I found context for a bunch of these photos. Hopefully somebody enjoys. 1:45 Crowd awaiting the arrival of a Boeing 314 Clipper in Auckland, New Zealand. 7:57 French Minister of War Hubert Lyautey visiting the wounded. Unfortunately can't figure out the location or details on the victims. 11:45 Pedestrians on Granville Street at Hastings Street in Vancouver, Canada. In the background you can see the Birks clock and C.P.R. (Canadian Pacific Railway) station. Taken by photographer Philip Timms. 13:01 Girls learning how to type and use the internet in a digital literacy computer lab in Sierra Leone. The project was funded through the non-profit organisation Develop Africa Inc. which aims to empower African youth to rise above the poverty line. 15:27 In 1967 co-founder of the Black Panther Party Huey P. Newton was arrested after being accused of fatally shooting a police officer in Oakland. The Black Panthers rallied for his release and organized the "Free Huey" campaign which resulted in his conviction being overturned in 1970. Unfortunately I was not able to find the exact time and place of this picture beyond the information given on the poster. 17:07 A little girl in charge of fixing broken string in a spinning mill in Macon (Georgia), USA. Notably the child is so small that she has to climb up the machine to reach the bobbins. Photographer Lewis W. Hine documented working conditions of American children as a field photographer for the NCLC (National Child Labor Committee). 18:29 The photo belongs to a series of pictures taken by Peter Stackpole for LIFE magazine. The spread doesn't seem to include this exact picture but you can recognize some of the same people. "In 1947, when LIFE accompanied 10,000 young men and women to Balboa Beach in Southern California for a seaside romp. This day of surf and sand took place during spring break, and was marked by dancing, boat races, beauty pageants and sunbathing. The evening hours found students aglow in the warmth of bonfires as portable radios churned out the tunes of the day."

Pictures as old as 1913 can have incredible detail, and unusual focus tilt which is indicative of large format cameras used more commonly In the early 1900s. Medium format became more popular with the press, then later "full frame" was available to the masses. Understanding the formats and the typical characteristics they provide would give you a mild advantage to this game!

I feel like the football picture also might have been a wet plate photograph, regarding the edges of the frame. Might was taken pre-sheet film
@OntarioTrafficMan Жыл бұрын
There are incredibly detailed photos as far back as the 1800's but I was surprised there was that level of detail for what was presumably quite a fast film in 1913, considering how it froze the motion in the shot.
@BT-ex7ko Жыл бұрын
My grandfathers best friend for all his life was a press photographer and it always surprises people when they look at any old family photos because of that. Dude literally dragged his large format stuff everywhere and we have some fairly candid photos in incredible quality. I don't think a lot of people know how *good* film is as a medium sometimes when used correctly. It used to trip me up a lot too.
@matthewhunter8971 Жыл бұрын
@B T yup, the negatives themselves hold an incredible amount of detail which will print very large images in a darkroom. A large format camera with 8x10 negative slide is like the equivalent of you shooting a camera with 1.2 million megapixels

Good idea. This leads me to think that so many game modes are possible: one with just running one search in Google, one with two searches, one with usage of image search, one only using Wikipedia, one with only using Wikipedia search one item, one that's timed to 3 minutes but unlimited searches. The thing that makes it hard with limiting your searches is that you need to be good at guessing what level of detail the Internet holds and what words it would use - ie testing research skills. If I think that old plane reg numbers are all listed on a website somewhere, I'd enter the reg number, but if it turns out there is no such website, then this will lead me nowhere at all, and I'd use up my one search. This is really cool in what variety it allows.

A few tricks to help identify or narrow down the year of that American football image would be to notice the edges of the image. This effect is usually produced by glass plate photography in the development stage (although can easily be replicated digitally) which preceded film photography. Any time you see that effect you can almost be sure the photograph was taken pre 1920's usually pre 1900's (of course there were still people using this format for many years and even still to this day so it won't always be the case) The reason the quality is so good is partly because the glass plates on which the image was captured was 6.5 x 8.5 inches (full plate size) compared to film or full frame DSLR's which use the 35mm format. As a photographer I'd shoot on film over digital any day! If you're interested in the process I'd recommend looking up Ansel Adams. He is a true master of this format and there are several great documentaries covering his work and dark room processes.

I really like the concept of this, and how it could integrate "book smarts" historical knowledge into a fun game.

Just had the ultimate rush. Played the game for the first time. 4 Minutes. 3582. Except for one photograph all within a 3 year range. TBH I think I had really great photos. 😅 Love that content and your style. First time viewer, but definitely not last time.

For the DASL photo (13:01) you have two clues (with dates from Wikipedia/Google searching): 1) the LCD flat screen monitors (developed in the mid 90s, earliest affordable was in 1993 from Apple, outselling CRTs in 2003, and predominantly used since 2007); 2) the bottom toolbar area looks like Windows 10, which was released in 2015.

Thank you for making me waste two hours, twenty-three minutes, and fifty-seven seconds of my morning, until I got a score of 4347. You were spot on about the addiction possibility.

You were close with looking at the men's hairstyles, but I thought the women's were pretty obviously late forties, a couple still had victory rolls, and the sort of shoulder length or longer waves that were common then. If it was mid fifties quite a lot of them probably would have had shorter hair and tighter curls. To be fair, it was hard to tell by the clothing, as they weren't wearing very much of it. If they'd been wearing clothes, the lack of any bullet bras would have been a dead give-away for it being the late forties

That photo of the Pepsi trucks just has a certain vibe to it. Those look like International Loadstars, which kept the same body style for a very long time(I don't remember exactly how long lol).

In the first image, I noticed Mt Rangitoto in the background immediately, as I should it’s my city (Auckland) and having walked it it before. So cool
