No chance they are getting in 2024, there are numerous places around the world with extremely low (even 0) income tax and they manage that through various other taxes including sales tax. This country is literally tax after tax after tax after tax and then the government wonder why we have record mental health issues recorded which impacts the number of people off work (and hence the countries productivity and growth), we take practically nothing home from our wages as the tax system favours higher earners using schemes such as dividends which are taxed at a different rate and other loopholes where people can afford financial advisors (such as avoiding IR35 in contract work), and everyone bar from those on practically minimum wage or below receives no assistance while tax increases along with council tax (Which we also know is the governments fault as they raised the limit from 3-5% to effectively try throw the blame off themselves and onto the local council's). The cost of living effectively doubled from 1970 - 2020 where on an average wage In 1970 you could own the "average priced home) in around 4-5 years while in 2020 it was 8-9 years. I hate to think of how long it takes now for the average worker to own their own home if at all even possible on a sole wage anymore - their policies haven't worked financially over long periods of time for regular people and they won't ever be getting a vote from anyone I know again. Young people are better off working the minimum hours they can and claiming benefits than they are actually trying as there's no incentive for the people who don't have family and friends to financially support them in the early stages of work as the wages are just not enough Vs the cost of living.

Bear in mind this is before the 5% Council Tax rise (and every council *will* increase it by that much). Again how will people manage that with less, and how will they react to seeing our new Albanian overlords being fed and housed at their expense? This could turn very nasty.

What policies do you propose? And are they feasable? Reform UK has a policy of tax cuts, basically a Lizz Truss budget on steroids. That all sounds very nice, untill you take into account that govt then also can spend significantly less. And before you say refugees or asylumseekers... That will save only 3 billion. So less taxes will mean less for NHS, universal credit, social housing and such. So the message that Reform isn't saying (but is inevitable) that all those things will be privatised. So you pay less tax, but more for rent and private health insurance. And be aware that is a one way road. NHS and housing can't be bought back...

Some things I agree with, but we’re in a situation where pensioners and those on benefits have been pushed to the top of priorities by ALL parties. It’s no use blaming the Conservatives as Labour would have done something similar for those groups, we’ve become a population of ageing people who generally don’t contribute to the economy. As long as that isn’t appreciated and understood we’ll continue to look at the workers bearing the brunt of supporting the old and infirm. I detest the HSL and everything that has been spun by those supporting it, but we’ve now got ourselves into a point where it would be billions wasted if we didn’t continue. I agree that we should be looking at expenditure. There are two ways to become better off, earn more and spend less…have we appreciated this? Regarding the top rate of tax, do people really think that £125,000 is not a top rate of income? I’d love to have earnt that. The increase in tax is hardly even going to be felt by most who earn over that amount. We continue to accept illegal immigrants who get given ridiculous amounts of money and benefits, meanwhile our poor and less well off fund them and service veterans are treated poorly…ridiculous! Finally, and I know that this affects some businesses, but whilst I continue to see people buying sandwiches, crisps, coffee (need a mortgage for one!) etc for their breakfast and lunch I’ll never consider we are struggling. I was brought up, and always, had breakfast and took sandwiches in a lunch box. A few pounds a week rather than tens of pounds. Times are hard and will get harder but look at other countries and whoever one might consider to blame, they are in similar predicaments. As for blaming what was done in financial support during Covid, I remember people screaming that we must support individuals, businesses and communities so don’t start bleating now!

This pensioner has been in continual employment for 50yrs paying income tax, national insurance, VAT (previously purchase tax), fuel duty, council tax (previously general rates), etc., etc., through the ups/downs of the economy. I worked through furlough so didn't get a penny. Until retirement in June this year only benefit ever claimed was the old style child benefit for my two children. Apart from NI I'm still paying all those taxes due to combined income of private & reduced state pension, so the view ''the ageing population is not contributing'' is totally false. I may now in your eyes be a burden, but quite frankly I will accept totally guilt free what I'm entitled to given all the freeloaders this nation has supported over the decades.
