I think I need to clarify two things about the Eversolo BEFORE our follow-up video later in the week. First, while the A8 has what appear to be 2 HDMI ports, one in and one out, it is NOT a multi-channel or home theater device. The Eversolo will not pass through nor send a video signal to your TV. It is also a stereo-only product, meaning you cannot send a native multi-channel or surround sound signal to its HDMI ARC/eARC input and get surround sound. If you connect this to your TV (like I did), you must make sure your TV is outputting PCM Stereo via its HDMI ARC/eARC port to work with the A8. Many TVs do this automatically, so there's no need to worry, but if yours doesn't, that's the setting to check for. The HDMI port found with the A8's digital outputs is known as an IIS (or i2S) connection. While it uses a form of an HDMI-style termination, it is NOT an HDMI connection in the traditional sense. Apologies if I was unclear about this or simply glossed over it without further explanation. This is a relatively new way to connect digital components, such as a streamer or transport, to an outboard DAC, but it is not yet standardized*. (*source: Wikipedia) PS Audio and a few other companies use this digital connection method on their devices rather than the older-school method, which was RJ-45 or similar. The A8 supports DSD and PCM output through this IIS/i2S HDMI-looking port. Like the HDMI input, though, the HDMI-looking IIS/i2S port DOES NOT support video and is NOT INTENDED for home theater use. Hope this clears up any and all confusion, and I apologize for any misunderstandings. We will no doubt discuss this topic and more in greater detail in our follow-up video.

@robinsonbrand : This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but since I deem it important: The DMP-A6 outputs MultiChannel 5.1 via it‘s HDMI out. This is for multi-layer SACD‘s , which I play vie SMB from either PC or NAS. It also outputs DTS ( CD ). For the SACD, you can select the 2.0 or 5.1 stream on the DMP-A6‘s touch screen. As far as I can see, the A8 does not offer this.

I have the A6 Master edition which I have also upgraded the internal power supply, I had an A8 on trial to compare, as I do not use the in-built DACs (I use a Chord m-scaler/hugo TT2 combo) the difference is not easily heard, there is a tiny difference, but I was not able to blind A/B them. Also, the latest firmware for the A6 now includes the same fully suited functions as the A8, so DSP, PQM and EQ with multiple settings for all inputs is brilliant. All I can say is a big thank you to Eversolo, A6, A6ME and A8 are just fantastic. for reference I have a Michi x3 and B&W 804 D4s downstream of my chord combo DAC 🙂 a set up made in heaven !

Hi Kristi and Andrew! I purchased the DMP-A8 when it first hit the US market last year. So far, it has been fantastic. I took the leap and spent the extra money based on some early reviews. I now use it as my dedicated media hub and utilize it's internal DAC. It's that good. I use the XLR outputs directly to a pair of monoblock amplifiers and a powered subwoofer via the RCA outputs. It has superb sound quality (dare I say audiophile high-end level sound?), super flexible in it's usability with a myriad of inputs and outputs. It is so good, I removed my separate Denafrips Ares II DAC and Denafrips Hades preamplifer and use the Eversolo as a unified source/preamp instead. The screen and it's multitude of options and VU meters are great. The internal DSP and PEQ has been a life saver with my difficult-to-control room acoustics. The A8 is built exceptionally well and feels and sounds like the asking price. In general, the internal streamer is quite good, but I have just a few nits to pick. It is a little sluggish scrubbing or switching through tracks. The drill down in streaming menus and accessing existing playlists and favorites can be a little clunky. I previously had the Bluesound Node, while the A8 sounds better, the Node's menu format may be just a little bit easier to operate. All in all though, this thing rocks...highly recommended.

I bought the A8 at retail instead of putting up with them. Had it not performed I would've returned it, but seeing as how it did (and then some) I paid the credit card bill and this baby is MINE! Glad I did, too, as it's harder to get your hands on than unobtainium.

At 4:57 we see the selection for using both XLR and RCA outputs at the same time. If you select both you lose most of the low bass from the XLRs. I thought there was a crossover doing this or something in the DSP/EQ doing it but there wasn't. Turned down the vol on my subs and the mains had no bass using both outputs. I switched back and forth for 2 days and somehow the little SMSL D6S budget DAC sounds a little better driving amps directly via XLR than the A8.

