This hits me in so many ways. I was getting ready since 2019 to move to Japan (Saving a lot of money). My flights and everything were cancelled due to the Rona 12 days before the flight, and I've been trying to enter ever since. They cancelled the working holidays visas, now that I've applied for a school a whole year (I should be starting this april) everything is down again, I'm losing all hope, this is really getting hard by day, anyway, I'm sending you lots of good vibes and positive thoughs even tho is hard right now
Love your dad's funky trousers/pyjamas? in the mirror haha! It's great that your parents could help you practise now while you aren't able to go back to uni - It certainly is difficult not being able to work at university atm!

Sending you resilience from Melbourne! We went through our long lockdowns and I have no advice except to enjoy the company of those close to you. Seems like you’ve got that with your Dad :)
Please don't work too hard, it's important to take a rest for now I think 😄💕 The corona is spreading quickly here in japan too ... Take care Hannah Chan 🥺and your family.

Sorry about the lockdown. But you are not alone. Let’s keep the positive spirit. You father is lovely by the way 😊
Yo Hannah, I just wanna let you know that you’re super cool and I’ve been teaching myself Japanese lately and it’s going pretty well, I learn every day for maybe an hour or 2, and funny enough, I’m actually aspiring to attend oxford university(just felt like saying that)anyways I feel like you can help with a problem I have, I’ve been getting confused with how to pronounce the sound of “o”, sometimes I see English signs in Japan with a line above the o like this ō, but I don’t know how to say it probably, it may sound like oh or oo or something else. This may just be because I haven’t gotten to properly speaking Japanese, only reading and writing hiragana and katakana but I figured I could just get this out the way. If anyone knows what I’m talking about and can explain please do so. Also what was your routine whilst learning Japanese, like how long a day and how many days a week. That’s basically it so I’ll stop blabbering, to say again love your stuff, thanks.

heyy!! every day for an hour or two is BRILLIANT!!! when you see ō in a japanese word written in english characters it means a long o - that means it’s actually two characters, something like おお or おう. (for example, we can write Tōkyō because it’s spelled とうきょう in japanese) we write like this in the Hepburn romanisation system, but there are a few different ways of writing japanese words in english/roman letters! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepburn_romanization en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Japanese so when you see ō, it is pronounced like a long お sound! does that make sense? :) good luck with your studies!!

Hey, well done for teaching yourself, I find it hard to motivate myself and learned much easier with lessons! I think a big reason that this is an issue for English speakers is with romanji! Often in romanji they will write ō as oo, which in English sounds like oo as is moo. ō is pronounced more like oh, in hirigana words with ō are actually spelled ou. They use the line I think to symbolise it is a long constant as you combine the o and u together. At 1:51 Hannah says 動画 (どうが douga) meaning video, this can often be written as dōga. If you listen to how she says it, it's dou-ga not do-ga or do-u-ga. You extend the vowel sound to show there is a u in there too, but the u is not seperate. Hope this helps!!

Thank you both for explaining perfectly, that’s gonna make things so much easier for pronunciation in the future, thanks again

Oh and I was also wondering if you could spare any information on Japanese GCSE since I think you did it, information like websites that have the qualifications and exam details or maybe advise or really anything, you probably did it awhile ago so the exam is probably different but I’d like to try my best to get one more GCSE in
So far while learning Kanji, I can only write Watashi in Kanji while writing and learning hiragana while playing Pokémon in Japanese. I don't think I'll be as good as MissHanake. While learning Japanese I've been making some Japanese friends it takes me time to adjust though I somewhat find Japanese names fun to pronounce like for e.g. I made friends with someone named Masakatsu and someone named Akiko ( the names sounds weird but fun to pronounce. ).

Kanji is difficult it takes lots of practice! I also find it's harder when teaching yourself, you're doing great by learning kanji early on!
