I find it funny how some people complain about loud keyboards. I'm in my late 50s, but when I was a kid into my early twenties, the sounds from manual and electric typewriters were commonplace and they were far louder than the keyboard you featured, Scott. I learned to type on an old, wornout, second-hand manual typewriter that was brutal to use (occasionally fingers would go between the keys and scratch my cuticles). But my Sears electric typewriter, circa 1984, will wake up the dead! Love your awsome channel, Scott!

This kind of stuff is awesome. I believe solenoid keyboards are from manufacturers trying to make them sound more like typewriters and therefore feel and sound more premium. Anywhere you had a lot of typing back in the day, it was expected to be loud, that was the sound of productivity.

I love the solenoid idea. You didn't even need to pick clickies. A nice arduino project with double solenoid, a tactile that will shake the PCB and a clicky like this one. Someone could also choose how much tactile or clicky he wants the linear switches with software (even per key).

I don't get all the hype about dampened keyboards Typing on a typical modern clacky/thocky aluminium case keyboard sounds like drips of piss hitting a ceramic urinal (IMHO of course) For me the sound of all the components should be distinct and full-bodied until needed otherwise. Buzzer is annoying and always was, but the solenoid is amazing
@ToyKeeper2 жыл бұрын
Since you have the wired version, it should be running QMK... which has an option to randomize the pitch of each keystroke's sound, or even play totally different types of sounds. It might be worth a try.

The early IBM beam spring keyboards (and I mean really early, they were terminal display keyboards) like the IBM 5251 and 3278 had solenoids that would strike the case on every keystroke. I never read it but I assume it was to mimic the feedback of a typewriter since most people people didn't even know what a computer was back then.

Couple things I would change to make this one even louder is to use taller keycaps like MT3 or SA profile that's pretty thin because while thicker keycaps improves the sound, it also mutes it as well! As well as using BOX Midnight jades switches because between that and Regular box jades, they're much louder and and bit more tactile. I suspect that the louder sound profile comes from a PC bottom housing vs Nylon. Great video anyways fam, nice seeing you finally make a clicky keyboard build! I haven't watched the entire video just yet cuz am saving that opportunity for a reaction video ^^; -Much love from a fellow clicky gang! ^^
@chickenchuggets63952 жыл бұрын
I do agree with your idea of mt3 or Sa profile keycaps but the solenoid is so overpowering that it doesn’t really matter lol, that’s the beauty of a solenoid keyboard, it makes it so the switches and keycaps doesn’t matter 😂 click gang!

@ToyKeeper2 жыл бұрын
@@hansennoah1 Yeah, I'm not a fan of those either... or really, any linear switch. But at least they don't get stuck on the way up. Box Jade's force curve drops to literally zero on the return stroke, relying only on momentum to lift it past that point. Let go too slowly, or use caps which weigh slightly more, and it sticks. What I like though... is a Boba U4 or Durock T1 or TTC Silent Bluish White. They're all non-clicky tactile, with a response similar to a scissor switch.