I've been testing an A-8 extensively for a month. I'm returning it however. The preamp is not up to the quality of the rest of the system. I'm using an inexpensive Topping Pre90 preamp with the A8 as DAC only. It's a much better sound. Even though both units use similar chips for the preamp function. Topping just implements it better. Overall the A8 is great value, especially with components of similar price. But if your other system components are better, you'll hear its flaws. I'm now using a Denafrips R2R DAC, which is much better sounding.
@2kdesignstudios726 ай бұрын
I get it. Some products have functionality to check a box. I've got 3 DACs in my HT setup (TV, BD player, Yamaha HT Receiver). Only the receivers DAC actually gets used. It's nice when a product that has multiple functionalities actually does them all well. Streamer ✓ DAC ✓ Preamp ✓. And to me this level of performance is commensurate with the price. You wanna better DAC, buy the A6, but your gonna spend more or at the very least take up more space. I hate when people discount space (or in this case, saving it) as a commodity. To most (arguably all) consumers size, looks, ease of use, cost and the Almighty sound quality all matter. If you can check all those boxes, you've got a real winner.
@scivieler7686 ай бұрын
I've had the A8 for a couple of days and I'm very happy I returned it. It's a great build and I like all the possibilities. But I don't like the sound it produces at all. It sounds flat, thin and harsh. It made me lose the fun of listening to my music. Firstly I swapped the A8 with my current dac. Later I connected my dac to the Xlr input of the A8. So I have also tested the pre amp of the A8. It hardly added or changed anything positive compared to when my dac is directly connected to my power amp.

Secondly, you have to have the rca plugs in rca inputs. Next, in order to get the true capability of the pre you have to change settings so there is only one input and output on at a time. Then you have to make sure the pre is in bypass mode. If it’s not in bypass then the dsp will be engaged and it will sound like digital trash Lastly, the dac in it sucks. Add a dedicated dac to it and you will see how truly expansive and wrap around soundstage it is capable of

I always ask this question and never get an answer. How are these dedicated music streamers any better than, say, a Shield TV running Plex or JellyFin with full bandwidth into a traditional AVR? Don't have to worry about onboard DACs since the connection is straight digital. And you can't really ask for better than your actual TV in terms of displaying metadata and high-res artwork (plus you're already using a decent remote to control everything). I mean, I look at these devices -- they're definitely nice-looking and I can easily see them in my EC but I feel like I already have this functionality in a potentially better and simpler incarnation.

How would you compare the Eversolo DMP-A8 to the DMP-A6 Master Edition? And does the DMP-A6 have the same CD rip function?
@matthewjoy18646 ай бұрын
I lived with the A8 for several weeks as I awaited service on my Modwright tube stage moded CXN. For the first week I used it as an all-in-one and I was left there quite unimpressed, but then when I disengaged the preamp/volume control, in favor of the passive volume stage of my Van Alstine SET 120 control, the performance improved quite substantially, leading me to conclude the preamp/volume control of the A8 significantly lowers the ceiling of its DAC/Streamer performance. I'd give it an A as a DAC/Streamer in its price class, but a C as an all-in-one front end, so just consider that depending on how you plan on using it.
@delvalle92566 ай бұрын
How does it compare with your modded CXN ? Do you turn on digital pre amp on the cxn for digital volume control at least?
@andrewrobinsonreviews6 ай бұрын
The volume output varies based on how you configure the outputs. If you isolate RCA or XLR versus leave them both on. Did you try that? Also, applying or turning on the DSP functionality lowers the output by 5dB in order to preserve headroom as some may choose to boost certain frequencies versus cut them.
@matthewjoy18646 ай бұрын
@@delvalle9256 The moded CXN is far superior across the audio spectrum, either with the preamp engaged or bypassed vs the A8, but it's a significant modification with a world class tube stage, and the modification isn't being done anymore... So it's not really a fair fight. There's only something like 35 Modwright moded CXNs out there.

Been waiting for this one! Great video! I clicked on your Amazon link Andrew (to buy the A8) but unfortunately it appears Amazon is out of stock. 😢 I have been needing a new pre/dac/streamer for a few years now and this checks all the boxes for me. After I get my hands on the A8, the only thing left to fill the hole in my system is a new power amplifier. I have Model 5 speakers so, with the A8 (whenever it comes back in stock), I am thinking I need a power amplifier with a little warmth....I just dont want the whole chain to end up sounding too "sharp" on my ears resulting in fatigue. Then again I suppose I could just use the A8s PEQ to adjust to taste. This really seems like a fantastic product! Any advice on accompanied power amplifiers is welcome too. Thanks Andrew, and I love the new trial format of a second video every week!

