Hard to believe Jack had only 4 scenes in the whole movie, but he owned every single one of them.

I heard an interview with Kevin Bacon where he talked about what it was like to work with Jack Nicholson and how in awe the young actors were of him. His intense courtroom scene was filmed several times, often with him not even in frame so they could get reaction shots of other characters but Jack delivered his lines with the same intensity each time. Later, someone asked why he did that, instead of backing off when he wasn't even being filmed. Jack smiled and said, "I just love to act. "

I worked at a Sam Goody/Musicland store that showed this on video on a daily basis. Every time the "You Can't Handle The Truth" scene popped up, all the customers would stop shopping and watch this scene. You can hear Nicholson scream through the store, and everyone lost their shit! Glad you enjoyed it!

The reason Aaron Sorkin is mentioned in the credits is because he wrote the screenplay. You need to check out more of his movies. He's a genius.

Yeah, this is definitely the movie that made "You can't handle the truth!" a thing. Even if you weren't gonna see it, it was in practically all the marketing, and then just sorta ended up being referenced like crazy that you knew what it was even if you never saw it.

You want to see a young Tom Cruise? Try watching Taps, from 1981, when he and Sean Penn were both just starting their film careers (I'd never heard of either of them before), and the main star is an equally young Timothy Hutton, who had just recently won an Oscar for Ordinary People. The movie also features the great George C. Scott, as well as Ronny Cox, the villain of Robocop and Total Recall, playing a good guy this time. I really love this movie, but I haven't seen anyone else reacting to it.

A great movie...so many terrific performances. Having seen it many times, I think the actor playing the judge is so overlooked. When he says to Nicholson "I believe I'VE earned it", I punch the air.

This is the origin of the, "You can't handle the truth!" line. This was Aaron Sorkin's first screenplay, adapted from his own play script. You mispronounced Keifer Sutherland's name. He and his father, the great actor Donald Sutherland, are Canadian! I mean, his mother was also a Canadian actress, and they were working and living in London when he was born, and I think they moved around when he was growing up, and by now, he's probably lived the large majority of his life in California, but he is technically Canadian. His character is such an asshole in this one, but he is up there with Kevin Bacon as one of my favorite actors, from basically the same generation and similar careers! Lots of great stuff you can see of his! "Article 99" is one of my very favorites, that I've been pleading for anyone to react to, with a great ensemble cast! The "Young Guns" movies were a favorite as a kid, westerns that are loosely based on the legend/historical fact of Billy The Kid and The Lincoln County War, also with a great ensemble cast. The original "Flatliners", they did a remake not too long ago, which also has a good ensemble cast including Kevin Bacon. Another one of my very favorites is a comedy/action he did with Dennis Hopper, called "Flashback"! I think you've already seen him in "Stand By Me" and "The Lost Boys".

Jack Nicholson actually ad-libbed "You can't handle the truth". The title of the movie "A Few Good Men" is actually a recruiting slogan The Marine Corps adopted in a TV ad after the "Draft" was dissolved at the end of The Vietnam War by Congress.

Great movie. You should see other legal dramas like Rainmaker 1997 or Civil Action . Also a great lawyer movie with Tom Cruise is The Firm. and Murder At First 1995 a movie based on true movie about injustice. Also Erin Brucvich is a great movie. Fyi I recently learned the real story that this movie is based on is very strange and shocking for one thing the Santiago character did not die. The Dawson character dies in a real strange way. Also a great boxing movie with the Downey (James Marshell) character is Gladiator 1992.

I really like tom cruise.. and his history is really interesting.. cause from day one he was praised for being the most serious actor.. would show up on time.. know all his lines.. he would be studying his lines during breaks when everyone else is fooling around.. he was really committed.. and apparently he was the oldest son of like his famliy that had several siblings.. very very poor.. was told he could never act cause he has dxylezia, ugly, short.. etc.. and he never gave up.. hes very committed in all his roles.. and you can really see he gives his all It makes sense also why his passion for film making is still so strong.

