I Can’t Catch This WILD Horse! | Taming a WILD Horse [EP1]

This is day 1 of a series of videos that follow the journey of one very Wild Horse! In this video I struggle to build trust with the young horse and am not able to catch him even after 1 hour of working with him. Little did I know that was just a sign of what was to come because this horse would turn out to be the hardest horse I’ve ever trained!

You seem to be even more cautious than normal with this one, and yet, he still frightens easily. I wonder if your extra slow motions reminds him of a prey animal when they're stalking. I have no idea, but in his case, maybe moving a little more directly, and slightly quicker, might help. (when reaching out to touch him) I can't wait to see the next episode on this one, and BTW, he's a beautiful horse.

Hey! Yeah good thinking! In his case moving faster caused an even worse reaction. He may have witnessed something in the wild like another horse fight a lion or something because he really was trying to outsmart me! I know you'll find the next episode interesting 😅! Usually it’s a cue to move forward

Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah that’s right! It’s a move forward or increase speed/energy cue. In the beginning I use it to get the horse’s attention too 😄

Great Video! I love your method, it works and builds trust/respect instead of fear. BTW my horse is scared of backing out of our horse trailer. Do you recommend getting a ramp for it? Any other tips? Thanks so much!😄

Thank you! I would build your horses confidence walking backwards down small steps first. Sidewalks etc then build up to a bigger step like the trailer. I Audibly say STEP as I back my horse out of the trailer to help the horse know to step. You could use that when you are practicing and the horse will associate that word with the stepping backwards. We used to pile up plywood and pallets to fill the gap between the trailer and the ground. Yes a ramp would be nice.

Hi. I am very much enjoying your means of training , I am a 68 year old man that is hoping not to get bucked off my eight year old paint mare.she has improved greatly in all aspects except trying to put weight with my foot in the stirrup. We have put sand bags to add weight. She is not bothered by it at all. Will walk with the weight on the saddle , where we meet a wall is when I try putting my foot in the stirrup and climb up on her side , she wants no part of it and runs off….. should I just repeat/repeat. Or is there something else I should be doing …….to move forward? Thanks. Lloyd from Canada

Hi Lyod! Thanks for your watching! Your horse being nervous about mounting is a very common thing. Things that help are practicing leaning over onto the horse from a fence and that way the horse sees you from an elevation. Repeating trying to mount can help but you may try backing her up every Time she doesn’t stand still when you try to get on. God bless 🇨🇦 ❤️

So does the ear pinning towards you, chewing, smaller circle and head lowered to the ground actually work for the initial join up??

I’ve had horses that do exactly those things and I’ve had horses refuse to join up. Especially traumatized horses. Some just won’t and don’t want to connect it’s really sad. Probably 30% of horses actually have the correct temperament to join up properly.

Hey I have a question for you, have you ever/can you successfully round pen two horses at once?

I ask because long story short I’m in a unique situation with two new fillies that are untouched and they’ve jumped my fences twice. The only pen I have high enough they can’t jump is my round pen and that’s where they need to stay until I can get them calmed down and establish some trust/leadership. So I don’t really have a safe way to separate them just yet without risk of them jumping my perimeter fence. So could I just pen the pair of them? *im not new to round penning but this situation is a new one for sure.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to round pen both of them because you run a high risk of them getting injured and it’s very hard for a horse to focus on the lesson when they are in a herd situation! I do often round pen trained horses together that already know what to do. It’s much safer to train them first separately and then do it together. Do whatever you can to separate them and start working with them individually to get the best chance of success 👍🏼😊

I got crafty and backed the horse trailer up to the gate and once they were comfortable going in and out of it for a few days I was able to use it to separate one off while I worked the other. Both have decided having their spring itches scratched is in fact not so bad haha.

So when mine is facing me standing still. I try to reach out and he will accept it and then try to dart past me and nails me with both back hooves. He could run in any direction but chooses to run right next to me and puts me in his kick zone. I lunge him after to make it a deterrent for him but he hasn't learned from that. Suggestions?

Sell him! lol just kidding. Sounds like he has 0 respect for you and is just doing his own thing. Really dangerous situation if he’s kicking at you. Without seeing it it’s hard to say. Can you halter him and lunge him or is he totally wild?

please help mee! I've just started riding and i;m facing this problem. when i am just walking its all good but as soon as i get my horse to walk faster or run i literally stop commanding him i mean i get so confused and fail to use my legs to order my horse around and even sometimes drop the reins and my feet slip out i just forget everything. also i have noticed that sometimes i get so confused and start giving my horse mixed signal for example i once was pulling the reins and at the same time asking the horse to move forward when i realized that i was unintentionally pulling on his reins which was stopping him from moving. what should i do?

Hey! Don’t get stressed. Just take it slow. Practice doing circles with your horse! Circles keep you in control and your horse can’t run so fast in a circle. Build your confidence by practicing stopping your horse at the walk trot and eventually canter. You will have much more confidence when you learn you can stop your horse and control his speed with circles. Relax be safe and have fun!
