I have probably watched every wooden boat build there is, and I agree with other comments, this is way under viewed, I have seen about every technique and you showed some very simplified but high quality techniques I have never seen, your hull flipping is maybe the best I have seen hands down, geat video, you definitely have skills, love the length of video , but the quantity and quality of what you showed! A+

It's fascinating, just think about the things we can build and create,as like this amazing wood boat, you can go outside and look at a forest of trees and see normal plants and trees, but if you think openly, you can create anything in your mind and build it,as this is a boat now because of the creativity of the human mind and able turn things around us, into a tool to use or entertainment and enjoyment, Nice job, the boat looks great 👍🏼

I am 68+ and so far I renovated and/or saved many boats from 16' to 30+'....now I am working on two boats, 20' sailboat and 28' woodie motor boat....and I still hope to build at least one wooden boat before I go to "other side"....if you are mobile and have means & place to build, go for it....if nothing else a small punt or garvey can be put together fairly easy in old fashion way....no epoxy and no expensive fittings....wish you the best 🥂
@jonklestadt30612 ай бұрын
Maybe not an experienced boatbuilder but a very accomplished wood worker. Odd design to my eye but very well put together with very nice materials. The electric outboard was a vey nice touch, and something of a surprise. My only comment would be that IMO there were way too many mechanical fastenings (screws) where such a well known and regarded epoxy was used in the main structure; like by a factor of at least 10. There were probably twice as many as would be used for a traditional build without glue! I suppose it means that the joints are indestructible, but unnecessarily so, IMO.

Where the dovetails are, should be a wide board laid across them and bound tight. It ain’t too late! A 1x12 would fit well, 2x12 it’d surely hold better! If any place can break it’d seem to be that. But it’s yore business!

I wonder, before you installed the bottom plywood, did you use a string line from the bow to the center of the stern? That would confirm the symmetry of the sides. My dad was a self employed boat builder back in the 50’s and early sixties. In the early days he would have loved to have had total boat epoxy for splicing the plywood sides. Later on I remember he was very pleased when a local plywood mill let him order plywood sheets up to 24 ft long. That is a very stout boat you built!

I'd never seen dovetailed panel scarfs. How do they compare to beveled joints? They certainly seem easier than trying to get a smooth edge bevel on thin panels.
@hesswoodwork2 ай бұрын
I don't know. I was trying something new, and it worked good for me.
@UguysRnuts2 ай бұрын
This is not a "scarf" joint. Scarfing is when you bevel the edges down to a shallow angle to create more contact area for the glue instead of just a butt joint.

You built a boat. My dad built several, in the basement on a 1960s sears craftsmen bench top table saw, and very limited set of hand tools. His drill looked like an egg beater, He also had a brace and a few bits. Only the table saw as a power tool. His last boat was in 1969 he made a pontoon boat in the basement It was 11/2 the size of a 4x8 sheet of plywood. The pontoons were soaking in hot water in the bathtub for months to bend into the shape he needed. It took almost a year to make. The boat was pretty big. We went to move it out of the basement side door, it was only 1/2 A stair case up. But the boat was to large to turn. So my dad cut it into 2 parts then put it in the back yard to mend and finnish, it was a sail boat. He used the center pole from our 10 men tent as the mask. It was in the back yard for months. Then came the day he would take it on the ohio river from Dayton to Cincinnati with him went my older sister, a few day camping trip with his oldest daughter down the ohio River. The ohio river is smooth like glass no strong currents. It was smooth sailing no doubt. An easy trip. They launched with tents, food and other camping gear. An hour later we get a phone call to come pick them up > < here. We packed up the station wagon Got there and on the river bank was my sister dripping wet head to toe and all the gear. The boat sank. Now thinking back almost 60 years later it was very funny. My dad left the boat his buddies would recover the boat and all the plywood. My dad had made a lot of boats One came apart in 2 places each fitting into the other so you could put it in the trunk. Later a aluminum comercialy made boat was made like it. My dad always seemed to give them away. The pontoon was the last boat he ever made. Morel to the story if it don't float don't give up. And make sure you can get it out of The basement.
