@@GG-ek8cw "when modded" yeah, any game is better with mods...... even still, SXL is cake mode. you can literally grind with your eyes closed... one could say, there isnt really even grinds in the game. just the ability to land and slide on certain objects. of course a game is fluid when you literally dont need to input, inputs for something to happen. but once you actually get good at session, you are rewarded with more fluid gameplay then even modded SXL could ever offer.

To be totally fair to LA Courthouse, that was the first ever available level. I think initially they were gonna do an open world that kind of collated a bunch of real world spots, but they couldn't do it, so they just kept the courthouse in as a separate level.

Hey Jak, I'm the dude that made the full body traditional tattoos skin that's been on the front page for god knows how long. I've been playing this game since it came out and unfortunately it's been pretty much abandoned at this point. It's sad to see because I feel like this game gets a bad rap when compared to session. The skating community really likes to shit on Skater XL because it's not as "realistic" as Session but as more of a casual gamer I much prefer this game. Just being able to cruise around and hit a couple of spots meshes much more with my playstyle as opposed to almost smashing my controller just trying to do simple shit in Session. I know it may not seem like much but it's cool seeing something I made pop up in your and other creators videos. Cheers for downloading my mod. Been a fan of yours since your first Hawktober. Having played almost 600 hours equally on Session and Skater XL i can say that i still prefer Session over the two. The emersion of Session is what does it for me. It also has a bit more to the trick system and control of said system. I have them on PC and would recommend playing it on those platforms Love the review man.

i have about a thousand hours in xl and kinda agree: i think session is the better game vanilla but modded (pc, with xxl mod and others) its better because of it's physics-based skating over animations. love both of them though

Skater XL was amazing when i first picked it up, i would play it for hours on end. But now that's what i do with Session Skate Sim and Skater XL hasnt been in the system in months. It has so much potential to be great but it seems like Easy Day Studios has little interest in bringing that potential to fruition. Main thing for me is just how floaty it is on console (its basically as if youre skating with moon gravity) and theres no way to adjust it youre just stuck with that.

Think his description of feeling like a tech demo is on point. Decent controlling skate game with some maps. That’s bout it. When I played it and revisited almost a year later was the same, but maybe a few extra maps that were already released on steam waaaaaaay prior. No fleshing out current maps, no extra challenges, side things to do. Felt abandoned except for the occasional update with a map that would suck round in a few hours and walk away again.

I was so curious how you'd find this game. Every bit of footage I see had me between impressed and underwhelmed. Tbh I actually enjoyed the no mission structure that was my biggest gripe with other skateboarding games that'd came out before this was that it was like some mad race to become the next big pro it grows tiresome very quickly although he does make somewhat of a valid point though lol I do reckon that Easy days studios could've actually added in something like a custom goal creator or a trick challenge creator but otherwise yea it's definitely a relaxing asf game lol I love to hop onto it every now and again if let's just say I'm waiting for someone to come pick me up it's a really good time passer

@@dbspaceoditty right I don’t get that mindset, feel like more options for players is better than barely any. Feel XL is like he said in this review. A tech demo. I go in and dick around a bit and eventually get bored…..session I did the story mode (not fantastic but serviceable.) and had fun. Whenever I log on my file I’ll dick around a bit, when get bored sometimes I’ll go and get new gear and build a new deck, sometimes I’ll stumble upon one the npc’s sprinkled around and do a side thing, or I’ll find a recognizable spot and try working at the historical challenges. And the options menu lets you tweak soooo many settings so can be accessible to lots different people too, diff skate controls, gravity, flip speeds to make easier or harder if need be for anyone. It just has more on offer than XL. Sure XL can feel good to control but if dropping money on a game you expect have like…more… idk felt like I wasted my money on XL myself just decent controlling skate game with some maps.

that was the first proper update they had made since february of 2022(which was a minor update to the last actual major update back in august of 2021). the update was in beta in march of 2023 and released in august. they promised a lot and didn't really delivered. they promised darkslides would be coming by the middle of 2023 and i'm still waiting on that, there are still only 5 maps by default, 3 of which are really small maps. ever since the game 'fully released' in 2020, despite being honestly pretty early access, it's only been given the scarce update here and there, and ultimately the playerbase has dwindled so much(down from 1000 concurrent most of the time to 250-300 and still dropping). idk at this point i've just lost all hope for the game coming back and making the splash it did for me back in early 2020 @@Brunoki22

Hope to see a Session review, it has a story mode and advanced 3 custom settings slots you change big drop, ollie height, flip/scoop feed, like 50 filters and the best replay editor yet, diy object droppers, walk off board, darkslides, pedestrians, etc. Its even better on pc because you can get most of the Skater XL maps and other custom maps and gear. Its the better option for console between it and XL way more content and advanced custom settings and better controls imo

Remember buying the game and playing so much in first 3 days or so... And then never returning to it again. Because as said in the video, it doesn't have much content, it doesn't feel like a finished product. No challenges, missions, story, nothing. Just a sandbox game where you can do the tricks. I've played both Session and Skater XL, in my opinion Session is far superior to Skater XL. Session still needs work too but it hasn't been abandoned like Skater XL, plus you can really change the settings around in Session to make it feel like how you want it too, including time of day. Sessions maps also kill Skater XL. Edited to mention that Session is a little harder to get used to at first, but feels very satisfying once you get the hang of it and figure out the settings that you like for yourself.

