I feel this. I’ve went all in several times over 16 years of amateur racing with a full time ton of hour job. I know I’m disappointed all the time. What I’ve learned no one cares or notices but ourselves. I hate just being a mid packer now days, but 50-60 hours work week, 2daughters, and a beautiful wife I’ll give up results to win in other ways. Wouldn’t mind adding a couple of friends in the mix and looks like yours are definitely supportive. Learn from sucky mental days and savor the days that just click.

Thanks for representing those of us who are not at the front, who want more (I guess everyone who races does). Thank you for showing up - not as a pro athlete, but as a person juggling a big job with training. You’re making space for all kinds of people to see someone they can relate to. I mean, I love Syd and Macky, but I can’t relate to them. Thanks for giving the gift of sharing your story. PS: I’m doing my first 24 hour race (with a team of awesome ladies) in July. You did great Lo! My first race was three years ago and I was 14th out of 14. Just remember that mountain biking is a process of marginal gains and sometimes marginal losses. This will be so fun! I love your comments in the moment in the trail. You know what’s better than racing (in my opinion)? Doing epic trips with friends. Long rides on new trails. Traveling to new places and exploring and learning. Even seeing how your local trails evolve over time or how your relationship to your favorite trail changes as you get faster. Also, the process of learning to be a faster, stronger cyclist. To me, all those things (and more) are better than racing and they make up the majority of your time, even if you like racing.
@EvanLownds7 ай бұрын
I think this calls for the quote of "comparison is the thief of joy." It is incredibly hard NOT to compare yourself to other racers, or Joe, Syd, Macky. But at the end of the day, the focus should be on how your hard work and training led to a better climb for you, maybe you felt better mid-race, got up a technical section that would have been too hard before, you recovered better, etc etc. In the next couple of years if you find yourself racing the same events annually, look at your times and performance versus last year, but try to not compare to others. (I say this knowing full well that I'm not good at it either, so helpful reminder to myself and anyone reading this comment.)

love having you to following along with as well as Syd/Macky. one the back of how much you were beating yourself up about this... you freaking killed it... I rocked up to BCBR 22 as pretty much my first stage race. I knew I was doing it, did 4500 miles in the year leading up to it, lost 2stone and came 276 out of 286 that finished and loved (almost) every moment riding and will 100% be back at it in '26. My takeaway from it though is that training on its own does not make you kick ass... its you that does that and from what I've seen you ride you do kick ass. keep on keeping on and don't sacrifice having fun with it for one higher place. id rather finish 10th than 8th if i come away with a smile rather than questioning my life choices.

Thank you for showing the sucky bits! Most people don't and the viewer gets a false sense of what really happened. It is easy to compare yourself to others and think that you are on a similar level as them, and then beat yourself up when you find out that is not the case. I try to remind myself of the famous quote "comparison is the thief of joy", and appreciate what I am capable of doing and where I started. I like that you are a regular person with a full time job and only have so many hours in a day to train. You are much more relatable to people like me!
