I Can't Get No (Job) Satisfaction: Stephen Kellogg at TEDxConcordiaUPortland

TEDx Talks

11 жыл бұрын

Stephen Kellogg claims that when he was growing up, his musical interests were divided between his father's record collection, devoted to '70s singer/songwriters like Jim Croce and Cat Stevens, and his sister's rock & roll discs, dominated by hair metal acts like Bon Jovi and Mötley Crüe. In a curious way, Kellogg's music represents a meeting point between these two styles, with songs that delve deep into the personal, but make room for a sense of fun, while the music, which is intelligent and intimate, is also full of passion and electricity. With his long-time band The Sixers on hiatus, Stephen is currently working on a solo album to be released in 2013.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I saw Stephen play for the first time at UMass probably 15 years ago. He was opening for Angie Aparo. There were only about 5 people in the room but he played with the grace and humor and enthusiasm as if he was headlining at the biggest venue. It made a big impression on me at the time and so listening to his talk at TEDx now Im glad to see that I was right that he the real thing.

Thank you for your inspiring, humble messages! ....what you are taking about is seeing your job as your calling, even if it is not. When we look for the positive impact of our work, we will find it. When we can experience our current job as our calling at this very moment and find some meaning in it, it actually makes it easier to shift into something we truly care about. Embracing were we are right here, right now, makes change so much easier!

If you've never heard Stephen play live, solo or with his band the Sixers, well, your life is truly incomplete. He is one of the most engaging, giving performers out there, and his shows are pure magic. Before he gets half-way through his first song, the satisfaction he talks about in his TEDx talk is palpably evident. In a world of plastic, glorified karaoke pop stars, Kellogg is the breath of fresh air every lover of rock & roll needs!

I love my job! It's moderately salaried, has interesting challenges, and good colleagues. I will never work a place where I'm not satisfied with two of those things, but it's arbitrary which, because work is 20% of ones life, and so I'm not wasting it

What annoys me when people talk about job satisfaction is that everybody focuses on the employees but not the employer. Many corporations have sucked the life out work experience.They have taken away 401ks, benefits, vacation, and add the stress of multiple roles and we the employees are the ones judged as not satisfied or lost when in fact its the corporation that are lost. When you remove all incentive to work you cant expect anyone to be satisfied.
@StephenKelloggMusic
@StephenKelloggMusic 10 жыл бұрын
Here is the thing. No one is "judging" the employees here. The talk is intended to offer ways to help find satisfaction with your work, controlling things that are within your control. If you'd prefer to focus on the benefits that you feel you're due from corporations, then you could always start your own company and see how that works for you. You could offer your employees the things you feel are missing in the work environment. If all incentive is removed then it's time to find work elsewhere, but I don't think that's in any way exclusive from attempting to get more out of the work that a person does.

I feel for you and believe we all deserve at least enough to be comfortable, and things can get very tough for sure. I know that it sounds like fluff to say keep trying to make the best of it...blah blah blah, but I will say this about life you need to die trying. It may not work and you may die doing it, but do it on your terms and follow your gut. If it feels completely wrong look for something that feels like a better fit - again follow your gut. One thing Kellogg said that resonants with me was climb ladders worth climbing and I believe that is very good advice. If you die broke, but you followed your dreams you can die penniless and proud. Money is only a part of it. If there is food on your plate and people that love you there is joy in that and it could be far worse. I am not rich or completely satisfied, but I am loved and I love. I am following some dreams and I am working towards something. I do feel you though, and I am not making light of your struggles because I struggle too. Just focus on what you have and what is good in you and your world. Sometimes focussing on the positive shows you answers, conversely focussing on negatives can bog you down and cloud the solutions. Most of all just keep fighting.

Also some employers do really suck and it is a shame what some corporations get away with. Just want you to know I agree with you and it's not as easy as positive thought! We do have free will and choice though - so we can change our actions as well as our thoughts. I guess that's why I like the climb ladders worth climbing bit.