Just couldn’t get into XL. Was a amazing initially. But after the initial few hours getting the feel for it I was like uhhhh yea this feels like a tech demo, and I got the console copy when released and it easy day was just bad at communicating and would go months with anything and when something did come up it was just a map download spruced up that was already on steam so I just gave up on it very quickly. If got the creativity it’s fine solid fun game, but def does feel lacking. Session is my side the fence, they were generally communicating with fans on what they were doing, had goals were thriving for and while it has its own hiccups too, I just find it better. Love the various options and ways to play. Having some side stuf and npc’s sprinkled around to discover that help change things, being able to earn money and buy gear from a shop, on top having a decent playing sim to dick around in, I’ll boot it after a long double shift from work to skate around a few hours before bed, maybe build a skate deck, try some the historical challenges from real life in it. Still not a fantastic game, but I feel it just takes what XL was aiming for and ramps it up and gives players more controls too. But that’s my opinion, interested to see your take since have obviously played way more skate games than me haha.

My brother has been playing a game called "pipe" that is almost exactly like this game but for BMX, you might like it! I think I remember there being like absolutely no hope for the skating genre in modern day, then this game made a buzz, then Sessions was announced, then THPS 1+2 was announced, then Skate rose from the dead, it caused like a total chain reaction! which has since died again I guess....

Session definitely has way more content up-front than XL, but admittedly it still felt like an unfinished game even on release and to this day, especially for what concerns inexpressive rock-solid character models and blank stares, and most blatantly the lack of a transition animation from offboard to onboard (I get having no animator on the team, but having that immediate transition on a product for release is a total joke). At least it can be fine-tuned on any platform and not just PC.

I put in more than 120 hours into this during the pandemic. It was a great way to pass time. I've also skateboarded my whole life so its kind of a passion. Believe it or not what got me to get used to the trigger steering was playing Session for a few weeks. Once I went back to Skater xl, I didnt even try to steer using the left analog stick (which works on pc, not sure about ps)

the best mod for this game imo is the physics editor on pc, it can make the game way more realistic or arcadey. lately though i hardly touch the game and get bored super quickly when i do, i've put some good hours into it and it just feels like there's nothing to do.... no storymode plus the maps feeling so dead really kills the game for me nowadays. and don't even get me started on trying to play this game with the steam deck's absolutely rancid joysticks.

This game, although a nice aproach to a skate sim, just feels too bare bones to bother putting much time into it at the moment. It lacks a lot of awesome features, that were once in Skate, that made me keep playing Skate. Stuff like spots, races, competitions, etc, and after doing those, I'd get back to free skating the city. It was great! You can't do that here, which is to be expected, given this game is an indie title. Then again, maybe the developers are not putting their efforts on where its needed. Players used to complain about how 'floaty' the gameplay felt, even feeling the need to download a mod to fix the gravity for them, making playing on PC a necessity. The developers however thought different and delayed fixing that for the longest time, focusing on other stuff. I dunno if it's fixed though, but it goes to show a lack of direction during development.

As far as content skater xl on console has been abandoned the things u loved abput the game ie the mod browser was only added in like a year ago so we went a full year with nothing . On that note i cant wait for u to play session is as close as u can get to what your looking for with the realisam btw dont forget about the phone booths they provide missions at a select few

Jak you definitely need to play the PC version instead of the console version. Easy Day isn't the best with communicating or updating the game so it for the most part just gets abandoned where at least the community on the PC side tries it's best to continually bring new content. Also as of this video I can tell you haven't been playing with the new grab update, sure it doesn't really add a whole lot or even really change the rating, but does allow you to grab your board whenever even when not in the air at will, I believe the transition has been updated in the same update as well. The modio thing is definitely weird, but Easy Day will choose themselves what does or doesn't make it to the ingame mod browser, whether it be maps or gear, and even the simplest thing like copyright can keep stuff out, agreed that a lot of these maps should be playable, but at the end of the day it's ED's choice and they mostly just wanna bring gear over. I think you're gonna like Session much more when it comes to content out of the box, Session absolutely destroys XL...... well vanilla Session will destroy vanilla XL.

I played Session first and kinda liked it but I remember getting this the day it came out bang in the middle of the lockdowns and it felt far superior, less rigid and looked more realistic. The empty maps just kinda made me feel like i was skating in our current world. I put hours and hours into the game. Just doing tricks everywhere. Great times. I never considered how hard it would be for people who never skated. To me "flick left to flip" is just a natural thought.

I'm glad you managed to squeeze some enjoyment from XL. I personally despise the game. The gameplay has some good ideas, but everything surrounding it feels like the jankiest, most unpolished alpha product ever. I can't have fun with it AT ALL due to how lifeless and passionless it feels. Truth be told, the only reason this game isn't an outright failure is the community carrying it on its back. And Session isn't that much different...
