Pretty insane, I have been getting hammered on my 90s stuff lately but a 6 to 10 is terrible and PSA should be ashamed

I feel you there, I recently sent a ton of 90s basketball. Most were awesome condition…. Got back 6’s and 7’s. Cracked and sent to SGC and got 9.5s and 10s, resent to psa as crossovers and all grades were now 9s and 10s. Some of those cards went from $50 as a 6 to thousands as a 9 or 10. It’s ridiculous how inconsistent PSA is

PSA is not ashamed. They're in it for the money. They've gotten to where they don't care what grades they give out, because they know people will always submit to them, regardless.

It happens most of the time. I think it's company policy for the graders to deliberately give PSA 6's in customers orders. This is why I buy good looking PSA 6's, crack and resubmit. Most of the PSA 6's on the market are actually 10's

The wild thing here is that PSA profits off their own subjectivity. They want and expect consumers to crack and resubmit. it’s a non-trivial part of their revenue stream that they’re now quite transparent about. It’s all part of the game.

they should have employees that specifically look for situations like this and find out who graded it the 6 and impose some kind of incompetence penalty and repeat offenders are fired. A 1-grade difference is understandable, 3 or 4 is unacceptable and completely undermines the integrity of the entire business.

psa6 is the grade they give you when the grader wants to buy your card later on eBay. I feel like PSA pays more attention to the gem percentage and the value of your order then they do the cards them self. PSA 6 is usually a dent or a major surface issue .

I doubt they buy the card back. I do, however, believe that card graders are required to meet certain criteria of grades per day, based strictly off PSAs policies. Based off the inconsistent grading, it seems they are only allowed to gem very few different cards within their overall capacity of orders that they handle throughout their workday. This looks good in theory and keeps their grading standard looking "tough", but in reality, people are seeing how inconsistent it has made them look.

I’m so glad you did this video because I refuse to buy a PSA 10 card in this hobby. I don’t think grading is a scam, I like graded slabs. I just hate that everyone takes the grade literally and sets up this crazy price structure. I always go back to the example of why should anyone pay $2,000 for a 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey PSA 10 when they can get that same card in a PSA 9 for $200? You video proves my point that grading so subjective and PSA 10 should not be 5-10x more than a PSA 9, or even a PSA 8. Those cards are so close that the price’s between them should be minimal. If you told me a PSA 10 Griffey was $250 and a PSA 9 was $200, OK that would reflect subjectivity. But why anyone in this hobby pays a premium on PSA 10 cards when this video clearly shows PSA is not even close to consistent is beyond me.

Ive had this happen a few times. My theory is.. the 5/6 is always in the middle of an order. I believe the grader wants to keep their "average" down...to look like a "TOUGH" grader.. so they slip in 1 low grade... instead of screwing us over on a bunch of 8s..

If the general collector population would recognize other grading companies card values better, I'd switch in a heartbeat. SGC has been far better at grading, and turnaround times have been excellent. I only send my PC cards there because resell value just isn't there yet.

I've moved on to TAG and am quite happy with their services. If I have a high-end card that I want to liquidate, I will take my chances with the other guys (and for vintage, I use SGC because their turnaround times are the best). But for anything modern PC and even mid-level cards that I might sell down the road, I am using TAG. I know people like to hate on them, but they have the best slab and the most reliable grading. They also honor their turnaround times. I would say they are a tiny bit harsh on front centering (more exacting than PSA). But there is no guessing. For people who complain that it's overkill, I suppose you have to ask whether you want little to no information, or ample data that allows you to understand the assessment. I get that we all resist change, and it's understandable that all of us with high-end cards in other slabs would be slow to adopt something new that we may not fully understand (the algorithms and such). But in every conversation I have had with their head grader, I am won over that they have converted industry standards into their software in a way that will stand the test of time. I am not a bot. And I do not care if others use TAG.Thank you for the content, Neo. Good stuff as usual.

Looks like another example of grading scam. The 6 grade was probably on a day where the graders blow up doll popped a hole the night before and went into to work the next day and took it out on cards. The 10 grade the guy found duct tape to fix the hole in the doll.

I completely agree PSA is a fraud and maybe even grading in general. I just received grades back from PSA last week and the grades came back PSA 5 and 6 for numerous items. I'm original owner on all items submitted, used gloves to handle them and used a loupe and centering tool to review them before submitting. I reached out to PSA and I get canned responses and no apologies.

No surprise, unfortunately. Grading and encapsulating cards are important, but it's a shame the leader and supposed "guardians" of this part of the hobby just miss the mark egregiously on a high percentage of cards. - I split my submissions up because inevitably one of the batches will come back with insane grades from cards all set aside together, and I'd hate that to happen to all of them.

So as someone that is a bulk submitter and has probably submitted close to 50-100k in cards now to a top grading company I can 100% confirm that nearly every order has an issue with a label - that’s after being screened for QC and grades checked - the label is on the backend and if they typed it as a 6 rather than a 9 - it could easily be missed (I see things every order)

I’ve never had a card grade from TAG that raised an eyebrow. I think it has a lot to do with the grader info page where I can identify what docked it. CGC I’ve never really had a dispute on so far. They have been fairly consistent. PSA and BGS though. I’ve have HUGE fluctuations in grades and that is largely due to why I don’t grade with either one of them anymore. SGC my count is too low to really have an opinion.

Say it happens 2 percent of the time where someone fucks up and types in wrong grade or thinks they see a print line. People acting like this should never happen is just silly and laughable. I myself have had this happen with the top 3 grading companies and I resubmitted and have turned 5 and 6s into 9s and 10s it just something that is going to happen no way around it.

