@NibblePop Madam I have query, the speaker ( we are assuming the speaker is Dickinson ) is saying that society will criticize us and various references ..And further we are kind of assuming that the loved one is a male .. But according to some sources Emily Dickinson was romantically involved with her sister - in -law Susan Gilbert.. Can we interpret that the person whom she addressed was not him but her .. And she is trying her best to convince her lover and most accurately herself that "life is over there behind the shelf '' but they did not have access to that joyful domestic life.. And there is also reference of Jesus so we can assume that as she was a very religious person herself she was very aware of the concept of hell and paradise, sin and death.. So, she keeps insisting to the very last of poem that they should meet apart and there should be a thin line between them.. I am very much confused about it .. and I am stucked with this poem .. can you please help me?

@@NibblePop Madam I have a query.. The speaker ( we are assuming that the speaker is Dickinson) is convincing a person that they are not meant to be together.. The society will not accept them and the line "the life is over there behind the shelf'' suggest that societal norms and restrictions wouldn't allow them to lead a joyful domestic life.. Further we can assume that the speaker is addressing a male .. But there are some sources which are saying that Dickinson was romantically involved with her sister -in-law Susan Gilbert.. It's more prominent that society will not accept this kind of relationship.. And even she was a very religious person herself and she was very aware of the concepts of sin and death, hell and paradise.. It seems like she is trying to convince her lover and most accurately herself that they couldn't be together And she is setting boundaries even after death they are not allowed to be together.. There will be always thin line between them.. I am very confused and I am stuck with this poem.. What interpretation will be suitable? The lover was him or her ( Susan Gilbert)

@@payeltapadar I have already discussed that she loved a woman. She deliverately does not mention the gender of the lover. In your answers you may write this possibility of dual interpretation.

I personally am a very huge admirer of Emily. I get my writing inspirations from her, so when we got this poem of her in this sem.. I was eagerly excited for our professor to read it to us. But what was disappointing to me most, that he kept on addressing the lover as A Man when throughout the poem the gender was never mentioned.. While talking about her love life, or even her life he never once mentioned Susan's name.. He completely ignored the existence of Her and all those letters. It was really disappointing. Today for the first time Your lecture provided me with Satisfaction in every corner of my soul. Now I feel confident in writing my interpretation which is exactly what you described of this poem in Exam.. Again Thank you.❤

Like a Cup - Discarded of the Housewife - Quaint - or Broke - A newer Sevres pleases - Old Ones crack - In those lines I don't know why the concept of woman chastity as per contemporary Christian faith hits my mind. In my sense, if one woman who is represented as the cup comes out from the shelf which may be the patriarchal barrier then she will lose her virginity by disobeying the patriarchal God what we see in Tennyson's 'The Lady of Shalott' poem in the mirror cracking portion and here it may be depicted with the crack of cup. Could this be a possible way to interpret it?
