The reason the battery has to be charged when the device is off is because the GBC lacks the circuitry required to cut off the battery while charging, it would discharge the battery while it's being charged and the effects could range from ruining the motherboard to the battery exploding.

If the right mods exist, a USB-C mois could also take the place if the headphone jack and the HDMI output. If the mod was _really_ insane, then it could theoretically provide other uses, like emulating the GameBoy Camera, GameBoy Printer, or letting you hook up external controllers or maybe even storage devices to run games off of. (Or provide an internal SD card that could be mounted through a USB port. The possibilities are endless!) It occurs to me that the Nintendo Switch can do every single thing I just mentioned.

I was looking at the battery indicator for a while before you mentioned it thinking it was a dead spot in the screen. Could be done better by implementing it into the color pass through for the logo. My issue with these modern enhancements is that I'm one of those sticklers who prefers the way in which a CRT or LCD screen would blur the pixels creating a softer image. I know a lot of people really want crisp pixels, but it just feels wrong to me. I recently modded my GBA SP with an IPS screen, and that was the first thing I noticed. I wish there were some way to enable a filter to slightly soften the image. Still, that's a slick-looking Gameboy Color! Nicely done and hats off to you for putting in all that work to trim and solder everything.
@LRM12o811 ай бұрын
That's why I prefer connecting my NES and SNES via RF over Component out and part of why I prefer a backlight mod over a sharp screen on my GameBoy pocket. NES graphics just look lifeless and bland without the RF noise. I feel like many games (most notably SMB) relied on noise to give texture to the backgrounds or they were simply not able to fill the screen with textures. The SNES has more textures, but it still looks fine through the RF, definitely better than a cheap converter. GameBoy graphics also look quite untextured in a perfectly crisp, high-res image, and I feel like the pixel grid makes the image look more defined on that console. For all other consoles that werw released later, I prefer a sharp, flawless and noise free image though. I've never been a fan of CRTs, I can't stand CRT whine and it's a mistery to me how it didn't make my ears bleed as a child, but it did make me very uncomfortable nowadays.

One thing I don't really care much on GBC mods is the battery one. The energy density to good Ni-MH cells is about the same, and with those you get to have as many batteries as you want fully charged ready to go, and specially, with zero modding needed. Also nothing impedes you from adding the internal Ni-MH charger as well like with the Li-Ion. The one thing Li-Ion mods got tho is weight.

You should try using a cnc for cutting jobs like enlarging the screen hole. It might be difficult at first to get access, and it's not something people can normally repeat at home, but: 1. You can show how much better the result can be this way; and 2. People will see it's easy and will start looking around for access to cnc themselves at hacker spaces etc. And this way the skillset will become more and more popular and more people will find themselves able to do even more amazing looking mods that look factory made.

Also does the RGB LED kit show the low battery warning regardless of power source? I’m thinking of installing the USBC battery kit from Retro Game Repair Shop.
@Dallen92 жыл бұрын
the battery mod not being able to charge when in use is a major set back, I'd like the battery indicator on the screen not look like the pixels are just not turned on(and if that could be turned off), and I'd wonder if a stock/Nintendo branded GBC wall power supply even work with this battery mod. I like a lot of things about this GBC mod setup but those little nit picks would make it pointless. I love the ideas these mods propose but damn Funny play did you have to just goof up the execution. I hope they iron out these inconveniences so this is just a kit cause this mod setup looks sick. And the white leds not showing white would probably be due to the pealessent coating on the shell distorting the color cause in the video it looked like a green dot with a blueish halo.

I replicated this more or less. But I must say I am missing something on the Funnyplaying LED Button Board. See, when I play Super Mario land 2 for example, I have to hold B to run and then holding B, jumping with A. Means, that every time I do this, the LED board changes its mode from off, to breathing light, to RGB mode, to white etc.. because you need to press B+A to switch mode. I wish they had implemented a kind of lock, so you can protect the settings until you decide to hold some kind of combination to unlock

Regarding the charging cable. Pretty sure thats a fairly standard 5v barrel plug to usb adapter. There are a handful of sizes of barrel plug available but this is fairly common for weirder stuff (ie I have a shipping scale, external hard drive and a label maker that use the exact same style power cord, might be a different size barrel but yah)

I find it funny that the TV output was nicer than the consolizer despite costing far less and being a more useful kit as it can be portable too.

I definitely think they are comparable for sure, but the consolizer does have more video options and other amenities that make it a great home console.

@@MachoNachoProductions It's an emulator thing but you should look into the CRT filters that emulators like RetroArch have. They actually curve the image a bit for some of them, like crt-mattias. It's really beautiful. It takes some processing power for sure, so unfortunately I don't think the consolizers could use stuff like that, but I could be wrong as I don't know how strong FPGAs actually are.

The case from funnyplaying is much better because the Q5 ips display already sticks to the glass there and thus the gap between the screen and the glass is left out.

Could it have been done with version 2 of the IPS? cause them screens man. You do awesome work!!!!

Thank you EJ!! I believe it is only compatible with Q5 panels

Game boy is easy to mod for beginners. I got a case that was already sized for the screen. I highly recommend doing the battery mod if you replace your screen because AA die faster. Also COVER THE SCREEN when replacing because if you get dust between the lens you will go insane. Trust me lol.

Dust between the screen and lens drives me bananas 😅

So it needs Bluetooth out for audio. And then a different power mod so you can charge the battery and play it at the same time... And it should plug in via USB-C. Also that LED board that is laying over the top of the Nintendo board, should be redone in white...

Petty cool looking. Would be a nice touch if the faceplate and rear sticker said “Gameboy Clear” 😆

IDK if they make them anymore, but there used to be really cool chiptune mods for the gbc. I had a gbc with a bunch of mods for that and was the coolest thing. Althought a little bit cumbersome sometimes for gaming but chiptune music is awesome.
