I Connected 10 Mics to the Rodecaster Pro (How to Add More XLR Inputs)

The Rodecaster Pro is an awesome podcast/streaming studio with 4 XLR inputs, but what if you need more inputs? Is that possible? This ridiculous videos shows you a few ways to add more XLR inputs to the Rodecaster Pro.
I definitely went overboard here, but the fundamental idea is fairly solid and could be a good solution for you.

The most ridiculous video you’ve ever made? One of the most AWESOME!!! 🤪 Well…I am a bit of audio/tech geek (well, I guess just a geek 🤓)…funny…I friend’s birthday popped up on FB and I was reminded of how we used to do dumb, livestreaming, radio shows. (I had TOTALLY forgot about that!!!) We had a lot of fun…chatting with our little group, pulling pranks, basically just goofing off and having fun! Also, I ran sound at my church my parents helped start - 25 YEARS ago! Setting up and tearing down EVERY Sunday was a BEAST…but I can look back know and see I learned a lot. Ok….enough reminiscing - but the *good* thing was this video showed that there are SOOOO many things that can be done with what you have! Awesome! Thanks for making and sharing this! 😁

You counted! Nice. I like to make more than one video about a tool, since anyone who buys it will likely want to know what else they can do with it, or someone who's thinking about buying it might want to justify the purchase. Pplus it's way easier on my budget than buying new gear every week 😁

it's not at all a ridiculous video, it confirmed what I hoped to achieve with this Rodecaster ( my Pro 2 just arrived today). Although I won't be doing this with multiple mics (maybe sometimes 1 for my acoustic instruments), but I have several keyboards and an electronic drum set I will be connecting via a mixer. Playing them on my own, I won't be using more than 2 keyboards at the same time (only 2 hands, what a shame) so I won't be getting the cacophony you had. For me, it's all about having everything connected and ready to use at all times, and that's what you showed is possible.

WOW, that Wireless Go sounds good! I have three sets of those swirling around in my organization. I uses two pretty regularly as wireless lavs. I need to get one of those faux-newscaster holders for them so we can use them as wireless handheld mics. They sound so good; you'd never guess they were just that little wireless transmitter with a built in mic on it!

Brilliant channel Tom as always. We recently had the need to have 12 guests. Luckily we have two Caster Pros so we put splitters into the 4 channels on both giving us 8 XLR inputs on each (potentially 16 mics). We then bounced the output from one Caster pro onto one USB channel and it worked like a dream, and even simpler than using Garage Band.

@@tombuck Ha ha - it was! And not one we’re likely to repeat anytime soon! 😉 Keep up the great work - always enjoy your channel. By the way both CasterPros will not deliver a signal out of the quarter inch audio outputs out the back for some reason. Any ideas why? I’ve heard others have had similar issues. You get sound ok from the headphone outputs so the cables are fine.

Thanks, great video. I bought the Scarlett 2i2 on your advice. The downside of linking the Scarlett to your laptop and then to the Rodecaster is the delay you'll have on your headphones. And also you can't use the multitrack recording. So you'll have to record on SD and then transfer it to your laptop. I found out that you can also use the monitoring outputs of the Scarlett to add a fifth microphone to your Rodecaster. Use a 1x 3.5mm -> 2x 6.35mm splitter cable and connect your scarlett to the mini jack input for smartphones. In that way you avoid the delay on the headphones and you can use multitrack recording on your laptop.

I did this with my MGX12U to the Rodecaster, and it was great, because I could use the Rodecaster's processing on all microphones at once. The only downside is, I spent money on microphones I didn't need. 😆 I just love switching microphones, I guess I'm sort of a collector.

Tom, great video as always! I use a Scarlette 2i2 with Ecamm and I get blended channels. I think it's because I select that same symbol on the 2i2 that you pointed out in Garage Band. If that's not what is blending my channels, I'm not sure what is... but I get both of my mics in both left and right channels in my finished recording from Ecamm.

@@tombuck It's not the Scarlett forcing the mics left and right. It's the setting in Garage Band. To fix: Create 2 tracks in Garage Band. As stated above Track 1 uses Ch 1 of the Scarlett, Track 2 uses Ch 2 of the Scarlett. They will be mono. Learn your software and routing. Will save you a lot of frustration.

If the situation called for it -it could be cool to use the fact that the Scarlett separates the mics onto L and R. It would allow to create a ‘space’. As if the people on mics were in a room and you could place them in the space.

I’m a high school digital media teacher and I make KZbin videos! I do other stuff too, but those things are my favorites." Now for the actual question. On your suggestion - I purchased the Rodecaster. I previously used the Zoom H6. A problem I'm having with both is I have two mics plugged in - but only 1 will work. The two mics are a Zingyou (Unsure of the model) and Movo LV4-O Omnidirectional XLR Lavalier. When plugged-in together on the Zoom H6 and/or Rodecaster Pro - I can't have both. Any ideas why? Thanks in advance! Wes

Thats when you have to bring in a sound engineer in to control it all. Its good to know it can handle it all. Techs go over this stuff on a regular basis in case they come across an event producer that wants an insane set up, the tech engineer can say, no problem.

Have you ever tried to put two roadcaster pros on one computer? I have two and I'm thinking about trying it out for desktop audio and or zoom calls so there doesn't need to be a mix minus setting when putting one on input and one on output and for the desktop recordings as well. But I think you can do this with scarlet as well, however when I listened really closely the other day when trying the scarlet doesn't sound near as good

If I were to connect another Rodecaster, I’d use the monitor outputs on one into the XLR channel of another, so you’d need a 1/4inch to XLR Y cable (two 1/4 inch in one end for the monitors and a male XLR on the other).

Just on the point of the Head phone AMPS being Noisy, I have conducted my own tests and have concluded it is actually the Microphone Pre Amps that are Noisy.. If you listen to a Mic fader without a Mic connected you will hear the noise. close that fader and the noise goes. If you listen to say the USB with a source connected but no Audio passing it is clean at full volume on the Head Phone Amps. So the result is the noise that is being heard is actually from the Mic Pre amps
@tombuck

I've noticed this too, but for me, that noise doesn't translate to the recording/streams/etc. That lead me to think it's the headphones 🤔

Great video. I was just messing with my Rodecaster Pro the other day wondering how I can get more XLRs. I have a Zoom H5 that has 2 XLR ins for mics. I was gonna get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm and run it out from the H5 to the phone channel on the Rodecaster which takes the other 3.5mm. Would that work as well? I have the gains on the H5 to help control the levels since both will be ran into one channel on the Rodecaster. What are your thoughts?
