I am a retired heavy equipment mechanic, 49 years in the trade. The reason that Welker Farms is one of my favorite farming channels to watch is because of how you do things. Like this project. Instead of buying a brand new piece of equipment and having all the modern issues (and mortgage) you take an old abandoned piece of junk and will turn it into exactly what you want and need. Love it. Scott, One of my very best friends is dyslectic. He is one of the best mechanics I know. Manuals can give him a hard time but he really doesn't need them anyway, he can usually figure it out buy himself.

Scott, After half of a century of being dyslexic I have finally started to learn how to articulate what goes on in my head. My wife gave me a shirt it reads " if Scott can't fix it we're screwed!". Most people learn well in a classroom. Yours is that shop! Through trial and error you have learned the tools of the trade. My family is the same way as yours... We could buy new and be out a butt load of money or buy used and fix it to maybe not like new but definitely usable condition. For us it's easier to look at something and build it in our head. I even find myself building it in my dreams over and over again until I wake up with how I'm going to do it. Don't ask me to explain just be quiet and let me do it before I think of something else. Who needs college. You've already earned what my grandfather called a farm engineering degree!

Thank you LegArms. You remind me of a younger version of my neighbor Kenny. He didn’t go past 8 th grade in school but he can repair or make anything that needs done to farm machinery. I had a tractor fire and the wiring harness was gone and would have needed to be custom made and expensive. The insurance company totaled the tractor. He was smiling and said let’s get to hardware store and get supplies. 130 dollars in supplies and 8 hours of both of us working on it. He had it back running. Granted it’s not perfect but he saved it from going to the scrap yard and I got my tractor back. I’ve learned so much from him and his motto is you won’t know until you try. 😊. The other thing is when he gets stumped or frustrated. He takes 20 minutes to have a cup of coffee and clears his mind. Then comes back to it with a different perspective. It’s crazy how he always figures it out. One of most intelligent people I’ve ever met. I know you and him would be good friends 😊

What you said @11:52 resounded with me and that's the moment I subscribed. I have a hard time coming up with the right word a lot of times, but it doesn't mean I'm less of a person than someone who can. I dropped out of school in the 11th grade and went on to have a successful business. After 35 years I started another career and have been successful as a crop insurance adjuster for 15 years and counting. No one has ever asked me if I had a diploma but I made a promise to my son when he was in the 9th grade, if he graduated I'd get my GED. I'll never forget when he walked off the field getting his diploma he asked me "I have mine, when are you going to get yours"...and I did!

My best friend as a kid was dyslexic also. Many kids had called him dumb or stupid. He went to a trade school and is a fine machinist now, Scott, not unlike yourself. You said you weren’t smart, but I would say you may not have been book-smart, but the skills you show, and the fact that you taught yourself those skills, reveals that you are highly intelligent. Intelligence has nothing to do with a certain ability, in this case, reading. I’ve known lots of book-smart people that make you wonder how they ever got a drivers license. Well done, my friend. I’m excited to see how this project moves along. With Nick and Bob on the team, this thing is going to be amazing. Just hurry up! I wanna see this thing! 😊

I love watching you guys as it reminds me when I was on the farm. We fixed almost everything and it was exciting and nerve racking. I can remember one day in the evening we were milking. I think I was16 years old at the time and was a scrawny 125 lb of kid with one arm. Anway he told me to go put the cultivator on the tractor. We had an Oliver tractor with Oliver cultivator. The section under the tractor was one piece and weighted about 250+ plus pound and the side units were about 160+ lbs. I said, "who is going to help me". His reply was you go figure it out and just do it. It got done but good golly it was tough. I agree with Legarms about applying yourself 100%. I think you guys are crazy (in a good way) and wish more people were that crazy. Happy New Year and God Bless!

Just a small tip. Get the standard bolt torque for those Cat bolts from the dealer and tension the bolts to the correct torque. Bolts are rated by the tensile strength of the material but the axle to frame joint is in shear which for the bolt is approx half its tensile strength. To avoid shear failure you use the bolts strength (tension) to generate suffeciant clamp force (friction) so the joint can take shear force without putting the bolt in shear. Keep this in mind for all bolted joints you create and you will achieve fairly robust bolted joints. If the mount starts to yield or flex as the bolt is tensioned it is likely to thin for the joint.
@kw900lkevin

