It's not that Rockville are stupid. They deliberately produce low quality products because there's a demand for them. The market has spoken - it wants massive, powerful *looking* speakers at low prices that reproduce audio in a way that fits the circumstances of the individuals most likely to purchase them. They know that most people who buy speakers have mediocre taste in music, and play low bitrate ripped MP3s at inappropriate volumes in inappropriate places. Something like Rockville is just the ticket for that sort of application. Any band or artist who takes themselves seriously would buy something better than the cheapest option available.

Since you build speakers it would seem to make sense to have some rings to put on the surrounds for glueing rather than having to use dozens of clamps. I'm not a speaker guy, just something that popped into my mind when I saw you putting all those clamps on. Very cool video, interesting to see how it all comes together.
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
That's something I'd considered making, but ideally they'd be made from aluminum and it wouldn't be a simple ring, there would be some additional work to make them fit how I'd want them to and that means cutting down a big piece of billet. They'd be quite expensive, with multiples of them, in 3 different varieties per size for each basket we use. So to have enough for 2 subs at a time it would be 18 of them.

You should make a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch mdf ring to sandwich the surround on, instead of all the clamps. Thats been my go to solution. Has been working well for me for a long time. I made a couple varying inner diameter sized mdf rings. And i use quick lock bolts, with the 8 mounting holes, i find the pressure is plenty and distributed equally. I find the clamps even though they have rubber sleeves over the tips, they tend to make indentations on the surround, especially the rubber foam surrounds. Just a tid bit info. And solid instructional video 👌

@LuxorVan5 жыл бұрын
You should cut out a ring of mdf with routed edges that fits in between the surround roll and frame in several sizes to use for securing the surround to the basket, that way you can use fewer clamps and get a more even pressure! If you want them to last longer you can use polyester resin on them and just pour it over the contact side and let it level itself, then when dried use a brush to apply some to the clamping side!
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
I thought about that, but we aren't building hundreds of subs a day so it's not that big of a deal. There would also be different rings for different baskets and surrounds even in the same size. Maybe one day when I have more time to make them and more desire to not use a bunch of clamps.

Hey Boss. You could have cut the tube with a plumbing inside cutter. Its just a circular blade that goes inside your drill. Just a tip I'd thought I could. Throw out there. Its really easy to get the hang of using a inside cutter you could also throw it up in a drill press and with that little turn table you got you could have made a perfect cut. Not sure if you have a drill press or not. But I find them all the time on facebook local markets. Or your local thrifty nickel. I recommend going with a good brand regardless of how ugly it looks. Over buying a brand new Harbor Freight one. Or a cheap one off brand from home depot or Lowe's

I very specifically showed measurements, and did math, watch it again. As far as the cone cut out goes, it's as precise as it needs to be. Realistically it could be 1/8" off and still be fine, I know it's within 1/16" "eyeballing it". If you're triggered by that, don't go measuring walls, floors, or ceilings in your house.

Cool build man! One little tip that might help you in the future, when it comes to gluing the surround, instead of using a bunch of clamps to hold it in place, make a ¾" ring out of MDF that is the right inside and outside diameter, so that you can put it on the top of the surround where you're gluing it, then just use like 4 clamps but it will spread out the clamping force and glue the surround with even pressure all the way around. Anyway, just a tip! Liked and subscribed!
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
I'd thought about doing that but because of all the different baskets and surrounds we use, we would have a bunch of different ones. In this case I'd have to make one just for this sub. Doing them with a CNC wouldn't be bad, but I don't have one.

Out of curiosity, why is it that you don't cut the former all the way down to where it joins the cone? Seems like it's be pretty easy to low-speed Dremel it, and I can't imagine a benefit to having more moving mass. Loving the videos, thanks!
@EMFAudio5 жыл бұрын
The amount of mass cut off the former is a few grams, it wouldn't change anything cutting off more. In this case it was done while the cone was on it and the method used couldn't get any lower. I don't like going down to the glue joint anyway, I usually cut it about 1/2" above the glue joint.
