Very strange about the nut, with lock tight etc. Shows how good the old castellated nut and split pin were. I know there was no option with this nut though. I Would LOVE to get round there with my old Land Rover Trialer, looked like great fun. I was an Off Road driving Instructor for Land Rover for just over 20 Years, the colour of your ML tells me you were going through the dirty water too fast, but then fast through the water is good fun. Otherwise you driving looked good. One piece of advice, when you have wheel spin going on, sometimes turning left and right about 1/4 turn quickly can throw the drive across the front axle finding a bit of available grip. You dont want huge amounts of revs on at the same time though 🙂

At 2:55 is the best shot of the top wishbone ball joint and it kind of looks like the nut is on there but it's hard to tell as everything is the same muddy brown colour and brake line flexi pipe is partly in the way, It most probably stripped the threads off the nut with you removing the sway bar/antiroll bar and on full articulation (droop) all the weight of the hub assembly and wheel pulling down on that top ball joint just stripped the threads out of the nut.

I had my alternator die at the racetrack, bought one from a guy for 20 bucks and it charged, but got about halfway home and it started making a noise like bolts being thrown against the side of a metal shed above 2500rpm. My Land Cruiser transfer case doesn’t hold a ton of gear oil, but I’m a nut about changing it I probably do it at least 2 times a year. Same with the transmission fluid, I used to never change mine but it’s so easy with a drain plug I do it all the time. always looks new now but I still do it.

You're awesome Alex! Oh and the hard to easy scale is ALWAYS 10 is Hardest! LOL. I just did the Voltage regulator on my E46 M3 and it was so much cheaper than doing a full Alternator swap! I think most if not all Bosch alternators have that as an option. Very cool. ROCK ON!
@GeFeldz Жыл бұрын
22:05 That's an important point =D The AMG ML wasn't really designed for offroading with GIANT TIRES =) It was probably engineered for some offroading with stock size tires, but mostly for handling and good grip in snow and ice. With the power and torque combined with the HUGE difference in forces and loads on the whole driveline with massively oversized tires, it's a wonder the thing doesn't just eat axles and transfer cases the first time one of the rear wheels slip. Remember that larger diameter wheels will increase the load on the whole driveline almost exponentially, because there's a longer lever (the diameter from the center of the wheel to the outer edge) resisting the power/torque and also the shock loads while offroading.
@stuartd9741 Жыл бұрын
Although true. I'd trh ML is in low range that would increase the torque of the engine. .. Also there usually some redundancy (over engineering ) built-in to the drive line On 90s cars it could have been as high as 80%.. I'm sure Mercedes drive lines are pretty strong...
