Hey Becky, just a tip on the dog food. You may want to keep it in the original bag and then place the bag in the container. From what I've found, the bag's inner lining is designed to keep the food from going rancid.

@imafan26 Жыл бұрын
I do keep pet food in the original bag in a bucket. I add bay leaves for bug control and dessicants to keep the pet food dry. The other thing people should do, but don't always do with bulk storage containers, is wash the containers. After each bag is used up, wash and dry the container before putting a new bag in. This is especially important for grains like rice. There could be eggs in the grain that will hatch out, if you keep it long enough.

Just some encouragement as you encourage me!

@joanharris8057 Жыл бұрын
It is so much easier doing a load of laundry every day than to let it pile up and do laundry for hours. When we were farming I washed barn clothes everyday because I did not want stinky clothes in the house. I presort my laundry by whites, colored clothes, and grubby clothes. When each basket is full, it goes in the wash machine, dryer, and then put away. Sheets are washed once a week and towels as needed. My husband has always had clean laundry in our 50 years of marriage. The secret of household chores is to do a little everyday instead of letting it pile up.

We caught it in time and only had a few things thaw. We had 20 chickens we had raised and processed and did not lose any of them😅 We bought a new freezer and moved the old and new to the basement and now they are both working! Not to self: old freezers cannot handle the Texas heat!

One thing that I’ve found that helps with laundry is wearing my clothes more than once before washing. I usually won’t wash our clothes unless they’re visibly dirty, we were very sweaty in them, they stink or we were doing yard work in them. Obviously, socks and underwear are the exception. I’ve found that by doing this it cuts down on the amount of laundry that needs to be done. It also saves on the wear and tear of the washer and dryer, saves on the water and electric bills and helps prevent the clothes from wearing out prematurely.

I accidentally tested it while cleaning the touch screen on my stove-it works! (Tho even I don't have a smart speaker in my garage yet.) I really appreciate the self-compassion and adaptability you model on your channel. I've come so very close to losing the contents of my upright freezer.a few times. Oh boy, do I feel your pain! About this same time last year, my husband did not make sure the freezer was closed and after a couple of days I went out to put a load of food in it. I was devastated. It was awful, our freezer is in an outdoor shed with no cooling system. I live in Florida and the heat in the summer is brutal. I did my very best not to make my husband worse than he already did, because I know it could have just as easily happened to me. I do not have chickens, so most of mine went to the compost. I had a whole years worth of vegetables in there that we had just harvested and processed. I will never forget to double check the freezer door.

Hi Becky, just a heads up in case you have a power failure or happen to leave the freezer door open in the future, if stuff defrost but is still fridge cold you can refreeze it. They changed the regulations on that quite some years ago. If it's room temp then yes a definite don't use but defrosted and still cold can refreeze safely. Commercial kitchens do it all the time. Someone may have gotten more of something out then needed it's been defrosted in the coolroom and then placed back in the freezer a day later. Hope that helps for any future mishaps because like you say life happens and as much as we try our best to make sure these things don't happen sometimes they still do 😊

Normally sold through mom and pop stores (no big box stores) and there’s no price difference in different retailers; if it retails for $1200 then it’s that price everywhere. Just choose which store to purchase it from. Wish I’d had this the first 40 years of my marriage. It’s SO fast, SO thorough, and nothing fancy. I’ve owned fancy machines but they were disappointing at best.

I really enjoy watching you and your videos. You are so very talented and full of information. I've always enjoyed cooking. I'm more of a southern cook. You make me feel happy just learning all about preparation. Along with great recipes. What I like most about you is how genuine you are. You show any mistakes made. We all have those moments. Watching you need to clean out your freezer and explain your feelings made me think of you as my best friend. It might be something that I could do too. I am so sorry that happened to you. You're a good role model for others. So happy to have found your shows!

Hi Becky Please be kind to yourself. Whatever your disaster is, all is fixable whilst we're alive. You do more in a day than most do in a week. Your primary focus is you - so that you may, in turn, serve the family you created. Chores are never-ending and will be done whilst we breathe. Don't stress over what hasn't been done. Be grateful for all that you do. Take care! PS. My least favourite chore is ironing, but as a sewer and quilter I'm unable to fully escape it.

We had a frig in our basement a few years ago. We noticed a bad odor and didn’t know where it was coming from. My husband went downstairs and realized that the frig had stopped working. I used lingered bags to put socks in for myself and my husband. I use these bags too for my under garmets. It makes a lot easier to put them away. I also wash a load at night and put it in dryer when I get up, no matter how large or small a load.

Be careful doing that. If you forget and leave the wet load in the washer, it can get stinky and moldy. Then, you'll have to clean the machine and rewash your clothes. Maybe tape a note to your bathroom mirror if you do decide to do this. Btdt

@@AcreHomestead I had a major stomach ache when you had to throw all that food out. We can all relate to what you were feeling. I'm just sick for you. There's another way to look at it. Maybe there was something in there that would have made you and your family very sick? Maybe God was protecting you from something that you don't know even existed? Maybe there was something wrong with the food you purchased and made baby food with it? I believe in things like that. Just like how many terrible things we've been protected from by running late or, being sick and not going somewhere. Look at the people who have been saved from fatal accidents like 911 or plane crashes by sleeping in, etc. Just something to think about. 💙🙏🙏💙

You need a latch lock for your freezer door. There are many on the market some are self adhesive and easy to install. 1 park goes on the door 1 goes on the side and then it just closes and latches. Some have a twist lock too. Then you know your door is shut because you latch it.

