Matt, this will not be the last time you do heavy lifting on your property. At the very least, please get yourself some proper PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). Behold the list of must haves; 1. Hardhat - above all (no pun intended), protect your head and face. You should see mine! 2. Safety glasses 3. Steel toe boots (Saved my toes a couple of times) 4. Gloves 5. Hearing protection (Often overlooked and kind of a pain) Especially, if you're a shooter. I lost partial hearing in my right ear thanks to a Colt Python. I had shot that revolver many times without any problems. One day I fired it while standing to close to a vertical embankment. The shockwave bounced off the cliffside and ear boxed me. For 2 weeks I couldn't hear out of that ear. About 10 years ago, I started having tenitis troubles from that ear only. Left is perfect. I'm an apprentice millwright. Ironically, my next class at the union training center in Portland is going to be on hoisting, rigging, etc. In closing, when building anything, etch this into your brain and start here. PLS (In that order) P = Plumb L = Level S = Square (This was partially the reason for the collapse) I've been a fan of your videos for years. The first one I watched was the abalone one where you found huge abalone in ankle deep water. Congratulations on your tremendous success my friend!

i second this, the safety boots saved me many times of losing/crushing my toes as well (I worked as a scaffolder). never underestimate protection equipments

Be careful Matt, I’m a guy with a severely bad back so take it from me, take a little extra time, spend a couple more bucks and the most important thing, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Keep up the amazing work sir, nothing but respect and admiration for what you’ve done. ✌️

I would like to bring up the three-fingered farmer. He is that way because he had to figure out how to make the difficult, work, because he thought he could not afford to get the correct equipment to do the job. with just a little bit of calling around and planning you could have paid someone to deliver this to your house and set it down where you wanted it. yes it costs money but money is easier to come by than seven fingers. I love you and have been watching you from the very beginning. never put money before safety. You are worth to much. even to an old man like me. keep up the great work you are doing. I just don't want you to go threw any more surgeries or injuries. You could have just disconnected the trailer until you got the proper equipment to off load the trailer.

Seeing you wrap that chain around your hand, I wanted to cite you for a safety violation. I don't wish you ill, but was certainly happy to see this fail. All that was missing was a drawl and a "hold my beer" comment.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your ingenuity at work. Even though it was dangerous, you learned a lot not just about building a hoist but also about physics, and the way things work. Yes someone would say you got lucky, but you also learned a lot. So I’ll be optimistic and say hey you gained a lot of wisdom and experience by doing this, good work. Even though it failed and it was extremely dangerous, you nailed it. It’s simple trial and error but just be careful… My heart stopped a few times watching this video lol but you live and learn

Matt, having worked in the building trades for almost ten years, one of the first things they taught us as an apprentice is to recognize and keep your body parts out of pinch points. I have a feeling you are going to be doing a lot more work on your property, so please slow down and take the time and watch some safety videos. It would be a good idea to start with pinch points. Your family is depending on you,so please don't put you success at risk.