I was really happy to see a new big bud video, you guy's do great winter project's. I agree with Bob, the classic look of the cab is the look for this old work horse, and there aren't a lot of them being used now day's. As long as you are comfortable that's what matters, plus i think the camera makes it look smaller. I like how well you guy's work together, and how each person has their own thing. You didn't get everything in your shop over night, it was through a lot of work, plus each generation has contributed to what you have to run your farm, and to fix your own equipment. I'm nearly 54, and it took me many year's to have all the thing's i have in my little shop. I bought many thing's from estate sales, garage sales, pawn shop's, plus the internet makes even more thing's more attainable. You just have to start somewhere, and keep adding to it. I'm disabled, but i don't let that stop me from working on thing's, it helps to keep me out of a wheel chair. I will attempt to fix or build anything, because i don't have anyone to help me, and i can't afford to have thing's repaired, so i just figure stuff out. Leg Arm's was right about not being afraid to try doing thing's you've never done, and not letting a disability get in your way. G-d bless, and happy new year.

So I have been on a life long education program digging for answers and often learning the hard way and then discovering better ways. My thirst to learn has increased the older I get. As another guy said in the comments you could use an annular cutter to cut the cab mount holes. It would make the job a whole lot easier and faster. Through Amazon or eBay you can purchase Morse taper tool holders that accept Weldon type annular cutters. I’ve purchased this myself for my milling machine and it’s been amazing. I purchased a few of the common size drills (annular cutters) The beauty is they are much like a hole saw that only cuts the outside of the hole. Even if you couldn’t get the exact size that you needed you could still use the boring attachment to finish the hole to the correct diameter. Hope this helps Happy New Year from Australia 🦘

I have done lots of thing in my lifetime and I would take 10 Legarms asking for a whatchamacallit or thingofamajig versus 1 college boy brainiac. Common sense goes much farther and in my book gets more respect for REAL LIFE issue solving. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing more for the three of you. Legarms, there's only one place that success comes before work, and that's in the dictionary. Hoping you and all your families have a super great New Year.

Scott, I was well over 60 before the eye doctor and I figured out why I never could do a good job of welding or torch work; my vision "goes fuzzy" at the distance you do those jobs. Needed my computer glasses to see.

I like to watch you guys build equipment, especially the Buds more than farming. The farming is watching the equipment you build work in the fields.

Part of the reason you can afford a nice shop and tools is you make things like the frankenmower and the sprayer that looks a little like a big bud and you reuse an old GMC for a sead truck instead of buy new or newer equipment. Honestly, Robert has so many mad skills that it makes all this possible.

Leg arms from one dyslexic to another your way smarter than you give yourself credit. Smarter than me for sure and I hold two Masters degrees. I watch the videos to learn something about fabrication or fixing things. It has helped me when working on various snowmobiles, tractors, motorcycles and everything else. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and the fact you are dyslexic. I know I don't share that I am dyslexic much. I hid the fact I was for a long time at college and I only shared it with a few professors.

We have run Conklin lubricant in our machines for fifty years now and almost no noticeable wear to gears and engine parts. It isn't cheap, but it costs less than replacement parts and labor. I am always impressed by each and every one of y'all. Scott there will always be a thingamajig and dohicky...😅

A very Happy New Year to you all as well as your families. I hope the coming year brings you all your hopes, all your dreams and all your wishes. You all are gifted and skilled. If I could have a wish concerning you and your farmily it would be the following; - Scott needs to accept himself for himself and stops feeling like he has to keep apologizing for things because he does not know or use correct term etc. We see the part we can work it out ourselves.. - Scott believe in yourself, in your abilities. You are an amazing young man who has achieved so much, and has learnt so much. Accept that as a gift given to you and use it to the best of your ability - Scott Never ever say sorry for being yourself, never feel you are worth less because of your condition. Who cares we all know you have it but that does not define you, you do that yourself!!. What we all care about is you as a person. Over the years you as a family have been doing these videos, we have cried with you, we have laughed with you, we have danced with you. But, at no time have we ever considered leaving you!!!! You have a kind, very gifted, a caring heart and soul and it shows in everything you do. That is why your family loves you and that is why we all love you. Not for your condition, not for what you can do. But, simply by you being you. If you try all the above and although I have said it for Scott in particular (mainly because he kept putting himself down in the video and always apologizing about himself and it made me sad as not necessary or needed) it could easily apply to you all. Then. I will feel happy and contented.

For cutting out the holes you could use a hole saw on your mill and then use the boring head. It is allso advisable to put gussets under the engine and gearbox mounts to prevent them frol ripping of.