Girls do not feel bad at all to share this. This is so relatable. I’ve had at least six clean loads of laundry in my laundry room and we’ve been having to dig through it to find stuff and I’m sick of it. I’m so sorry if this sounds ignorant because that is not my intention!! But I can’t understand how couple’s laundry piles up like that? It’s understandable when you have lots of kids, but I do my husband and i’s laundry once a week in about 3 loads. Maybe because we don’t own many clothes and I tend to wear the same clothes every day 😂 But I want to know how this tends to happen so that I can have more understanding for people’s situations.

Greetings from NC! I feel for you, I truly do. I know exactly how you feel. I too lost EVERYTHING in my large stand up freezer. It was the most tragic thing. However , it not only happened once but twice. Each time they were completely full of strictly meats. Hams, turkeys, roasts, chicken (s) pork loins. Found out it was actually the outlet and not the freezer(s) themselves. Fixed the problem but I still got out into the garage and check at least every other day just to be on the safe side. Especially if family members have been in and out of the garage. Preventing a total lost the second freezer is in the house. Chickens I know enjoyed themselves. Can’t wait to see what you have planned for refilling the freezer.

Aw Becky, I'm so sorry for the loss of all that food. I had a huge 7 cu ft chest freezer just die on me recently and I didn't even realize it had happened until about 3 days later. All of my meat was stored in that freezer, including a 15 lb turkey from a local farmer (that turkey alone was an almost $100 purchase). So it was a devastating loss. I'm now in the process of replenishing a lot of that meat. It has really made me reconsider and reprioritize meat canning for shelf-stable protein. What's funny is I have a smaller chest freezer that is many years older than the big one was, and it's still chugging along just fine...lol

❤❤❤ my home canned meat. Chuck roast makes best pot roast. Also do pork roast, lamb roast. Trim, season, brown/caramelize [FOR FLAVOR!]; stuff, (we like 1-1/2" broth), process. And this great for portion control.

I try to can a fair amount meat, usually not too long after a bulk purchase. I can hamburger, chicken and pork cut into bite sized pieces. I love having precooked meat ready to go without having to remember to defrost meat hours before cooking.

I'm really curious about this. Wouldnt the meat still be somewhat frozen after a few days? If so I would think you could cook as much as possible?
@IrishQT07 Жыл бұрын
@@melindaonamission9511 I wish that was the case. But when I opened the freezer, all the meat in there was actually warm and was already stinky. So the freezer may have been dead longer than I realized. I was estimating the time based on how long it takes to thaw a 20 lb turkey - and even that was warm. Ugh!

I have been watching your channel for I think almost a year and half, I think the first video I watched you had your freeze dryer delivered. Its taken me that long to get my mom on board with buying a freezer to start making freezer meals and stock up on some meat. Seeing you go thru this food loss is so sad but if nothing else comes out of it you are bringing knowledge to us who are maybe just starting out freezing meals. I called my mom a few minutes ago and told her we are getting a alarm for the freezer that shows alerts on the phone. I know its a bummer and hurts your heart to lose the amount of food you did but its ok mistakes happen. Looking forward to many more meal prep and gardening videos from you. ❤❤

I'm so sorry, Becky.. I know it's devastating to lose all that. I was terrified by it when we got our stand-up freezer, so I bought a kid lock for mine to help because it forces us to make sure the door is closed. We also have an alarm on it that has a sensor on the inside, and then a base on the outside that is on our fridge and goes off if it happens (which does often if I have the door open too long putting things into it). But it happens...either we do it, or the power goes out, or something fails. It's life.

Also a sign like they have for dishwashers(clean/dirty), magnetic sign. Could be used for freezer, or even a magnet that holds a post it note that reminds to check that door is closed. Glad you are giving yourself grace. Life is so fast paced at times. So much going on, so much to remember, so much to overwhelm. But the thought about the flowers was grand to think about for sure. My plate has been overflowing lately and yesterday would have been my husband's 68th birthday and wanted to go to the cemetery, but cold, rainy, dreary and yucky. He loved purple and flowers that attract pollinators and hummingbirds like petunias. The day before a petunia in a random pot was blossoming and I thought of him and felt so good(I always say to myself, that's my Patrick sending that good vibe, beautiful moment). We have to find the silver lining sometimes. What you talked about feelings, even towards yourself was so relatable and vulnerable. Appreciate you sharing. Even as a woman of 63, I can relate to you and the blame game. Never forget the "Grace", because you deserve it, everyone deserves it. But on the daily, grace is there and is amazing. We see it in nature and the animals in nature and we are a part of the big wheel that moves in life and nature. Please know you are prayed for and good thoughts sent your way more than you may even realize or know. I am rooting for you Woman to Woman, Mother to Mother, Human Being to Human Being, what you put out into the world makes a difference! Blessings! 😊❤

My heart hurts for you Becky, I think I would still be crying over the loss of all that food. My mother lost all of her food from a hurricane a few years back. That started her on her canning and dehydrating journey. She gave me the food preservation bug which lead me to your channel. Before she passed away last month she gifted all of her equipment to me and my daughter. Every time I work on a project in the kitchen I know she's with me. I had a "Becky Win", as I like to call it, last night. Mandy in the Making made a sweet and sour kielbasa via crockpot in her last video. I tried it last night (if was so good) but I had all of this left over juice/sauce from the dish. Then I remembered I was thawing a pork roast. I put it in the crock pot with all juicy goodness from the first meal. I slow cooked it all night. I set aside some for dinner tonight and bagged up two more for the freezer. One dirty dish and 4 meals, Becky win. Thank you for all the inspiration you give us and for showing the good with the bad.
