I take all of my food scraps even egg shells and grind them in a food chopper. It grinds everything really really good and into extremely small pieces, mix it in some gardening soil, each week do the same thing, this will compost the food scraps much faster, sometimes with in 2 to 3 weeks. Put the egg shells separate from the other compost scraps, blend them by their selfs to almost like a powder substance and save it for calcium for your tomatoes.

Ive been using kitchen scraps such as above for years. It breaks down (decomposes) and provide nutrients to the soil. I wouldn't advise meat or milk because it's processed with God only knows what. Unless you have farm raised animals. It's the best jump start for your seeds/seedlings. I wish you happy healthy gardening!

Very interesting comparison! As I am pushing 70, an active compost bin has become more and more difficult to manage -- so I've resorted to composting in place. This method has been SO much easier on my poor, arthritic body! I've been burying kitchen scraps for years and my soil has greatly improved. However, along with the scraps I include some shredded brown paper bags or paper from my shredder, and dried yard waste i.e. leaves, twigs, straw, plant clippings and weeds. I've also buried expired or stale food items from my pantry like bread, crackers, pasta, etc. But prior to burying anything, I deep water the hole I've dug then water well after to aid in the breakdown. Thank you, Jag.

When I use eggs in omelets or baking and I have the uncooked shell... I throw the ahells in a bowl and leave it until I need them, at that point I use a glass bowl ND metal spoon to crush the egg shell to a fine powder and I add a little to every bed at the beginning of spring and again in the fall before compost and then cover with black plastic tarps until spring.... in the NW so it rains A LOT in Washington state, so I cover my dirt to not wash away the nutrients it got, and it can decompose the plant that sat in the bed over the summer giving me fruit or vegetables. Thank for your videos!!!❤

For egg shells, baking is for killing bacteria, but I don't think it's needed since it's being buried. To make it plant available faster, you'll want to blend it with some vinegar. The blending makes it break down faster Chemical reaction with the vinegar brings the calcium to a more bio available form

As someone about 30 minutes south of you, here is what I do - Coffee grounds - dry them for about 24 hrs, then put them in a container. The filters I use are non-bleached, so when they are dry, I run them through my paper shredder Tea - I dry the bags for about 24 hrs, dump the grounds in with the coffee. Egg shells - I dry them out for 2 to 3 days. Crush them and then use mortar and pestle to grind them up. Then put them in with the coffee & tea grounds When the container is full, I sprinkle it into the raised beds, potted plants, and anywhere else I've got plants. All household food scraps go into a raised bed that sits next to my house. The 1st 2 years nothing produced well, except for a lot of worm compost. So, we removed all of the worm compost and soil and missed it into our 3 main raised beds. Now it is just for composting. About once ever 2 to 3 weeks I put clean shredded paper, and/or clean shredded cardboard to cover up the food scraps. As an e-commerce seller, I cut up a lot of cardboard to get the right sized box for large items, so I shredded the remnants rather than throwing them into my trash recycling bin. I could keep going, but I don't want to overdue it here.😬 I'll jump intot the comment for your raised beds.

I grind the egg shells in an old blender because they are very beneficial to plants, worms can consume it that way. "According to the American Egg Board, the shell of the egg is composed of calcium carbonate (about 94%) with small amounts of magnesium carbonate, calcium phosphate and other organic matter, including protein." By the way I grow worms indoors and they have no kind of bad smell. I do not use anything animal asides from the ground shells.

If you add bokashi to the scraps that you add to the garden that will help speed up decomposition of the organic matter. Also you could pour a little bit of natural yoghurt onto the scraps and the lactobascillius will help with decomposition and will help to mask the smell of decomposition making it less likely that rodents and other pests will attack your garden.

I found this video very useful. Will the bananas and leafy greens create an anaerobic situation around the plants if planted around them? I agree with the composting idea. My garden buddy and I blended our kitchen scrapes and planted it around some dwarf butterfly bushes, and they all died. I often wondered if that was due to an anaerobic situation, robbing the plants of oxygen. There was not any milk or meat products used. There may have been eggshells blended in. We also wondered if the dwarf butterfly bushes were not a good product. We do not see too many of them around anymore.
@DaisyCreekFarms

It depends on howe much you use, if you use a lot of kitchen scraps in a small area, even vegetable scraps can go anerobic. Use little around your plant and not directly under the root zone.

I cleaned and pulverized my eggshells to a powder to add calcium to my soil instead of buying something. Too frigid here to try yet.

Egg shells can take years to break down. Needs to be grounded into a powder . Plants can’t absorb it that way .
