I build 80s arcades from MDF and a great trick to harden the surfaces that have been cut is to mix 5 parts wood glue to 1 part water and, using a foam brush, "paint" all of the cut surfaces. Wait for it to dry then sand the pebbled finish with 200 grit sand paper and the MDF edges and cut sections will be much harder to dent and easier to paint.
