There are some spaces in the "twilight zone" so to speak, meaning the border between the side facing the earth and the far side, that will sometimes be able to see the earth and sometimes not, as the earth moon orbit is kind of "wobbly". But outside these zones, you are correct.

Kerbin's atmosphere ends at 70Km up, you've been angling the rocket too soon and too steep. Your design also seems to have the worst aspects of both a rocket and a space plane, you should probably be using a more conventional rocket with 2 or 3 stages Also I'm pretty sure there's a button to change the orientation of the navball relative to the command chair

I would love to see you and kAN do challenges in this game and maybe with Scrapman too! Setting time limits or part number or type limits and having to complete a certain challenge like get to some planet and some place on it and do a certain task there like getting a boat to the oceans of Laythe. Edit: Maybe size or shape limits. Smallest craft or widest craft to reach a planet?

KSP protip: For maximum cheese on the rapier, add the shock cone intake backwards on the back of the rapier, rotate it 180 degrees so it's facing the normal way, then clip it forward out of the way of the exhaust. One of the things KSP calculates for drag is the number of unattached nodes, like the one on the back of the Rapier, and by hiding the intake in the engine, you're (somewhat) shielding it from drag calculations, but the intake air is entirely based upon altitude and speed. I've got plenty of KSP cheese on my channel, and I'm more than happy to share!

There is little boxes in the lower right in the VAB that give you info about your craft. The one with the delta V symbol you can change how it does the calculation of the the delta V from sea level, vacuum and even different bodies

Idea: Disable the fuel/oxidizer tanks until you are using the oxidizer so you can keep the ratios right when you run out of fuel from the fuel-only tanks.

the delta v goes up with the rapiers because as you go up in the atmosphere they get more efficient, and your not wasting fuel going hypersonic as thats the rapiers main purpose

how you use the rapier engine is to think of it with 3 modes, air(normal flight in air), air turbo(same as air except over 300m/s), space(i think i dont have to explain it), . you stay at sea level in air mode until you reach about 300m/s then it automaticaly activates air turbo mode wich can get you 3x faster than normal air mode. once you are at 1000m/s you start tilting up gently untill your engine cuts out/stops producing a lot of thrust at around 15-20 km and thats when you switch modes and get into orbit with a gravity turn (tilting to the side gently) and voila you are in orbit and having used less fuel than having gone straight up with the R.A.P.I.E.R. also use a fairing, just do it its so much easier getting to space especially with the seats Edit: sorry if my English is bad its a second language

Lands on back side of tidally locked Mun, wonders why he can't find Kerbin. Your next mission, make an ejection seat+ that let's you get to the mun, land, take off, survive reentry and land on kerbin. It has to be slightly taller than that one, but not much.

I love this game. Pro tip get an inital orbit of around 80,000 meters this close to kerbin will make it a lot more effecient. Same with the moon, but there bring the orbit down to like 5000 to skim just above the surface befire starting your slow down. It looks really cool too. Great footage for videos

Pro tip: SSTOs usally get into orbit by accumulating a lot of speed inside the atmosphere before raising above it. That way you maximise the efficient air breathing capability of the engine while minimising the innefficient oxidizer usage mode.

I recently exploded Jeb while launching him on top a regular rocket without a capsule. The second time, I was more careful passing through "Max Q" and Val managed to make orbit in a spacesuit. I think Sue Origins should try that. Their rich carnival ride buyers would like it.

your rocket has enough delta V to land on the mun and get back if you are more efficient with your assent profile RAPIER engine is best used in shallow ascent profiles and this is how they uasly go first you start and as soon as you get 800m above the ground you level out and just speed up to 410m/s while keeping the altitude of 800m as RAPIER engines get massive increase of thrust starting at about mach 1 and keep increasing the thrust to mach 3.3 but you can squeeze a bit more velocity at higher speed of course the thrust will drop after mach 3.3 but you still can achieve most of your assent with it in air breathing mode, so getting back to the assent after you achieve 410/s at 800m of altitude you need to pitch up a bit 10 degrees above the horizon is often optimal and just keep accelerating and slowly getting up and you can achieve 1200m/s in this method just on air breathing mode and then you finish your orbit and go on with the rest of the mission.

Pro tip: you can check the DV at different atmosphere densities and it does change depending on the engines used.

Hey KAN. When you're trying to land anything, click the little blue waves next to the altimeter. It will switch it from sea level reference to radar altimeter. And also, right click the lawn chair and somewhere in the menu there should be a "control point: forward" button. Click that until it says up. Although maybe for that you need to go into settings and look for something called "Advanced Tweakables" and click that until it glows green. Let's see... what else am I missing? There are other launch sites you can unlock by flying a very, very long range plane around the planet. The planet's name is Kerbin and its diameter is 1/10th that of the Earth's, but with the same surface gravity so its average density is about 30g/cm³ which is 6 denser than the densest element, Osmium at 24g/cm³ (but the density isn't nearly as important as the surface gravity).

5:03 - The increase in Δv during ascent is actually genuine; it's because the game calculates your Δv based on how efficient all your craft's engines are under the atmospheric conditions your craft is currently experiencing, and the upper stage's vacuum Isp is enough greater than its sea-level Isp that, for part of the ascent, even though your propellant reserves are continuously diminishing, the efficiency of the upper stage is rising so quickly in the increasingly-rarefied atmosphere that the resultant increase in the upper stage's Δv actually temporarily outpaces the lower stage's propellant-depletion-induced decrease in Δv. (This effect is especially spectacular if you have an upper stage using an engine with stellar vacuum Isp but crap sea-level Isp, like the nuclear and ion engines, or, to a lesser degree, vacuum-optimized rockets like the Terrier or Poodle or Ant.)

A fun tip for you: When you are controlling a craft, on the left where the little staging icons are, you can click on a staging tab to see specific stats on that stage. By far the most useful of this is the TWR or thrust to weight ratio. If this is over 1, your craft is going faster than gravity, if it is less, then gravity is going to pull you down faster than you can accelerate.

The delta v was going up because most engines are more efficient in a vacuum. So, you were burning fuel, but engine ISPs were going up as well, for a while. Also, the delta V calculation for air breathing assumes you'll use all the liquid fuel available to that engine for air-breathing flight, that is until you switch engine modes. Then it recalculates.

The seat controls now use electrical power, you could do the same system now, but you'd need solar panels to power the reaction wheels.

The thing with the ∆V is that, at sea level, engines have a lower specific impulse (isp, which is basically ∆v/kg of fuel) than at vacuum, where the engines are more efficient

the air intake only work between 0 and 20000 ish mts in the atmosphere.. also the rapier engine (in breathmode) perform better when you hit 440 mts/s also you should watch Matt Lowne or Scott Manley.. they have great tutorials for KSP ps: if you re on pc you should use a couple of mods.. like kerbal engineer redux .. it gives you a lot of usefull data of your flight.. and you can customize it for whatever data you need at the moment

Hey kan so some advice for you, take your gravity turn much much much later. You started it at about 4km alt and you should wait until about 10km alt. Then you want to stay at about a 45 until you're about to exit atmosphere at which point you should be around 2500m/s before ever switching to thrust/vac which should give you enough fuel to get into a full orbit, and from there it's a piece of c- eh screw cake it's a loaded baked potato!

So the delta V actually does account for atmosphere because as you go further into the atmosphere you can see your delta V rise on later stages, and thats why you total delta V is so weird in the atmosphere.
