I totally agree with you, I wish that we don't have to be the ones locked up in our houses because someone could rape us, or we have to dress in like a huge bag so that men won't say anything about our bodies and try to touch us, and more. I can totally see where he’s coming from. It’s 1AM, it’s dark and nighttime and to get there she’d have to go all alone, maybe in public transport or even a taxi both of which pose dangers to women who are alone and there could be anyone around including drunk people or predators so of course he doesn’t want her exposed to those dangers, especially in clothes that would make her a more attractive target to those kinds of people with ill intentions. He’s not trying to control Hattie, he’s just worried as you can tell at the end when he sees she’s determined to go then he decides the safest course is to just go with her. As you said, it’s an expression of concern!
