as some have mentioned, the DS fat screen is backlit, but more importantly, it is also "transflective". This means it allows a backlight to shine thru from behind, but at the same time will reflect a stronger light such as sunlight from the front. On a sunny day this feature is quite useful and in comparison a pure transmissive display would usually not have a strong enough backlight to outshine natural sunlight and appear dim. as you might expect "transflective" screens are naturally dimmer when backlit and have less contrast compared to transmissive LCD displays, which became a lot more common, maybe until OLED takes over one day. However, as most GBA games are designed for the GBA and GBA SP frontlit, the DS fat display is actually adequate for these titles. sometimes the colour and contrasts are even more authentic than newer displays, while better than the pure reflective displays on the GBA and GBA SP frontlit.

This is such a cool mod. When I worked at toy store a few years I was there on launch day for the DS. We used to call it a "Volkswagen" because of it's size and color. Thing was huge for a portable system. Things had a tendency to break like the one in the video. Now you can salvage them.

You could have also just 3D Printed a NDS Original Macro top plate which would look cleaner but would require a little bit of sanding, you could also just take the same STL file and go to a company like PCBWAY and have them print the top shell out of Stainless Steel or Aluminum (They also do painting so you can pick any color) its the best option for a professional looking Macro from the original NDS.

I can tell you now, if the DS was consolised, I'd want the fat one as a controller. It has the best d-pad, the most comfortable spacing for my hands, the best triggers, and phenomenal speakers. If the fat DS got an ips mod, it would 100% be the best DS to play.

Definitely an interesting mod and a great way to give an old broken ds new life. I don't see a lot of og ds mods so this was very refreshing! I'd probably try to fill the holes with gunpla plastic that's been melted down and I'd probably have tried to shape the hinge area to round on the edges. If I happen across an og ds I may make my own!

I've done one of these in the past. It was on a damaged Red DSXL the Mario themed one. It's been sitting on the backburner as I didn't know how to clear off the middle top section and make it look nice. I might use this method at some point. I also am guilty of placing the speaker in the rear, mostly because I didn't think it would fit on the front, and I had found a space behind the console. Definitely not an ideal final spot though. The Macro XL is my favorite version of the mod, mostly because the GBA slot sits the game flush to the console and it's a big one for me. I do wish BoxyPixel would put out a shell for the Macro XL.

Cool video mate 👍 I would of used epoxy glue then just trimmed it with a cutting blade that would be a little bit more permanent and reinforce the plastic aswell. That front facing speaker idea though 👌 I'm well gonna use that🙂

Nice budget build! I prefer the DS Lite for the size and the great screen. I recently built a Gameboy Macro and used the black original case, as the Boxy Pixel aluminum face plate was quite expensive. I added an acrylic light pipe with bubbles between the hinges and a blue led. It turned out really good. I ended up removing the DS cartridge slot and added two Iphone 7 speakers for stereo sound, as those speakers are designed for the sound to come out of the top, not the front like a DS or Switch speaker. Now the sound comes out of the the DS cartridge slot [no holes to drill].

So I'm curious. I have seen that with the DS lite that you can take the ribbon cable, and remove the cable, speakers, and LED strip from the top screen completely. thus if you can fit it into the bottom shell, you can make a "Gameboy Macro" without soldering. Kinda curious if that works with an original model DS as well, and if anyone's designed a shell with this idea is mind for the original DS.

Just ordered a new backlight for my gameboy color! Excited to get another one I got my last one and finished it and it looks great so I have a good feeling about this next one. Also I really enjoy how you try to make these mods affordable so that everyone can have a chance to do it because although modding consoles is a fun thing to do it can get pretty expensive so sometimes it’s good to take some shortcuts that’ll save some money!

I know this is a budget build but...I really want a top tier one(for DS, not GBA macro). DS fat is known as the best form factor os all DS, and the best buttons. The bad thing of it is the screen. If I could slap some IPS(or the ones of DS Lite) screens on it and a AA battery mod(it sucks to find new original batteries for it, the bootleg ones don't stand even 15 minutes outside the charger) it would be LIT.

This is really helpful. I turned on my DS the other day, for the first time in a year or so only to find the battery had died, so I ordered replacement. When I got it up and running again I was dismayed to find a few lines, as if the pixels were dead, running partially along the top screen and also a small section of the bottom screen. It’s a shame as I keep it in a protective case, so really not sure what has happened? Is there a way to carry out this mod with something bigger and better, like an ISP V2? All 3 of my DS Phats now have 1 screen with the grey lines (2 top screens and a bottom screen) that developed within the past year while they were in storage. No physical damage to any of them, so I wonder if it was temperature related somehow? Wish someone would make an adapter ribbon cable for a DS Lite or DSi screen on these.

I started the project scavaging the speaker of the original DS and I can't find a spot that allow me to close the console other than putting it in the back facing in the other way. Is the original speaker powerful enough to be used in this way? I will probably put it where the DS cartitge reader goes (because its pretty broken) to avoid that I block him while I grab it.

The middle 3 out of your list is all optional hence no cost added unless you want it and the price of the resistor was cost per resistor not cost per package of resistors. And he said at the end that it's that price *provided* you already have the DS. So the only real cost to this is the resistor itself. Also, where are you finding a secondhand DS that's 50+ everything I see is between 15-35

It seems the DS Phat has less ghosting/motion blur then the DS lite? e.g. Black outlines don't become as boldened when I move vertically in Pokemon using the DS Phat. That seems like a significant pro?

hey so i have some issues, when i solder in the wires for the speaker, it keeps on turning off and on but no image. but when i unsolder them it works fine but no sound. im using the original speakers and i put them in the back and i did everything in the video

I would double check to make sure you are soldering the speaker to the correct points and also make sure that any metal on the speaker is not contacting the pcb. See if that works. Best of luck!

Great question Erik! I haven’t seen any pre made shells made specifically for the macro mod on an original DS. There are several options for the DS Lite version however. As far as I know there is no way to upgrade the LCD unfortunately. Hopefully we’ll get something in the future. Cheers!

I’m sure one could be. But currently I don’t think that option exists. I’m hoping someone would develop a mod that could add an IPS to the DS line of consoles. That would be fantastic!

this not an XL, use a DSi XL to mod for that... this is a "normal" macro....

@@MachoNachoProductions not physical carts, but you can play gb/gbc/gba either from flash cart like dstwo, or from homebrew menu, like twighlight.

I don’t actually have any repro games but I do use my flash cart a lot. I have just a few GBA authentic games, but as I’m sure you are aware, they can get pretty pricey. Great question though! Do you have any reproduction games or a flash cart? I’d be curious what your experience is like. I’ve heard mixed things about repros. Cheers!

@@MachoNachoProductions sorry it just looked like the Metroid zero game that you had was a reproduction game based on the game boy advance logo was more deep than shallow, personally I don't buy or sell reproduction games and try to keep everything as authentic as possible I don't have an ez flash due to the price and I don't know how to deal with the whole ROM thing I did buy that new game boy advance SP clone that has a whole bunch of rom's already on there just because the price was so cheap but I have not gotten out of the mail yet
