RE: Hailey's comment about just changing the number on the bottom of her club and calling an 8 a 9. That's EXACTLY what the industry has been doing for decades. I have a 30 degree 4 Iron downstairs somewhere from the 1960's. By the early-mid 2000's, that amount of loft was a 6 iron. Nowadays, you might even find 7 irons around 31-32 degrees. Meanwhile, they keep having to add wedges to fill the gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge, which has stayed at 56 degrees, because that's what works so well out of the sand. It used to be a 52 degree wedge was called a 'gap' wedge, because it fit right between the sandie and the 48 degree pitching wedge. But now, with c44-45 degree pitching wedges, you need a 2nd gap wedge or you'll have a 20-25 yard gap between wedges, which are supposed to be precise, dialed in green hitting clubs. Then at the other end of things, you have clubs like Hailey's 9 wood that probably have the loft of a 1970's 5 wood. It's all a marketing trick, and it's all silly! At the end of the day, you still have sets like Hailey's with 4 woods and 9 irons, just like my parents' old 1960's sets with driver, brassie, 3 and 4 woods, 2 through 9 irons, and a "wedge". You just have different names for them now, with the 2 3 and 4 irons falling off one end of the conveyor belt, and 3 wedges coming up on the other end; and with 3-5-7 or 3-7-9 or 4-7-9 wood sets, with maybe a hybrid replacing the shortest wood. But they are all still doing the same jobs they always did, at similar yardages. Silly. But it is what it is. I just try to keep that in mind on the rare occasions I play golf now, and not get bent out of shape about the number on the bottom of my, say, 130 yard club. Just hit it.
