I worked at a used game store that did console repairs. One day corporate called and told me to throw away our parts system over stock. I called my mom and loaded up some 30 broken xboxes in her minivan. By the time I was off work she had already tought herself how to mod one. Tip: you can avoid scraping the heatsinks entirely by spraying Goo-Gone onto the black thermal compound and letting it sit for a few minutes, then a q-tip/cotton pad should get it right off! Also, a normal hair dryer can heat the GPU heatsink enough for it to come off.

You can easily soft-mod (permanently) an original Xbox with just a USB 2 Xbox USB cable. I don't accurately remember how I moded mine, as I had both several memory cards and also USB adapter cables, but it wasn't very hard. Not trivial, but easy enough and it also allowed me to change the HDD to a 750GB one. Doing so enabled me to dump my Xbox DVDs to the HDD and run them really fast and convenient. XBMC support and proper networking is also a nice feature. In my humble opinion that I greatly respect, you should give soft-modding a try following a reasonably recent tutorial.

I bought one of the HDMI kits for my 1.6 Xbox project, but Ive been putting it off for a while. I ended up getting some of the old copper VGA heatsinks from the early 2000's that were big for slim Xbox mods at the time and have those installed along with a 500gb SSD and the DvD drive delete PCB. I have an Xblast chip installed into the system, but just this last weekend I was given another 1.6 xbox that has a Xecuter 2.6 modchip installed in it already, so Im strongly concidering moving over to that one and ditching the Xblast chip. Do you know if the DvD delete bios patch and the HDMI bios patch will work together? If so, the only thing left on my list to figure out is slimming down the power supply. I know previous Xbox revisions, it was possible to use a Pico PSU with a little buit of work, but this 1.6 has been hard to find some kind of newer power supply for. I found some prototypes online some guy was working on, but ended up giving up on his project.

This is by far more than I will do to my systems. I did the softmod approach with a sata drive replacement years ago. Took it a step further and slimmed the casing down. Then went an additional route of removing the disc drive minus its motherboard. At the time SSD was impractical for the mod based on cost. And I feel the HDMI out would bring my system more play time (haven't used mine in 4 years). Excellent job as usual Tito.

I posted to the wrong thread where people were saying why they thought keeping the HDD was better. Your all forgetting that the data drive will use less power than any HDD, takes up less space (better airflow), and is also silent (going along with the fan) so an SSD sounds worth it to me. If you are woried then you can use a laptop HDD they are the same size as an SSD and use less power than a bigger HDD though they are still noisy.

If youre going to fan mod it you might want to consider going for a 80mm noctua instead, you dont actually need a adapter, but if you go with a 80mm fan you will have to cut some of the plastic on 2 of the corners, I have noctua nf-a8 fans in all 3 of my xboxes and they all fit better than the original did with no screws in the original mount.

There seems to be many potential points of failure in completing this project, and I wouldn't know what to do if something didn't work first try! Still, this is amazing and inspiring. Softmodding the Xbox is an option too and its quite simple to do so long as you have one of the exploitable games. I have a softmodded Xbox from like 2015, I used the Mechassault save exploit to do it (you get the same UnleashX dashboard). I use XBMC on it with a really nice HD GUI that makes it look like a Xbox One menu and runs really well.

Such an awesome innovation for the OG Xbox. I wanted to install the MakeMHz but after seeing you needed the modchip and had to install a custom bios, I just decided to go with component cables directly into the Tink5x. I did upgrade the fan as well as a Noctua fan for the GPU (I have a 1.1 revision) Was there any particular reason you went with the 1.6 revision, or was that just what you ended up with?

The Xbox HD+ mod is an expensive way of getting a HDMI cable to your Xbox, but it is a high end mod. On the low scale which does the same is the Wii to Xbox HDMI mod, which takes the Wii to HDMI adapter and converts it for the Xbox, which can be placed either inside or outside of the Xbox. This mod will only cost you around $10 for the adapter, this is a huge saving when compared to the $100 version.
@_MJ07_

Very true, but in reality it doesn’t really compare. The Wii adapter mod is component to hdmi, so an analog to digital conversion. The HD+ is Digital through and through. The quality is definitely superior with the HD+, but is that improvement in quality worthy of the extra cash? That is for the individual to decide I guess.

There is no speed boost when using a SSD over HDD under an IDE controller, even when using a SATA to IDE converter board since it communicates to the system solely as IDE. The max read/write speeds of the IDE controller matches that of a 7200RPM drive, which are easier to find more affordably in higher capacities than SSD (though really, 60GB should be more than plenty for this old beast). I would also like to make mention of the ability to upgrade the RAM storage to double from 64MB to the 128MB similarly to that of the Debug Kits, and the processor from a 733MHz Mobile Celeron to a 1.4GHz “Tualatin” Celeron

While you are absolutely right that there's no reason to boast over transfer speeds that are limited by the IDE bus, SSDs still have the benefit of having 0 seek times and that is noticeable in game. There is a video here on KZbin and an article that can be Googled exploring the differences.

the one big thing this needs really to be an ultimate thing is the cpu upgrade. i understand not doing the ram upgrade since it's a bit more in depth and not everyone can do it, but the cpu there is little reason to not upgrade provided you add a switch to change it between default and full speed.
@brandonkick

Where do you buy the parts to do the CPU upgrade? AFAIK, there were only like two people who knew how to do it and kept it to themselves. So it's not like there is a public method and parts to just go buy and do this? The soldering to do the RAM upgrade isn't actually all that bad in terms of skill level needed. Most people just don't have a soldering iron, let alone a hot air station, and experience using them. The biggest issue is the RAM chips can be easily damaged by over heating them. @@erik3371 Yes, it offers a 2TB capacity which is at the limit of MBR capabilities. We are talking about "ultimate", so we have to take it to the limit, right? I don't think that there is anyone on this channel who does not relate more capacity with being able to store more data (software, games, videos, music) locally and who does not find it convenient to access said data on the fly. I agree with you regarding the 128MB RAM upgrade and the need for a large hard drive, although a mechanical drive would suffice instead of SSD. As for the LCD screen, I installed one on my system, and to be honest it’s a gimmick. I wouldn’t do it again. @Colin_Ames
@Colin_Ames 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mephiles343 Yes, 8TB is way more than the majority of Xbox owners would ever use, 4TB would be much more reasonable. That would provide room for every Xbox game in XISO format plus every emulator that runs on the Xbox, with every game for those emulators. It’s like everything “ultimate”, you have it but you’ll probably never use all of it (the same as owning a 200 MPH vehicle). Having said this, I guarantee that there are some people who will find ways to fill 8TB drives, with movies and music in addition to all the games.

Cool mods. Another tip that I'd mention is that you should only install a hydro bearing fan for it as it basically makes the fan unhearable and functions at optimal performance. A company I recommend is GUID fans if they are still around. I have a few left which I bought years ago. Also SSD vs mechanic drive on a system like this is pointless. If you got a mechanical drive it's going to perform just as good. Lastly, you should also remove the time/clock capacitor on your Xbox depending on your model which has been known to explode and leak over all the components on the board causing corrosion. Keep that in mind.
