The reason is Matt Berry (actor who plays Lazlo) is a fucking phenomenal actor and has a wicked god sense for comedy/comedic timing. So much so that I’d say he is the funniest person on this the show. And it’s a VERY talented cast all around.

The joke is that EVERY BARTENDER is basically a fucking vampire!!! Haha!!!! We hate the sun, we only come to life at night, we are successful by preying on the weaknesses of people that come out when the sun is down, etc. Bartenders are ALL ABOUT Jackie Daytona, because its both accurate and absurd at the same time!

We also tend to know a lot about what’s going on in the town/county due to the social nature of the job and after too long we do indeed get invested and involved in the local community. A lifetime ago when I was bartending I got really involved in the local art community and also helped with fundraising, recruiting artists for events, and other such. Was a really relatable character.

Part of it, I think, is Matt Berry's way of saying the name, especially the Daytona bit. I don't know what it is but that delivery alone kills it. Then there is the name itself. It instantly reminded me of the stupid names Archer gives himself when he is going under-cover.

I think the reason this episode works so well is the sincerity. They could have written Jackie as only pretending to care about the town, but the fact that he actually loves living there and participating in the volleyball team's success makes it all more engaging to watch. For an episode about a guy running away from a debt, there's a surprising lack of cynicism.

What I want to know is...did Lazlo take his homeland soil with him? A recent episode in the new season explained that vampires need to take a bit of their homeland soil if they are travelling or they won't be able to function properly (can't sleep, become weak and lose powers etc..) Yet I can't remember if that came up when Lazlo ran away to Pennsylvania. Unless it's dependant on other factors...

I haven't watched the show in a minute, but are we sure Nandor was a soldier FOR the Ottoman Empire? the character is supposed to be a take on Vlad the Impaler, being one of the earlier known inspirations for Dracula and vampires as a whole. I think the Ottoman Empire was the army that conquered Romania (modern day region Vlad ruled) and ultimately responsible for his death. or maybe im an over-analytical history nerd idk
@Dontpostdumbcomments3 жыл бұрын
Nadja refers to him in the one episode “Turkish Frank Zappa”. He also is from a country that no longer exists which is neither I forget the name of the country sadly. He is not supposed to represent Vlad tho, just a Conqueror or warrior vampire
@saml3023 жыл бұрын
@@Dontpostdumbcomments my man, look up vampire lore. the version of vampire we get on screen is absolutely a send up of a Vlad the impaler type vampire. the show is satirizing things from long long ago. like, ok. maybe the character nandor isn't himself Vlad the impaler himself, but the character is definitely modeled after the vampire lore that came with the Vlad the impaler image.

I'm gonna pull a Lazlo Cravensworth in a year, up root myself away from this tiny ass hole in the wall farming community that only cares about high school football, then move to another state. By the time I leave, I would've called this tiny ass farming community home for just over 20 years. I don't give a shit that I grew up here, I want a fresh start far away from my judgemental hometown. People are constantly telling me that I should wait until I'm 22, but I don't want to wait that long, I wanna get out while I still can. Worried that if I stick around for too long, I'll meet someone who won't want to move over 1,000 miles away. I've lived in the same place for too fucking long, and I want to live where nobody knows what I was like as a child, or even knows my name. I'll be happier some place else.

Honestly, this episode missed the mark for me. I get what you mean by being interested in what a vampire would do if they decided to be normal, that premise alone could be a darkly funny show. I loved matt Berry for years, same with Mark hamill. However, it kind of took me out of the shows rhythm. I'd easily skip this episode without thinking even tho I think both characters are good. Just think a different direction would have been better. Glad u like the show!
