@thepeacefulwoodworker9356 Жыл бұрын
The splines are positioned at a 90 degree angle to go against the wood grain. Otherwise the notch in the joint will break along the grain.

@Kaodusanya3 жыл бұрын
what happens if you dont have that spline in the castle joint. There seems to be more than enough distribution of stress in the joint. Also I bet its fine with a table, you don't usually have 300 pounds of weight plus and mattress on a bed all the time.
@joek5113 жыл бұрын
Ya that cross grain spline , excelent, no way it will ever snap off.
@joek5113 жыл бұрын
@@Kaodusanya Weight is not the issue. Just a little lateral movement can snap the tab at the end right off. So he added the cross grain going up and down. Then cut the notch. Like splitting wood. It splits easy with the grain but not against it.

Check your DeWalt Compund Miter saw, models DWS779, DWS780, & DWS790 saws were recently recalled for a safety issue. If it was manufactured between 2019-2022, it has a plastic rear guard assembly that can shatter or break exposing the saw blade creating a laceration risk. If it was made before that, it should have a metal piece not prone to the same failure.

Amazing! I want to make one myself and want to duplicate this design. For the wood, am I right in thinking that you had essentially 2 thicknesses that you worked with. 1 set was 1.5x4.5 for legs, and another set was .75x4 to construct the outside and center rails? Is that correct? How much did this lumber cost?

Yes, correct. About $300 for the lumber in Central Cali.

Very nice build, what kind of felt did you use? Also, Thuma has a screw at the top and bottom of the bed to hold/draw in the center support. Have you seen a reason for it?
@briankillebrew2 жыл бұрын
I believe it’s to make the whole thing easy to disassemble
@LouisNafziger2 жыл бұрын
@@briankillebrew Well, this one would be even easier to disassemble since it doesn't have that screw. Hence why I was asking.
@xenidus2 жыл бұрын
It's probably to help prevent the center leg from getting a lateral force and "twisting" the center support board. If it is just sitting in a slot there is a chance you can rotate it out with enough force
@exxekhan3 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how much this project cost you in material? With the surge in hardwood prices this year, I bet this cost almost as much as the original Thuma. Thank you. Great video. High quality work.
@thepeacefulwoodworker93563 жыл бұрын
I got about 55 board feet of cherry to start. I still have about 20 board feet left. I bought the wood in August 2020 when the the prices weren’t that bad. I probably spent $400 on the wood and felt. Cool thing about this bed was there was no hardware needed.