It is interesting that it sounds better than the Classe Delta Pre (and you can tell how financially constrained Classe is… they’ve been using that same case and screen for well over a decade I think? Since I had my CP-800 for sure) at the price point the Delta Pre is at. Steve Huff’s review of the A8 was not nearly as glowing and he claims the Rose RS130 is still better in terms of sound quality. However, the PEQ would make this a very very tough call between those two as I believe Rose has said that they do not and will not be including EQ of any kind in their units.

Eversolo came and mopped the floor with the competition, especially in it's price range. I've had the A6 and got the A8 for the i2s output and analog preamp capabilities. NAD isn't comparable because they're always built with trash parts the folks at the factory have found laying around - always somewhere C-tier capacitors that guarantee a short lifespan, conveniently placed close to hot heatsinks to amplify the effect. NAD, Cambridge Audio and Audiolab are notorious for this. I've seen a dead Audiolab 8200CD with about 20-30% of the cheap chinese PSU caps already blown open at the top, it's nuts. I've opened and thoroughly inspected the A8 and it's a league above in terms of build quality, 'worst' parts I've seen in an Eversolo are Samyoung electrolytics which are robust and been used by SoTM for example for many years while NAD is mostly stuffed with C-Tier stuff like Lelon and the likes.

Here is my concern as someone who wants to buy a premium separate system and keep it a long time if not forever. What happens when the software stops working, or a bug kills it, etc. Is it not possible to have digital connections like HDMI and dacs without being locked into a dying system? I wish there was a preamp or integrated amp (ala the Marantz model 30 where premium power meets efficiency) with HDMI and digital connections that didn't rely on software that would die

Great review. Imagine this having dirac included for bass management. Since you brought up NAD, what about the 658 and or 399 you reviewed? You classified those as sterile sounding. What is eversolo doing that doesnt make it sound sterile to you? Also, when paired with amps you tried, is sound quality better than the rotel ras5000 you just reviewed and loved?
@andrewrobinsonreviews6 ай бұрын
The Eversolo doesn't have an internal amp, so the character of the amps I have in-house shines through when I use the A8. The NAD gear uses types of Class D (or hybrid amps) that I just don't like --but that's just me and my opinion. When paired with the 8300XP, I get Levinson vibes. When paired with the A35.2 from Primare, it was more reminiscent of my Krell or Rotel amps back in the day.

I valued Kristi's views on the product from the perspective of how my partner would feel about 'living' with it just as much as Andrew's product evaluation and comparisons. Putting that section in was genius, makes what you do unique and added some welcome unscripted opinion and humour (see recent rants on NAD, Diamond Series style bypass and Kristi's take on power amps or the universal remotes in the 21st century). As entertaining as these moments are, they also publicly underline your independence and credibility in the space. Keep the old format and get trash talk? Pretty please 🤣

I'm assuming that one set of outputs (RCA or Balanced) can be set up for high pass and the other for low pass) is that a correct assumption. 3) Does the DSP feature work on analog inputs?

I had the Eversolo DMP-A6 for probably 7 months and I love it. I have Parasound JC2BP preamp and A21+ power amp and Focal Sopra 1's in a medium size room. . I used the A6 as a DAC and streamer. I had my eyes on the DMP-A8 since it first came out. The HDMI earc, more digital inputs were something i wanted. All the reviewers was saying the preamp was extremely good as well. After seeing your review i ordered one thinking i will could sell the A6 and JC2BP preamp and that would cover the cost plus have some extra cash. The A8 as a preamp was really good if i used the DSP to make the sound a bit warmer to match the Parasound. But unfortunately the drop in gain was dramatic and I would have to have the volume on the A8 to -25db and have the gain on the power amp maxed out to get any kind of loud music ( 85-90db ). I normally had the power amp at half gain with the Parasound preamp and still have lots more headroom if i wanted really loud for movies. If i didn't have a 300wpc power amp, it probably wouldn't really work well as a preamp if someone liked loud movies and music. Especially if you had low sensitive speakers. Ill keep it as a preamp for a while and see how it works as my daily driver. I may have Parasound JC2BP for sale if someone is looking for one. Lol.
