instead of using a comparators for the backpack check, you could use create smart observers, since they check if their set item/block is in front of them, meaning it would work for empty backpacks.

Just yesterday, I entered a vault with just the pouch I have on my belt. Was at like level 27, so the amount of loot wasn't going to be that big, but still way more than that could handle. Luckily I noticed it before starting the timer, so I set up the void upgrade on the pouch to toss away as much useless crud as possible. Luckily I had some gold in that pouch, because I found a Vendoor in the first room selling a double pouch that eased my problems quite a bit. After that, I put up a sign in front of my portal that says "REMEBER POUCHES", quite a low effort solution compared to yours :D
