to help. Mostly the tent uses the same materials as your previous Zpacks tent. We use the same DCF and zippers as they do. There were a few weaker spots in the first run (e.g. pole tip connections) that we have since improved and can easily retrofit that construction on your tent if it has been an issue. Mostly the Pro tents have been working well though. So I'm sorry you had issues and we are happy to help with those.

Are you even qualified to test any tents🤣? I mean, you’re known to struggle with the „wrong side door“ on the Gossamer Gear’s The Two tent. It really was the back door on that very tent, while the other side remains on the correct side in perspective to its entry point of the fly sheet. No front👀 Btw, not convinced that the magnetic tie outs permanently withstand such gale force winds ( from outside or from the inside of the tent 😅)

I’ve seen Dan’s video (and website) that keeps referring to it as ‘Stormworthy’ and even a ‘4 season tent’ at one point. It’s a joke. I really like the tent, and can’t wait to try one out, but it’s a summer tent. There’s nothing wrong with that, there’s just no need to massively exaggerate its capabilities.

I agree with you 100% Andy. I wouldn’t fancy being high on a hill in bad weather with those thin poles and lack of guy out lines. I’m convinced the walls of the tent would be bending in on me - and that’s if it stayed upright and in one piece. I have an X-Mid 1 solid which is great for most UK camps, but there are times when I’d definitely use a stronger and warmer shelter. The X-Dome wouldn’t tick that box for me.
