Takes me back. Haven’t heard this since the 70’s. I listened to this 45 till the grooves were work out. Great memories.

Masterpiece. I'm dedicated to this song to my beloved uncle who passed away almost a month ago after long illness. He played the song on the radio during our road trips.

Such a PERFECT pop song. Bouncy, snappy, full of hooks. The poem is sweet but not sappy - and you’ve gotta love that not so subtle double entendre he slides in there. This song was on the radio constantly when I was a kid in the mid 70’s and it always takes me back. Due to the timing of its release, a lot of critics have stated that it helped heal the country after Watergate, Nixon’s resignation, and the resolution of the Viet Nam War. It was a little shot of positivity in the collective arm of America. My parents took me to a concert at Stanford where Billy opened for Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. The pot smoke was so thick, you could cut it with a knife. I caught my first contact high as a 9 year old!

I have so many memories with this song for my parents had a lounge (that's what you called them in the day) and they had a dance floor and a juke box with this song on it. Me and my cousins would dance and carry on all night to this song. It was also cool because I was only 14 years old and was allowed to party with all the other patrons minus the alcohol.

Wow, great live performance! This was a popular tune but you'll likely never hear it on an oldies station. This is one of many "crossover" songs that did well on both country and top-40 AM radio stations. A lot of people who "don't like country music" liked this one...and Dolly Parton, Kenny Rodgers and others who had big crossover hits in the '70s.

Thanks for posting this. My two notes regarding Billy are 1) I thought this was a Buck Owens tune when I heard it on the radio as a kid and 2) I thought his cover of Buddy Holly's "You're the One" was Jeff Lynne or ELO. I am glad I discovered Billy even if I had already incorrectly heard his music for a long time. I see the style as a great example of the style crossover that was happening in pop culture at the time between contemporary rock, southern rock, country western, and the 1950's revival stuff of the 70's like London Teddy Boys, Lords of Flatbush, American Graffiti, and Sha Na Na.

On this day in 1975 {March 15th} Billy Swan performed "I Can Help" on late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... Six months earlier on September 29th, 1974 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on November 23rd it peaked at #1 {for 2 weeks} and spent 18 weeks on the Top 100... And on December 14th, 1974 it also reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart... It also peaked at #1 in Germany, Australia, and the Canadian Country chart... R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}

I was living in Waterford Township, Oakland county, at the time. My Aunt had the 8-track. It was a sensational song and the rest of the album was also excellent! Was that DJ Deeno Day? WDEE? "The Big D?" The family had that station on all the time. One time we met Deeno and he gave us a signed photo, about a 5x7. Good times!!
