small correction on the vampire survivors section, it actually isn't the first of its kind of genre. It was heavily inspired by a mobile game called magic survival.

Oh my gosh I need this. There are a couple NES cartridges that had multipacks of games on them that were legitimate licensed developers for Nintendo, but the games were all tiny and most of them were glitchy and unfinished. I think one of them was the Cheetahmen or something. These look amazing. I’m quite the opposite with the look of games as long as it plays well. I love a well-made game with a simple retro aesthetic, so I would be all over this.

i'm just wondering why this took so long, it's making me want to get my hopes up for the metanarrative which could be an incredible concept for an action 52 parody game, but it's probably not gonna be anything bombastic
@melephs_cap7 ай бұрын
Why it took so long to...make 50 games while working on Spelunky 2 for much of the dev cycle? I think the team simply made good games and that takes a while. Also if you read the Edge magazine coverage they say the game has taken about the same time as they estimated it would have taken the fictional company to make 50 games, funnily enough.
@BAKAGAlJIN7 ай бұрын
I'm an NES kid, too, and this definitely had an Action 52 vibe to it. I also wasn't really looking forward to it... more or less looking forward to when it was finally finished, so there is the remote chance he gets working on Spelunky 3. After I watched the presentation, I definitely got a bit interested. The concept around them all being connected by the fictional company is intriguing. I'll give it a chance for sure and happily hand Mr. Yu my hard earned dollars.

It looks like a fun time. But unless one of the games is Cheetahmen III it won't be a GOTY contender.

I recently picked up an old Intellivision console and a number of games. Ufo50 will probably hit a similar vibe to me as I'm feeling right now experiencing an 'obscure' games library. I actually think Ufo50 could work sold as an mini console similar to the NES-classic or Atari flashback style of modern plug-in-play consoles.
@melephs_cap7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I was always gonna follow this game because Derek and his pals worked on it, but I am getting more and more sold on it myself. Most of the genres don't really appeal to me (especially since I don't have anyone who'd wanna play the mulitplayer modes), and I'm not sure I trust Derek to craft a very complex metanarrative given he doesn't historically do prewritten story. But I think it will be a one-of-a-kind experience, and I absolutely trust the team to deliver a few really satisfying games to anyone interested enough to pick it up.

I felt this way when I saw this too. The Xanagears of the world will defend it and say it is great before it even comes out. Wii sports is probably the best non 8-bit style game pack game that has ever come out. Warioware and Mario Party also come to mind as game pack games that are good. Fusion Frenzy on X-box was a fun one and the PlayStation EyeToy was also fun.

I'm glad Derek Yu found a way to monetize the products made from Game Jams. It's odd that game devs do those Game Jams to make neat 1 note ideas that at best need to be fleshed out by another 3 or 4 years of development and many more mechanics/levels. This collection just looks like what a average day browsing through a random Game Jam Submissions in all honestly. Probably alot more polished and some are full length RPGs, rougelites, and Metroidvanias but mostly looks like a bunch of fleshed out game jam ideas that were long enough of games for the NES and Arcade days but couldn't pull even $5 from the random player browsing the steam store for each individual game.

I do believe at least one is a longform RPG (i.e. around 20 hours long) and many will be very challenging like Spelunky, so "small" is a matter of perspective. But fair.
