The first time I played dishonored, i ran through the game mindlessly killing. It wasn't until my final boat ride with Samuel when he told me how vile I was that it began to sink in. I pushed through and finished the game only to be told that Emily basically didn't have kingdom to rule anymore because of me. That was the first time lil teenage me had a mental click of "even the actions I think little of have consequences and I will be held accountable " The pit in my stomach was immeasurable, considering I used games to escape reality, not to question my morals or actions, but the fiery love bubbled more vastly than I had ever felt before. Dishonored made me able to appreciate the depth and nuisances of games like undertale, fnv, etc Thank you so much for talking about such a wonderful game :))

How wonderful. To me that moment was in old game Enclave. Where i found out that the princess i've kidnapped playing evil campaign, was, well, used to summon the demon who then devoured her to remain in the realm. That was a bit too much for 12 y.o. me.

I know people gripe about the game giving you all these awesome methods of killing and then daring you not to use them, but for me, the stealthy approach is much more satisfying than the chaotic one. I feel a lot more accomplished when I successfully carry out a mission and leave guards none the wiser than I do when I leave a pile of corpses in my wake.
@ladypeahen88295 ай бұрын
If there was no temptation to use all tools and magic, it would be a very simplistic choice to play the "good guy". I love the urge to use all the magic options and choose not to do that. They made everything so much easier, but some were lethal, and the "just a human" playthrough was also satisfying. And also urges to not kill anyone and see most of them are horrible persons, or the non-lethal option is worse than death.
@Sivanot4 ай бұрын
I saw someone I'm another video describe Dishonored as an answer to the question of "Who are you when nobody can stop you?" While yes, Corvo can be killed by even a bunch of rats, I don't think anyone genuinely thinks Corvo would get taken down even if he casually sauntered through every area without a care as a power move. It makes the decision of choosing to not harm anybody, to not even disturb anyone until they wake up the next morning, so much more impactful in my eyes.

Honestly, because the game is meant to be played in a stealth genre, I decided to play it the way it was meant to be played. But we all know it's an immersive sim. Creavity and judgement on your next move, be it stealth or combat or perhaps both on one playthrough. And you can save as much as you want if you want to obtain a perfect rating with no detection, alarms or kills. Less killing means a good ending. Even in the case of your main targets in each mission, which can get you rewards should you bring your targets down non lethally, that's as if you complete the side quests/secondary objectives.

I recently played the entire series for the first time, and I loved it. Rich world building, a lovely art style, an intriguing plot, compelling characters, great gameplay that allows for a good amount of choice and freedom, all mixed with a steampunk fantasy setting. Really wish that Arkane continue it, even if the overarching arc started in the first game came to a decent conclusion in Death of the Outsider. Since the Void is still there, I think there's plenty of room for more compelling stories to tell.

I had picked this game up when it was released, but only got around to finishing it recently a few years back. I naturally lean towards true stealth in these kinds of game, and had made several attempts to finishing it (I really enjoyed the game, but sometimes I just drop a game which I can’t pick up without completely replaying it cause I’d just be lost). Each time I was playing roughly as a stealth assassin where I’d kill, but only my targets/when I needed to. For some reason my last play through I decided to do a ghost clean hands run which was one hell of a choice. Now I had gotten to the last 2 chapters every time I played so I knew the game enough to actually do this without much resetting, but the game was just so vastly different, and especially that later half. I had always had medium (or even high earlier on) chaos so going through those levels with low chaos was completely different. Legitimately loved the idea of showing off to Dag by stealing his coin purse instead of fighting him. Oh also here’s a little perspective on how big and eldritch this world is. So dunwall is a small city on a small island in a small country. Now I say this fully knowing that Dunwall is a massive city, but as it stands in the world it is a tiny speck comparatively. Think of it as England vs the rest of the word, and that’s just the civilized side of this planet. Basically there’s an entire landmass that dwarfs all countries in this world combined. Dunwall is just a tiny island in this civilization which just make you realize how utterly small you are to this land mass that is uncharted, and uninhabitable to humans. It’s even theorized that this place is the home of the magic this world has. From the stranger to granny, it all hypothetically stems from there.

Dang, man. I love this game and you've put your finger on the thing that's made me play it 5 times, plus all the DLCs, D2, and Death of the Outsider. It's rich and it changes with your decisions in ways that are compelling and thought-provoking. It's a game that tempts you to scour the every map and every situation for all the lore you can get and it's easy to see its relationship to Thief: The Dark Project in that. Thank you for reminding me of how deep this game is. The other games are also brilliant and I really regret that there won't be more from this particular crew. Though I admit, if I were the Queen of Games, I'd round up the Arkane crew to make the Deus Ex games we didn't get, as well as giving them back Dunwall. They deserved better.

I always thought it was neat to have a morality system (for lack of a better term) that's like a caroll diagram like Stealth Vs Non-Stealth and Lethal Vs Non-Lethal and then which combination of those you wanna go for it. Also great that they actually have meaningful consequences to both story and gameplay. Prey (2017) kinda has a similar thing with whether use only human, alien, both or neither abilities and also whether you kill humans in it but I think that only had narrative consequences iirc (other than the differences to your playstyle). That's a different sort of experience any way even if it's similarly an imsim from Arkane.

All these years later and I still haven't finished it, hell I'm still in the prison mission. 😂 I just can't decide what play style I want to go with. Normally my play style is to go full on sociopath chaotic mode and eliminate all the enemies in a level before exploring every nook and cranny but the game punishes you for that style of gameplay. Which is what frustrates me the most, you get all these unique and cool ways to kill enemies but if you use them it makes the game harder basically punishing you and that's extremely frustrating. Don't get me wrong the whole choice aspect truly affecting the game is definitely a super cool mechanic and the game is really original that's what drew me to it, but between my indecisiveness and being punished for playing the way I normally play I just stopped playing it, so it's just collecting dust along with a bunch of my other ps3 games until I decide to pick it back up.

When you play dishonored you're silently shaking hands with the game an agreement that the game will treat human life the same way you do if you avoid all the guards and only spare/kill the main targets then the game will value the lives you spared but if you don't sneak past the guards but instead cut them down mercilessly then it is truly reflected in the way the game treats life truly it is a masterpiece of story telling. Fuck Dishonored 2 just ruined all of this damnit well at least its an improvement over the gameplay of the last game if a bit janky with the detection yes I still call bullshit that a guard saw me through two walls and a missing throat. And then there is the death of the outsider for and continuation of this gaming world that game would have to be none cannon or the outsider is replaced by his killer or the assassin dude from the first game.
