==========
We have a three-day challenge ahead of us: crafting benches solely from leftover scrap wood. These benches will serve as seating for a cherished, massive dining table that belonged to my late grandmother, who passed nearly 5 years ago. In a friendly intergenerational contest, my boomer dad and I, a young millennial, will vie to see who can fashion the superior bench within this tight three-day timeframe. Can we complete the task in time? Will we honor Grandma's memory? Join us in the ultimate showdown: Boomer vs. Millennial!
Thank You @Lincolnstww for the inspiration - • I challenged a 78 year...

I lost my dad when I was 14 and I never got to do those things with him. Now I have a 18 month old son and I promise we will be doing this stuff in my cabinet shop one day. Thank you for the good content. This world would be a good place if everyone had a dad like yours.

Lets see ... Point to dad for simplicity - Point to Ryan for design Point to dad for time of finish even working alone - Point to Ryan for working around the whoops with the sander 10 points to both for the level of love surrounding both benches and an everlasting memory made together Conclusion - No one lost this build off and all involved came out winners. Great job to both of you! 👍👍

I would probably retroactively add some dowels on those waterfall corners. If you do it with the wood the dowel penetrates, they won't be an eyesore, or do a really contrasting color to make it a feature rather than a bug. Just a sidegrain glue-up (or end-grain which is slightly stronger) has about 1/8 of the strength of long-grain. If you have many people sitting on it, some a bit heavier than others, and someone wiggles side to side, it just might snap at the seam. Another point of concern is longevity as a non-mechanical joint (just glue and no crossing wood fibers) can work itself loose as the glue can't keep up with the changing temperature and humidity unless the space is well regulated in terms of moisture content. Still think you bench did get the upper hand on your old man. But would be a shame to have it not last a few decades at least.

You're both winners in my opinion. My dad had passed and I never got to challenge him like this. Cherish these memories. With that said, i give it to dad as the build winner. I was really liking the random length boards you used. Then you covered them up with a design that would really be better as a table layed out on plywood. Why you wasted a beautiful wood pattern like that only to cover it up is beyond me. Had you left it simple I'd likely have said pops was second. Pops wins this challenge.

Well, I like the quilt triangle pattern. However, I have concerns about the longevity of that waterfall edge with just an end grain glue joint over time. If I were buying them, I would have to go with pops because the legs are set in a way that limits sideways pressure. Both of them are beautiful.

What a great time for father and son. My son lives 4 states away but we both do woodworking and trade ideas and plans. This is too close to call so my suggestion is either wear father and son chicken hats together or leave the one hat hanging on the hook. Simplicty and working alone makes Tommy's bench great. Ryan the quilt look is wondeful. My grandmother was an old order amish quilter so yours brought a tear to my eye.

Surprising you're using a normal random orbit sander at your shop and not a geared one (Mirka, 3M, Festool). If you guys use those even fairly often, that stuff will pay itself back in no time. The sanding speed difference is crazy. Also using 3M Cubitron II discs speeds up the process more. You've probably seen the Katz-Moses testing video on it though.

I used to have a digital caliper, but then I bought a Mitutoyo digital caliper and realized that what I previously thought was one, was just crap. Seriously they are accurate, measure even if it's off when you move it and the battery lasts forever. And the action is so much smoother than a cheapo one. Sure they cost about 6 times more, but boy are they worth it. I had to get one for my home as well since my cheapo one kept needing a new battery each time I eventually wanted to use it.

Love Both. The mosaic triangle pattern looks like snow flake to me. I love it. Dad bench is really nice too. Dad got Sturdy legs but the bench is flexing. Ryan bench is sturdy but the miter leg can fail but can be fixed easily using more tirangle 😅. I think dad screwed at the screw. It should had been screwed from inside the leg and Ryan you really nailed it ! I mean there is a lot of nail 🤣 I'll pick Ryan. 🥳🎉
