This week the brand new Pantheon: Rhulk Indomitable came out, and alongside it the Arc Surge modifier, which naturally for the Destiny 2 community has brough their attention to a very particular weapon of significant notoriety, THUNDERLORD.

After having heard rumors of it's potential to "comfortably 2 phase" the final boss Rhulk, I had to get my friends together and put this theory to the test. We only decided to use Thunderlord on a select few of the bosses because for ones like Caretaker, Atraks and maybe Oryx the gun is very much not the right weapon to use due to the nature of the encounters themselves, Caretaker is major burst at threshold, Atraks is major burst, and I guess it could work for Oryx but we already have Whisper of the Worm for that. To be fair, the gun did perform reasonably well in Golgoroth as we secured a 5 bubble kill and on Explicator it only took us a handful of tries to get the 2 phase, though do bear in mind that a large reason for that is also properly timing our burst supers on threshold. Rhulk was the final test and honestly the biggest thing stopping this thing from 2 Phasing consistently is just the clone copy. If it was just Rhulk on his own, Thunderlord would 2 phase every time without question, which caused us to take quite a few tries to get the 2 phase clip. I can confirm after my team wanted to run thunderlord that i was doing nearly three times their damage on a thundercrash titan with izanagi and a explosive light gl also i constantly fucked up my swap time/reload of izi and our div would constantly go down on the boss so i could have done even better dps

Im a optimiser so ef anyone uses rockets i use gallahorn or apex if someone else will but i hate explosive most of my deaths in exotic missions, dungeons and raids are becuase the second i shoot some object spontaneously enters the barrel of my rocket sometimes its even a orb i created (also the reason i stopped fully speedrunning seraph shield as every time ive done a brig mission with a rocket ive died twice to the face plate becoming a homing shield crossmapping me, also it took 3 tries to do the new outbreak because i kept dying the same way rocket meets brig plate.) So i always want to use something else and ive still never been able to convince someone to do a boss fight with no explosives (every ron run i try to get T-Lord as i keep shooting his weapon as he smacks me)

Tbf, bait and switch is kinda total ass. If you miss a single shot of kinetic or energy, you lost more damage than you would have gained over any other damage perk. Unless you are a high tier raider or have a crit spot the size of a planet, theres no real need to try and use it over explosive light or the like.

Dev Insight today mentioned that Machine Guns were getting a universal 7% damage buff next season, while legendary rockets were getting left behind with no real option for their mod slots (effectively a 7-8% damage nerf), making the disparity between the two about 15% compared to what they are now. Linears, Glaives, and Snipers were notable picks from the “increased base PvE damage vs. all combatants”, but Rockets and GL’s are not included. Further evidence to support this is the way Pulses are mentioned. The 1.2 and 1.15 modifiers mentioned in the base PvE damage increase list and red-bar list (38% increase total) does not include the damage that Spec mods previously added.

The thunderlord strat got my team #39 for rhulk this week. We only used it on the rhulk encounter but it is super viable and very free. If rhulk didn't glitch on our first run we probably wouldv'e got top 20!

With the surge Thunder Lord is very viable for Rhulk. There is no chance of accidentally killing yourself and the lack of easily obtainable high burst arc/stasis heavies make the consistent damage of Thunder Lord great. The LFG group I ran with were all damage supers and once people didn’t get kicked during damage we easily two phased the boss. It is usually a burger weapon but like with flawless runs Thunder Lord can be a good choice.

I spent 12 hours doing various lfg teams for rhulk encounter, all of which said to do thunderlord for dps, only 2 did we complete the enc, both of which was not platinum time. My first team to try legend of Acrius I did not have Arcius so I switched from titan to cenotaph warlock, then did div during dps while herding shadow rhulk. On our second attempt we got rhulk down to the C in disciple, then they did final stand without any div(I died from underestimating the distance from the shadow), we finished with 56 seconds left of platinum time. I call it a success. Legend of Acrius is definitely the way to go this week

My team 2 phased Rhulk with Thunderlord, the thing that makes it good is how quickly damaging with all those individual bullets/lightning strikes refills your super, you can get two damage supers off in a single phase which is really useful

Thunderlord is good if its arc surge and a pretty long dps phase. It isn't really good at dishing out alot of damage quickly (burst dps) like GLs but where it shines is total damage/sustained dps. It's also really safe and easy to use, no need to worry about swapping weapons, shooting a teammate in the back of the head or missing shots, just hold the trigger. About the nezarec thing tlord was bugged back then, it was doing double damage lightning strikes on div bubbles, that's been patched

The potential damage is there, but Rhulk's skinny ass will have you hitting about 50% of your built-up rockets unless you're right in his face (exactly where you DON'T want to be). Also can't build up stacks on the boss himself, since the shots just bounce away, unlike against caretaker.

Thunderlord is fine with the supers for Rhulk. Golgoroth also works out fine. I wouldn't use it on any other boss though. Whole team at least needs a brain cell and a half for this weeks Pantheon

I’m annoyed at the LFGs I have gotten into. They are all using Arc Heavy GLs or Arc Heavy Rockets, yet Wrathweaver is perfect for this week’s damage, as it gives you a 25 precent damage buff to all Stasis damage for the duration of Winters Wrath, and a bit after it. Furthermore, putting down a frostpulse rift will grant you a times two! Meaning you really only need one stasis surge, and your other surges can focus on your secondary or primary depending on which is going to be the main source of damage after the heavy.

What makes TLord good for Rhulk is being able to strafe around without ADS’ing and avoiding the rhulks. Also, if you pop super at beginning of damage phase, you can usually get a second celestial off before damage phase ends because of damage being tied to super now…

Can confirm thunderlord is very easy to kill Rhulk, you don't have to sweat about swapping every time, just maintain your fire button and you have free damage. I did more than half the HP of Rhulk with this machine gun. One advice after you've thundercrashed him swap to actium war rig for non stop firing.

Thunderlord Pros: Missed shots are less crippling to overall damage. High reserves. Super comes back quickly. Good for chaining thunder crashes Easily obtainable.... BUT.. Cons: Slow ass reload (Titans will be on Curiass for super damage). Poor burst DPS. Requires Arc Surge Requires Divinity since people who can't aim with rockets or GLs need a giant ball to target. BUT it requires the Catalyst to even do anything (good luck RNG) The many reason Thunderlord runs fail is because people underestimate how important the catalyst is. And it is completely RnG. So Thunderlord runs are actually not recommended. And if you already have the Tlord catalyst, chances are you already have other god roll stuff.

Thunderlord has to ramp up and also since it’s a constant stream of damage instead of a burst, counting down isn’t as necessary. Missing 5-10 MG shots isn’t the same as missing a whole rocket

fully convinced that nobody here has heard of grand overture. psa: it's arguably the highest burst damage you can do this week without cold comfort with ballidorse and gjally. please for the love of god if you've been playing the game for more than 5 days and you plan on joining an lfg run, do not use thunderlord. grand overture is perfectly fine. 3m+ on every boss except atraks, over 6m on caretaker in 2 floors, and absolutely no swaps or ammo generation required.

In all actuality, Thunderlord is the definition of a 6/10. Maybe a 7. Easy to use dps, does enough damage so that anyone using it is basically always contributing to damage (just not near the top), great ammo economy, and on top of that, it boasts great benefits outside dps for add-dense content, legend/master lost sectors and story missions, and a great source of Overload to fill out your Champion loadout. It's versatile, it's reliable, it's easy, it's fun, it just isn't meta. No need to truly argue. Just don't overhype it or overbash it, and you're good in my book.
