I finally got around to playing one of the worlds most hated video games to see how it actually is. It was a mistake, a HUGE mistake.

DNF is mid. It’s biggest downside is not living up to expectations. I’ve never understood the histrionics surrounding it. Worst game purchase of all time? Please.

I don't think DNF is one of the worst games ever. It's not a good game at all, definitely below average, but there are much worse games in all genres. I think DNF's infamy is mainly due to the fact that the expectations for it were so justifying high. I mean, Duke Nukem 3D was and still is a fantastic game, being innovative, inventive, at times humorous, offering great game-play, real (-ish...) and immersive locations, enjoyable and varied weapons, secrets, and so on. And DNF was being made by many of the same people who made DN3D, so expectations were extremely high for the new game. And indeed the late 1990s/early 2000s preview videos of the game looked amazing, and the developers, in interviews and press releases, really talked up the game, raising our expectations even further. And finally, finally, when the game came out, it was just a by the number, terminally unimaginative game, with nothing new or particularly good to reward you playing it. It was bland, tedious, and lacking in imagination (there weren't even any secrets to find), the shooting was boring, the driving sections were boring, the first person platform sections were boring, etc, etc. I could write much more, but basically, it's a below average game that's only noteworthy for being a sequel to one of the most popular games of all time, for promising us the moon and delivering almost nothing, and for taking so long to come out that it became a byword first for vapour-ware, then for really disappointing end products.

@ConkerTS this is a well written post. I definitely have played worst games, but this is one of those adventures that, like you said, has nothing to reward the player and the gameplay is embarrassing and in this industry that is an utter failure. Mechanically and performance wise, there are worse games, but when it comes to fun factors, it's up there with some of the worst, especially coming from a franchise that was worth something in the 90's

I've never been a fan of any of the Duke games (always have been a Caleb person), but i was curious to see, back then - if this one would actually break the trend of a self-endorsing clown with the lame weapons and even more lame enemies. And what came out was a chew-toy of the self-endorsing clown...albeit with better looking weapons, and better looking refurbished (but otherwise the same) enemies. As the dude himself said - "after 12 years, it better be!". The main problem of the game is that literally in its every section - the player has to go through a lot of totally irrelevant hurdles of every kind - just to get to the part where you finally get to pull the trigger. This was the game's death sentence. It should've been a straightforward and direct all-action from start to finish, with zero downtime. If the developers had eliminated every single section which does not deal with shooting enemies per se, - the game would automatically be rid of the lion's share of its handicaps and problems. Balance and stuff - could be later resolved by mods or patches. Even the notorious ID Software allowed itself to release underdeveloped and poorly tested games, so what would stop some no-name studio from under the rock to do the same. Not bringing anything new to the table, - is perfectly fine. Just like with the renown examples of cuisine, there are no esoteric changes like pickled herring inside a chocolate cake. Diluting the game, on the other hand, until it became a mix of assorted sewage - now that was a problem. And that, guaranteed mr. Duke a nice and comfy bed: forever and 6 feet under.

It’s amazing just how big of a dumpster fire this game turned out to be. It’s really a shame because based on the old trailers it looked amazing (more on that later). With this game I feel that Gearbox gets too much flak for it. Yes, they’ve definitely had their fair share of dumpster fires and should’ve never released the game in the state it was in. But, so many of the game’s problems can squarely be pinned on George Broussard. That man is the reason nothing got done for most of the game’s development. If you want a great Duke Nukem experience check out the Duke Nukem Forever Restoration Project. It uses the leaked 2001 build as a base to recreate the e3 trailer and give us what the devs originally had planned. I unfortunately haven’t played it yet, but I definitely will at some point. Definitely check it out. Apparently there’s a mod called Duke Nulem Forever Enhanced Edition that aims to fix various gameplay issues with the retail game, and the modder has somehow figured out how to edit the already existing levels and even add new ones. Hopefully that will be able to salvage this disaster and turn it into something good. Good video. I will check out your other stuff.

I did look into and watch some of the restoration footage, and it looked decent. As for Gearbox, even though they simply aquired it, they could have easily looked into the game and determined that it wasn't up to their standards. Integrity matters, and the way they handled it was sloppy. I'm sure there is a lot more that went on behind the scenes that we will never know about. That is true. They definitely could’ve done more. It’s such a shame this game turned out the way it did. It will be awesome to see that mod for the retail game be finished, and same goes for the restoration project. Let’s hope that more builds for other games leak. The one I want the most is Prey 2. It’s such a shame that game didn’t get finished. It would’ve been truly amazing! Upon rewatching this I can say the this game makes me laugh the same way the Halo show does by being so atrociously bad and having all kinds of truly baffling decisions. At this point I don’t even want them to fix the terrible show because it’s so far gone that it’s not really worth salvaging. Instead they should just embrace the fact that it’s a dumpster fire and make the thing as bad as humanly possible. Then it would so bad it’s good. I have a few AMAZING ideas to “improve” the show if you’d like to hear them😂. I also have a schitzo idea for what my ideal Halo show would be, and it would use the separate universe in a way that actually benefits the setting (season 2 electric boogaloo is where it goes crazy).

I'm glad someone said it. Duke would totally get canceled on Twitter today, but not every character needs to have a deep character arc that changes their original concept. I never played a Duke Nukem game, but if he came out today they'd probably make a joke like "I'm here to kill aliens and slap ass, and I'm all out of ass!"

Well, you see, DN3D was made on the Build Engine, and then DNF was switched from the Build Engine to Unreal Engine during development, making it new to the DN games. So maybe you should do your research lol.
