Bob Nice Accomplishment!!! I am a retired Psychologist, can I just make an observation as a dedicated viewer over the years. Learn slow diaphragmatic breathing it is relaxation training. During the adrenaline rush of your "fish battles" excitement triggers cortisol to flood the brain resulting in negative state of physiological stress flooding thought, muscle movement and problematic attention span- sabotaging your target goals !! Stress and relaxation are incompatible states. Off the field Practice scientific progressive relaxation , utilized as a tool will effectively countercondition stress for relaxation during the "Comp event" and give you the competitive edge toward a future 1st Place victory!!!!

I try and do some deep breathing in between beats during the breaks, but I know I can get amped up during the fishing. I have to constantly tell myself to slow down after a fish catch.

A 10' 6wt Hardy Ultralite and a Hardy Ultradisc 6000 Cassette reel. Rio 3' intermediate midge tip line.

Does the competition aspect of fly fishing kinda take the relaxation out of it?

Yes it does. But I like the range of experiences with fly fishing. It's fun to get up in the high country on a small mountain stream or lake and feel relaxed. I also like being competitive and challenging myself to get better in my fishing ability. I think there is room for both in one's fishing.
