Notice that Fern's bracelet the Lotus is in full bloom, showing that love has or will blossom fully into it's full form. Frieren's ring, however, is still a simple bud and hasn't bloomed yet, showing that Himmel's love will never fully come to fruition, even if it still exists and is still eternal.

The scene with the ring takes place when the Hero's party is most of the way back from killing the Demon King, so you have to figure that by that point he had definitely decided he would never tell her how he felt about her, and made peace with just carrying that unrequited love in his heart for the rest of his days. But I think when she carelessly picked out a ring that perfectly described his feelings for her, he probably thought to himself, "I swore I wouldn't do anything like this, but she won't know what it means anyway so I'm going to take this one moment and indulge my fantasy of a romance with this woman." So in a way, I think Himmel was being a little selfish in that moment, even though it was an incredibly sweet gesture. He did that for himself, not for her - but I don't think that makes it a bad thing, or tarnishes his legacy, or anything like that. And obviously remembering the moment made Frieren happy, so it's not like he did any harm. I think it's a perfect example of the depth and complexity of this story, honestly. No matter how many times I watch the series, I'm constantly impressed with how beautifully every detail is crafted and layered to create a compelling story in a believable fantasy world.

That's how I have perceived it too after the show as it made me think a lot and I couldn't agree more. It's a sweet unrequited love that Himmel allowed himself to have and yes, he knew she wouldn't understand and yet he thought she might after he is long gone and hence why he insisted upon having their statues built so she can reminiscence their adventures one day and perhaps learn and remember these 'little things' that had more meaning

It’s a real pleasure to watch. I wish I didn’t have to silence so much of the music. After I finish recording and reacting to the whole season - I will be rewatching the season again as I’m sure I’ve missed on a lot of details and I’d like to go on a journey with Frieren and her past and present companions - again 😊

One fun fact is that at the beginning of the "ring" part of episode 14, the merchant they are traveling with says he owns a accessory shop. So him having.a spell that locates lost accessories is actually not just convenient but expected as part of the "folk magic" Frieren likes to explore and learn. This show is great with little connections like that.

Himmel was the Hero of Heroes. He could have had any woman he wanted, but his heart belonged to Frieren. He spent his whole life alone, waiting for her to return. It's so tragic and beautiful, my heart feels like it could burst 😭😭😭

When I rewatched from the ep1, I couldn't help but think about Himmel's 50 years. I think as if Frieren was wondering what the meaning of this ring was with mixed feelings, when she looked at the ring again and again.

I have this terrible feeling that he felt longing for her and was yearning for her to come back from her journeys even if for a little bit. After all, he waited as long as his health allowed him to, for her. And then he passed away in peace 🥹 It makes me so sad though. She understood it way too late. I hope she’ll reach land of the dead soon and meet with Himmel again. Honestly my heart squeezes every time I think about it

Yes, I also agree with you! This seem to be the case. My first thought was that he was going to propose but no. He probably would have if the circumstance were different but Frieren wouldn’t understand as she had no romantic feelings for Himmel and he’d be rejected by her.

I can only record 4-5 eps in one go (one day) because the rubber ears are uncomfortable haha I'm lucky I've almost finished the series before the heatwaves start in UK otherwise it would be nearly impossible to keep my make up on without melting haha I've actually struggled with my Nezuko cosplay for EP 1 as I had 26 celsius in my room
