Crazy you found that Garfield stuff, just yesterday I picked up 50 Garfield plush at a rummage sale, $5 for all of them. They were all from 1978 to 1981.

Congratulations on a great haul. I had such a great haul Friday I couldn't fit anymore in my SUV. And my inspiration was guys like you, Matt, John and Lonnie! I said how much for all of them and killed it! My only regret was not going back Saturday. Those referee shirts are nice! Great sellers because girls who work in sports bars love them! The letters on the back are the referees position. B is back judge, H is head linesman. I didn't see the other one. They're especially good sellers if it's by chance the persons initial!

It’s interesting how sellers have different approaches to buying. Personally I stay away from seasonal items (Christmas, Halloween etc) because the window for sales is limited and what doesn’t sell you have to store for another year. The only exemption is snow globes, I will buy those.

I like how the sale comes full circle in that the very first thing you looked at was a pitching wedge, and then at the end, really as an afterthought, you pick up the pitching wedge.

I bought 9 Beatles LPs. I got the White album with white colored vinyl. I got an Abby Road which is a Japanese press with inserts (in great condition). Most of the others are very early albums that are in great shape for their age. This is an experiment. If it turns out to be profitable I have access to a large number of LPs. I would have to do a lot of research, but this source is in the 1000s and most are in better than average condition.

Garfield can be a decent seller but also keep in mind that most Garfield items were mass produced, even back to the late 70s when he came out. You would be surprised at the amount of Garfield items that don't sell for much money, even vintage new in the packaging. Really is just going to depend on the item.
@projectauto75603 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing, but I would recommend being careful with Garfield. I paid $150 at an estate sale for a collection of around 40 Enesco Garfield ornaments, salt shakers, music boxes, toothpick holders, mugs, and trinket holders all from the 80's, but they're slow sellers and most of them aren't worth much. I'm in the profit over $100 but I've got around 10 hours into cleaning them all, researching, and listing them. That buy taught me a lesson to do more research before spending that much on a collection. Unfortunately I only looked one of them up when I was at the sale and the one I looked up had a sold listing of $200+shipping so I figured there was a lot of money to be made on the whole collection. If I had to do it again I would've paid less or not bought them. In the end I'll do ok, but there are other items that are less work and sell better.

QUESTION: When you make a large purchase like this one where you're negotiating the price on each individual item or on smaller groups of items, what is your perspective when you eventually start to sell those items? Do you view it with the perspective of how much you paid for the specific item, how much you paid for the overall purchase or how much you spent that day at all the sales? And what is the best perspective to have as a reseller? For example, I think you paid just over $60 for everything but only 50 cents for that blow mold. If you sell that blow mold for $50, is your perspective that you only paid 50 cents for it and you made a lot of profit? Is your perspective that you paid over $60 for everything and you almost made your money back? Or is your perspective that you spent $200 that day and you're still in the hole by $150?

Two questions... 1. Do you every look up comps for anything while at garage sales? Or do you just edit that part out of your videos? 2. Do you ever open things (boxes, video game cases, etc.) to verify that everything is there? You always seem to buy stuff without doing this. We always check because early on we got burned a few times to find that a DVD was missing or what's in the box was incomplete.
@Gary_Daytona4 жыл бұрын
Hope you don’t mind me chiming in but those question would be a great public survey, maybe several will chime in. For my .02, 1. I do not look up comps at garage sales very often unless it’s in the box and appears to be new or I know it will be easy to find. Now, Estate Sales, I look them up all the time. 2. YES, do that. I got burned when I first started sourcing and I learned the hard way you NEED to open those boxes (that aren’t sealed) and make sure all the items in the box are still there. Sometimes the seller’s word for it and occasionally people remove one item (like the charger) and leave the rest in the box. Price just went down 50%. Hope to see what others do.
@CommonwealthPicker4 жыл бұрын
I do look up comps from time to time but only when the prices are a bit high. If things are cheap I usually just buy. I don’t always open up things. Sometimes I do but I find that speed is important too so I can get to the next sale.
@stephendrake69274 жыл бұрын
@@Gary_Daytona Early on, my wife got burned a couple of times buying DVD sets and discovering when she got home that a DVD is missing. I got burned buying a Coleman propane lantern and the base piece was missing. But in this case, I bought it for $1 and have made good profit selling off the pieces. I guess it depends on (1) the price as if it's low enough you don't care and (2) the item can be parted out if parts are missing. As far as comps... My wife will look up EVERYTHING. But because she does so, she's bought stuff for good profit that I'd never give much consideration to. But if the price is low enough, there's often little need to look up a comp. But, my wife has it in her mind that anything for $1 is a good buy and she's bought many bad $1 buys. I carry a VHS tape in my car for the sole purpose of estate sales that often have VCRs that I want to test before purchasing.
@Gary_Daytona4 жыл бұрын
Stephen Drake, YES, good points I check ALL DVD box sets now for same reason. G arage sales around here are packed and competitive, you snooze, you lose. By the time you look up a comp, you’ve lost out on the next 3-4 things you would have picked up. Personally, I’d rather take a chance, skip the comps, and go with my gut. Sure, you’re going to get burned once in a while, but it’s worth it to keep picking.
@stephendrake69274 жыл бұрын
@@Gary_Daytona There's hardly any garage sales here this time of year. So there's lots of time to spend looking up comps. During the winter when we have lots of garage sales, my wife and I split up and go separately to different garage sales to cover more ground.
@vinyl1Earthlink4 жыл бұрын
I would have bought all the golf clubs and parted them out, if they are a current set. Golfers who lose one club from their set are willing to pay a high price to replace it. The clubs might sit for a long time, but eventually some fellow in Nebraska will discover his 6-iron is missing, and go onto eBay to look for one. You can charge $30-40, but if it's the only one available, he'll buy it.
