Power to weight ratio is a great tell that whether an engine is enough to pull that car. However, most people while buying cars don't take it into account. This is kind of a silly mistake that people do and later get worry that why their car is not giving good fuel mileage. I calculated these numbers for 5 of the cars that sells frequently in Indian Automobile market and it gave me an accurate picture as to when companies are just doing marketing gimmick and their car is not that powerful.
I highly suggest everyone to check this number before forming a car buying decision.

Actually calculation is very simple - take bhp of a car and curb weight. Simply divide bhp by curb weight, the result is bhp per 1 kg. Now multiply that by 1000 to get your bhp/ton. Currently Industry standard is 100 bhp/ton, below it car goes towards being under powered and above it goes towards Overpowered. For example, XUV 700 Diesel is 182 bhp and 1770 kg curb weight, so 182/1770 = 0.102 and multiply by 1000 = 102 bhp/ton.
