Super amazing work! One suggestion though, when poring a large amount of epoxy resin at once the mass of resin tends to overheat and crack, which is probably why your egg got so hot and started foaming out of the top as well. To help mitigate this you can pour the resin in smaller layers waiting a while for each to cure most of the way and then pouring the next layer. Alternatively you can use a polyester resin which can be poured in larger quantities with less catalyst. Hope this helps! Love your work.
@robertc496 жыл бұрын
rotate the egg while curing, it could be hollow with 1/4inch resin on inside walls, then you could put lights inside egg. use glow in the dark pigment
@skeletonboxers73366 жыл бұрын
was gonna suggest this as well! instead of in layers from the bottom to the top. you could pour some resin in the hole, rotate it around so it can coat all the sides and let that cure. repeat with more resin until its thick enough (or full)

For anyone curious about the heating of the resin, When you mix the resin and The hardener together new chemical bonds begin to form causing an exothermic reaction. Energy is released in the form of heat as the mixture catalyzes. ... So the higher the ambient air temperature and volume of epoxy used; directly corresponds to the amount of heat generated, hence why when he put a ton in, the effects were more dramatic. For the curious minds out there!

@@GeethaShreeN the larger tables usually use a 2:1 ratio epoxy and even with a deep pour epoxy they try to limit to pouring 2-3 inches each pour to stop this kind of reaction. Kind of a bad idea to pour that thick and on top of cardboard...fires are rare but it's not impossible.

Next time, when you're pouring your resin, if you're pouring it into a large space like an ostrich egg instead of a small mold that's only two or three inches deep, do it in installments. If you do it all at once into a large area it gets too hot and will start steaming and bubbling over and cracking the egg like it did. Next time do three or four pours and let each layer set completely. It takes more time but it will prevent the cracking and the resin won't start seeping through the egg like it did. Also, if you put it in a vacuum chamber, it will remove the bubbles from the resin. I like the bubbled look in this particular piece, it reminds me of an alien egg about to hatch, but just for future reference, if you want it to look more like glass, put it in a pressure pot.
@imwithstupid0866 жыл бұрын
Some other things he could've done: 1) Mix more calmly. Rough mixing whips in air into the resin. 2) Use (low shrinkage) polyester instead of epoxy. It's cheaper, better suited for large casts, and can be less exothermic than epoxy. Vinylester could be okay as well. Anyway, the project turned out beautifully. The bubbles synergized perfectly with his design.
@imwithstupid0866 жыл бұрын
Some points about your advice: 1) He doesn't have to wait for each course to set completely. Doing so will highlight pour lines. Pouring at the soft gel state should be okay. 2) Vacuum chambers cause multipart resins to boil over, especially if you add stuff to it or have as many bubbles as his mix did. You lower the ambient vapor pressure, resin mixture starts to boil because of the lower boiling point. Subjecting the project to a pressure chamber alone will clarify the resin (if it doesn't crack the egg first).
@envyalakye47666 жыл бұрын
Amanda is not wrong on this ^^
@court23796 жыл бұрын
While correct all the bubbles would sit at the top of each pour instead of uniformly distributed. Even vacuuming it is probably hard to get rid of them all, and in this case they are probably wanted. I am thinking keep it rotating while curing with several pours. Then the top surface of the intermediate pours will not be visible from an edge.
@hollt6936 жыл бұрын
The other thing that might work to get rid of bubbles without a vacuum chamber (at least it works with silicone) would be to pour a very thin stream from high up in order to let the trapped gases escape on the way down.

Your final piece looks amazing. I'm glad you were able to make the most of the situation and work around the crack that formed. Just as a suggestion if you find yourself working with Glaze Coat brand epoxy again pop it in the microwave on defrost for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes at a time depending on how much resin mix you're insta-curing. Yeah, that's right insta-cure. running your mix on a defrost cycle will force out all of your bubbles and also provides the added benefit of accelerating the dehydration of your mix which in turn is what cures it immediately. The space created by the bubbles expanding while your mix began to overheat was probably the culprit that cracked your egg. now the mix becoming that hot to begin with i can only surmise may have been a combination of your set lighting and the eggshell's chemical composition or it may also be that the egg was glazed by your source as a preservation method and that's sometimes done with sodium silicate which may or may not have catalyzed a volatile reaction. All purely conjecture from a non-professional, non-chemistry passing, high school dropout with an interest in epoxy and way too much time on my hands. Keep up the awesome videos, as a fresh subscriber I look forward to enjoying more of your content. stay fresh my dude.

There is a thermal reaction happening there. The more it cures, the hotter it gets and the hotter it gets, the faster it cures. It's a self-feeding cycle there. You can slow it down to prevent cracking and allow it to settle better without cracking the egg if you chill the egg while it sets. It's also a good idea to shut off heat sources, like those lights. It's probably why the egg got so hot, those lights were heating it up and making it cure faster! Also, the resin gets thermal cracks when it cures too fast. It would probably also reduce resin sweating since there won't be as much internal pressure building up due to inconsistent cure rates in the depth. A longer cure time would allow it to continue pushing out the top. Btw, love all the bubbles in the resin! It makes it look even cooler. Fyi, mixing it really vigorously gives you the bubbles. I watch a resin turner that uses his power drill to stir and he has bubbles like there's no tomorrow! Super cool design, great effect and I'm glad the resin issues and cracking did not ruin the project.
