I Built a Tiny Camper - Episode 1

Hey guys! The start of a new project here! I’ll be trying to keep the episodes short (10-15 mins) and will post them as the build goes on over the next several weeks! I will still be posting my regular type of outdoor videos during this build as well! Any suggestions, advice, comments are always welcomed! I built one in early 1990s. 4x8 with a height of 5 feet. Had two bunks and a small woodstove. We also had a roof vent. Best hunting camp ever! All the best and looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I built my camper as well. I wanted a big window in front, a galley in the back, and windows on each side. I was stunned at the cost of these tiny campers with the things that I had to have. My cost was under $4000 and that was during Covid when Wood was crazy expensive. it’s absolutely loaded with solar and batteries and pass-throughs. There’s nothing like sleeping and a camper you built.

Keen to see how the build goes, I'm one of those people with a trailer who thinks of converting it to a camper, I agree with sealing and waterproofing to the max. If you can afford the extra weight I'd do a metal brace of some sort around the outside of the camper about a foot up from the bottom for extra support and protection for the rougher parts of a journey.

This should be an interesting series. I enjoy watching small trailer builds. One thought. When you attached the floor to the trailer frame with the PL premium and screws, I was thinking maybe some bolts would be better than screws to ensure a more secure attachment. I may be over thinking this as I've never built one. Anyway, I look forward to the next one....Take care, Bluefin.

That’s a good suggestion! And I actually had planned to bolt it down through the metal frame with some long bolts. The issue I ran into was that the wiring for the trailer ran through the metal tubing of the frame so I couldn’t run a drill bit down through there without hitting the wires. I’ll be keeping a close eye on it and if anything seems to be moving I’ll have to find a way to bolt it down. Thanks for watching!

Good stuff Rob. I have not built one myself, be did convert an old pop up trailer to a quad hauler some yrs. ago. No strong advice on your build but I'd use stainless screws, and undercoat it to death! keep the dirt and salt from doing too much damage to the undercarriage. And to all the Dewalt haters....... Rob knows his gear! get it right people! ;) Safe adventures Rob.....

Very interesting to watch . Can you tell me more about your motivation to build one and for what use . Do you intend to put some kind of heat system inside ? Thanks for showing us your project. ( suggestion: maybe lower the sound of the music when you talk )

Thanks. I will try and adjust the volume of the music on the next one. I plan to use the camper to explore some logging roads in search of some new trout fishing ponds and also possibly for moose hunting this fall. No heat system planned as I will be running off a battery. Just a couple lights and a couple of plugs for charging electronics. I’m used to sleeping in a small backpacking tent, so as basic as this camper is, it will still be an upgrade from what I’m used to.

6:17 that plywood must of come from Kent building supplies… lol Good thing they straighten out when it’s screwed/bolted down. I used worse building material on my bear stand yesterday, haha

I have been thinking about building a camper for the back of my SxS, Well just a one person sleeper that I could use spring summer and fall for fishing, gathering and hunting. Would make for a tight sleeping quarters though with bent legs, but still wondering if it would be comfortable enough for good rest. Hate to infest in something that wouldn't get used if it wasn't comfortable enough. I would love to throw my gear abroad and get out to a river and just be able to fish, rest and relocate without a set-up required. I'll be following your progress and looking forward to hearing your reviews when you put it to use.

Thanks Charlie! This camper will be just big enough to crawl in for sleep. It’s pretty much the same size as my backpacking tent, but at least it will have a mattress for more comfort and I’ll be able to store my gear, etc. Thanks for following along! 👍

I can see lot of overnighted coming up in this thing Looking forward to this build Layer or two of fibreglass keep it nice an water tight I know your probably trying keep weight down The gel coat actual what keeps it water tight
