I learned this a couple of years ago...transfored my chipping,just by by using the bounce of the wedge. Now I actually enjoy practicing chipping for ages and relish having a chip to do on the course, one of my favorite parts of the game now

Thanks for another great video. I once asked a real good chipper his practice swing focus thought, and his reply: the sound of the club "brushing" the ground. That has since become my focus thought.

I knew to grip the club with an open CF on sand & chips shots, but my 1st break-thru this winter was to FEEL the CF staying open (facing the sky) all during the swing, the 2nd was to keep the RH feeling underneath the club all during the swing (my swing key to accomplish 1st break-thru), and last, to pull this open CF thru the ball & into the follow-thru with tummy/core rotation, NOT with the hands or arms. No face rotation, no rolling of the arms or hands. Only took me 35 years of golf to get to this point; needed your video before U were born! 😂😂😂

Don't wait for the rain to stop. Get out there when the conditions are terrible and you will gain a hyper competitive edge over all the competition. If you get wet, you get wet. Who cares. What matters is becoming a magician around the green. Thanks

Great tip especially as the faithful bump and run is much less effective in the wet with long grass on fairways

I've never been able to chip consistently with a 54 or 56 degree wedge. Lean the handle too far forward, the leading edge of the club digs in. Lean it too far back, the bounce hits the turf and the leading edge blades the ball. Whenever possible I chip with an 8-iron, or P-W if there's limited green to work with. A long green, maybe a 6-iron.

Hitting that far from the green are you hitting a chip or a pitch? I like the little open face idea but sure I. could use it while chipping. Just looking for a clearer understanding.

The drawback to Alex's advice here is that more perfection in swing is required, to avoid hitting the chip thin, which would make the ball run over the back edge of the green. Alex is talking about the "bounce" portion of the golf club. Letting the bounce brush the ground, instead of the blade edge, does reduce the risk of the blade digging into the ground and getting caught stuck. But using the bounce this way raises the height of the blade edge higher off the ground, thus risking a thin hit. For some players this is a worthwhile trade-off, but for others maybe an unwise trade-off. If you want to use the bounce, you can reduce the thin risk by using Callaway's 'MAX' golf balls. The MAX balls are slightly larger (though are same weight). The MAX's larger size raises the equator of the ball higher off the ground, which reduces the risk of hitting thin. MAX balls are entirely legal.

Yes, open the clubface just enough to create a small amount of bounce. Happy medium

Hi Alex, this looks like a great tip.. I have a question though.. I play 14deg of bounce on my 56 $ 60 deg wedges, am I going to introduce a much higher chance of blading these shots?
@nickslobo
@nickslobo Жыл бұрын
Possibly, higher bounce is meant for a steeper angle of attack but it can depend if conditions. Wet conditions with high bounce is better because the sole protects from digging. Low bounce is better sweepers and for drier conditions. High bounce is dry conditions is a recipe for blading. So depending on where you are from, what the conditions of the courses you play and your angle of attack get wedges that suit all of the above. Mid bounce is always a good place to be because you get the best of both worlds.
@timharmer3600
@timharmer3600 Жыл бұрын
@@nickslobo I was fitted for the 14deg bounce by the pro at the local golf club.. I rarely open the face, I carry 4 wedges.. if I want more loft I go higher loft.. opening the face just over complicates what your trying to do IMHO. Only very rarely do I really need to stop a ball that quick that I'd need to open the face..

When you glide the club face on a chip you increase the chances of a blade shot which is a disastrous result. I rather do the hinge and hold

Proceed with caution. You can see Alex's ball position is towards his right foot. If you try to loft up the club while the ball is to your right side, chances are your going get real flippy with it. Might work temporarily but not from a consistency standpoint. Every chipping coach will tell you to put your weight on the left, hands left of the club head, and ball positioned towards the left foot for a higher shot. This will give you more room for your hands to glide through the ball.

Well, first of all, the old way of chipping is terrible… your hands are too high on the club. Grip it lower, at the end of the grip, not the top of the grip… you ain’t Cam Smith

Wow... i guess don't chip, pitch every shot... You helped no one. Instead kids. If you fat your chips, move it to the front of your stance. Off front foot. Slide your balance forward and back over stationary feet. Get the feel of weight forward on your lead foot, but shoulders even. Use a mirror, it helps. Freeze your hips and rotate your shoulders back and through. Chip till it feels comfortable.
