I own a 2008 tC 2AZFE with almost 70,000 miles. The car averages less than 5000 miles per year. For this reason I've changed oil every 12 months instead of every 6 months. I started noticing slight consumption around 45,000 miles, so I switched from 5w20 blend to 0w20 full synthetic. Even with full synthetic, I'm still burning half a quart every ~4300 miles or 12 months. I'm only guessing but I probably don't have stuck oil rings and scored cylinder wall(s). So I started changing oil every 6 months which is less than 3000 miles per change. This might be overkill, considering fully assembled short blocks are $2000 or less. Only down side is my OEM short block was assembled in Japan. It's probably in better condition than a new replacement block assembled in the US. Never mind that $2000 will buy a lot of oil changes.

My 2008 Scion tC engine blew after a year and half of ownership. I bought it used in 2012 with about 78k miles and it had serious oil consumption problems. I kept up with it pretty well, but it blew at 103k miles and I had the engine replaced. Now I’ve got 200k miles on the body and 150k on the engine and it runs great. I had to get a junkyard motor from a 2009 Scion and it has a lot less oil consumption problems and is pretty reliable and holding up great. The only real complaint I have was Toyota’s response which was to charge me 10k for the new engine replacement which I denied and was able to find a mechanic who could do it for 4.5k. Overall I’d recommend almost any year outside of the 2007-2009 range for both Scion and Toyota that carried this engine.

Hey Nate, love all the effort you put into your channel! My wife has a 2007 RAV4, 140k miles with the 2AZ-FE. Right now it is burning around 1 quart every 600-800 miles so I top it off frequently, but other than that it has been a good and reliable engine (and easy to work on). My question is, have you ever thought about attempting the TSB to fix the rings? Watch Wes Work and The Care Care Nut have videos about this TSB. I’m considering performing it on the RAV4. Any advice? Thanks!

I have a 2008 scion TC and I love my car. I bought it in 2020 off a friend for $1400 and all it wants is oil changes and gas and it keeps going no problems. I did just change the alternator myself at 163k miles but that’s expected at that mileage.
@Rizer12319 ай бұрын
Same, I own a 2006 Tc. I also recently changed the Alternator, which was a pain because I also had to replace the tensioner, and also the battery, so like 3 things.
@Jasoncalvo79 ай бұрын
@@Rizer1231 that alternator change was a nightmare. Getting it out then replacing it was super annoying. And then the belt fell off and getting back in place was even worse. So yeah I feel you. But now I know how to do it lol
@Rizer12319 ай бұрын
@Jasoncalvo7 I think it's just the tensioner that goes bad and it's a pain to replace because the bolt that holds it hits the frame, so you need to take off the engine mount near it and jack it up, to barely give you enough space to remove the bolt and then take off the old tensioner and put in the new one, but replacing the belt after that was a breeze.

@Haywood-Jablomie2 жыл бұрын
@@NATESINTERACTIVEAUTO I've got 156000 miles so far. Only my Brake Master Cylinder has died so far. Everything else is still stock aside from regular maintenance stuff... I buy SuperTech Full Synthetic oil and basically top up twice a week. One 5 liter jug lasts about a month and half i think. I used to use wix platinum/Napa high end full synthetic filters, but I've recently found a 20 pack of Fram Ultra Synthetic filters with the Steel Mesh innards and I use those now. Honestly, I don't know how long it will last but I pretty much always have fresh oil because it burns like crazy. lol

Unfortunately his video was discredited even by Toyota themselves. It's going to happen pretty much no matter what you do. Most of his other videos are excellent though.

Toyotas messing up? Say it aint so. They stopped being good 20+ years ago. The bean counters took over and the first thing they got rid of was quality control. I guarantee that's not the original engine.