The movie has such an interesting moral and ethical conundrum where it really is.. could we handle the truth? Or is it right to lie to protect the system so people still believe in it? Kinda like.. if there was a missle heading our way.. and we about to die.. is it better to lie and say nothing is happening and have people get caught off guard? But i like that tom cruises character did go from cocky just want to win.. to wanting to get to the real problem and truth of the matter.. and its one that hits him in the gut from the institution he believes in so much.

06:00 is in the morning. Anything after 12:00 (noon) is double figures. The easiest way to calculate what it is is take the figure and if its say 3pm, add 12 and you get the 24 hr clock of 15:00. You're welcome. You're not correct. They can refuse to follow an illegal order. Jessop gave an illegal order, having been advised by command that code reds were now illegal and needed to be wiped out. Kendrick ordered his men to carry out an illegal order, and the two soldiers carried out an illegal order. All of them are guilty, the two soldiers of conduct unbecoming.

Nicholson's character really pushes it. He's dissing Jo Galloway, who's a Lt. Commander (the Navy equivalent of a Major). And by stating that he'll never get the *mentioned benefit* from a superior officer until we elect a female President, he's in effect disregarding the reality that there are female Generals and Admirals. (Not that he would GET the benefit, but he simply doesn't acknowledge their existence or authority.) And of course, by noting off the record that he really doesn't respect the directive from Atlantic Command about Code Reds, he's disrespecting the entire Chain of Command. One rule for those underneath him, and a different rule for himself. He's like an Officer version of Sgt. Barnes in "Platoon."

I get so triggered by Kaffee's behaviour... especially his first scene with Demi in her office. You DON'T walk into a superior officer's office like that. NO salute, chomping on an apple, not paying attention, no respect, nothing. If a Lieutenant walked into MY office that way, he'd get whiplash from the butt-kicking he'd get.

This movie was nominated for Oscar's Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson but lost out to "Unforgiven" a western directed by Clint Eastwood and Gene Hackman also from "Unforgiven". And yeah, expect nothing less if the script was written by Aaron Sorkin. His dialogues are sharp-witted.

25:35 and this is actaully a problem in the justice system.. each side has their experts interpret what happened.. it is up to the lawyers to convince a judge or jury their side is more plausible. ( what sucks about this is.. no one is truely lying.. they’re bending the truth, and leaving other stuff out to build a narrative). The problem also with experts in a regular trial --> they’re paid. Many are court experts as well.. so they know how to talk to a jury, know how to emotionally ‘ manipulate’. This is why you have to hear all sides.. look at both sides arguements to come to the conclusion and rely on the evidence presented to come to the real conclusion.. and it’s hard.. when this one flaw in the system exist.. Tbh, if we wanted an almost fool proof system.. you need a 3rd party expert that represents both sides.. not one side.. but ya… it doesn’t work that way.. so saying court is like a ‘sale pitch’ is 1000% very accurate. The client is the car

This was not enforced until this time period though. In the 80s, you could not decide if they were illegal orders. My uncle served from Vietnam 1972 thru 1987. This type of "blanket party", as they were really called, not Code Reds, were normal and if you did not do it, you were reprimanded.

Anytime folks argue against DEI, this film come to mind. They wouldn't allow Demi Moore's character to defend the two soldiers in court, because they believe that she couldn't handle the case because she is a woman and they believe that the only reason why she got that position. So they get Tom Cruise's character to be the soldiers' lawyers. And he has never brought a case to trial.

The real villain in this story is the Navy Doctor who falsified reports to cover up not doing his job in the first place when a Marine was sent to him for unusual fatigue, and he dismissed it out of hand as malingering. I seriously hate how they go after the Colonel (who was an over the top horrible person to sell himself as the baddie) instead of the Doctor who was obviously legally responsible for malpractice. Otherwise good movie.