One big issue about assigning arbitrary numbers such as fluctuation in value aside from the potential human error or bias when the grading is done, is the lack of an industry wide standard baseline. If all the major companies could work together & work on something to set a baseline standard for the actual grade a card receives to even that aspect out across the industry it would be beneficial to both collectors & the grading companies. Once there is an industry standard, the companies can focus on other elements to be competitive with one another like grading timeframes, enhanced slab features like UV protection/scratch resistance/custom labels etc…

That's why more people need to grade with TAG it's not just a number but an actual score out of 1000 sure you get a 9 but it's a 9/ 889 score and then when the score drops below a certain number it's an 8 an so one so not all 9's or 10's are equal in the tag system !! So much for quality check 1/ 2. What do they actually do? I sent in a card and in the PSA app had 2 pictures of the same card and same PSA certification number. One pic had it in a PSA 9, the other pic had the card in a PSA 10. Which means they graded it a 10 and changed it in quality control. This card had a pop 1 for a PSA 10. Guess they didn’t want to give another 10. PSA is shady!

Some returns we get 75% 10s. While others we get 30% 10s. So it can vary. I will always try to regrade something twice if it didnt get the grade i wanted. Granted, it has to be pretty decent value to make it worthwhile.

Whenever I hear stories like this it always involves PSA. I rarely if ever hear these stories with SGC or CGC. A dealer who I know personally and trust sold a raw Tom Brady card for over 1K with the promise of at least a 9 or a likely 10. Buyer graded the card and it came back a 7. The dealer then asked the buyer if he could crack and resubmit. Dealer paid for rush grading and card came back a 10. Buyer even kicked in for half the grading because of increased value of the card. I’ve seen more examples on YT and always hear stories from hobbyists and dealers at shows. The one common thread is PSA.

paused the video 6 min in to make this comment......i think this further proves that these companies really need to take the subjectivity out of the factor for grading, we have advanced enough with technology where we should no longer have to use the human eye element when grading cards. i know there are some grading companies that do use digital grading now but they are not the mainstream companies that the hobby truly values.....i think its time for PSA to make the switch, yes it will be a big over hall and there will need to be changes in terms of identifying cards graded digitally versus prior graded cards made by the human eye but i think its necessary at this point

I have been screaming from the rooftops that psa has some sort of glitch with the psa 6 grades. I’m not a professional but I do understand a psa 6 on an ultra modern should be a very obvious flaw. I sent a serial numbered BGS 9.5 that I cracked and it came back a 6 so I bought a few more psa 6s to send to sgc and see what they say.

This is what I would check. How much was the card worth at the time of being sent and was it sought after at that time (First grading). Now check todays prices and demands. At what point was it more valuable and has this athlete gained in popularity during the grading duration?

I've done the PSA 6 to a 9 polka a few times on MU1 cards... On those occasions the nagging feeling that I was left with was that the first grader(y'know it probably was a kid in 1st Grade) who gave it a '6' could very well have seen something on the card that second grader missed... and that I missed twice!.. There really should be a consortium of collectors who audit the grading companies every year... Get 200 cards and send them in random assortments to the big 3/4 grading co.s and publish the results... These companies need an incentive to strive for consistency that they clearly don't yet feel... Ya feel me, PSA?!?!... I would pay to support that

I attempted to cross over a huge rookie card that was a BCG 9 with 10’s on corners and edges, a 9 on surface and 8.5 on centering to PSA. I wasn’t risking cracking this card myself and messing it up. By all examples of PSA grading I had seen this card was easily a PSA 10. Beckett is notoriously tough on centering but PSA isn’t as bad, PSA would not cross it over to a 10. A psa 10 would have took it from a $900.00 card to about a $3,000.00 card. It’s so frustrating to see so many PSA 10’s of this card with the EXACT same centering. I paid them $140.00 for a service I don’t feel was fairly done.

I just got back 2 dragon scale Dak Prescott psa 6 # out 89 and both cards were pack fresh lol meanwhile I had a mosaic honeycomb kirk Cousin with a surface scratch and centering issue get a 10 . Psa is just like gambling in my eyes

I have experienced a 2018 Topps Chrome Ohtani came back a PSA 6 and when I resubmitted it got a PSA 8...I have never seen a card going from PSA 6 to PSA 10.

Maybe its not as common with sports card but in Pokemon we're used to very clean cards being docked to 6 for any minor surface issue like a dent. Whereas both BGS and CGC wouldn't dock the card to an auto 6 like PSA does. This could be something along those lines.

This similar thing just happened to me, sent 20 cards 10 got 10s 1 8 rest 9s, and 1 got a 6. A Brock purdy purple shock and I thought for sure was a 10 as it didn’t have the print lines others did, I’m going to be trying this same thing when it comes back in. Maybe it’s just one certain grader or as someone mentioned something to do with statistics with their grades and being “strict”.

anything that has a bend, valley, etc. (even the slightest) will come back a PSA 6. Thats the highest grade they will give. Seems a bit steep to me but that it what they do. Ive sent in thousands of cards and all of my PSA 6 modern cards had some of the issues mentioned above.

Could the graders be issuing out PSA 6's deliberately so they can buy the cards for a rock bottom price on Ebay etc?

I had a PSA 6 and I saw a black spec on the rear of the card, I cracked the slab, the black spec was just a piece of something that came off in a second, I resubmitted it and got a PSA 10.

This is why I quit using PSA and only use SGC. I don’t care if they sell for less currently. I like my cards graded accurately

@@BrianPinas9 seem to accurately grade hundreds of my cards 🤷‍♂️. Only a few out of HUNDREDS that I disagreed with. Whereas “gem mint” doesn’t remotely mean gem mint at PSA on a frequent basis

I've had a similar experience with an ultra modern, which I couldn't find any significant defect on, getting a PSA6, and it being a numbered card out of /20. Only thing I saw possibly was the player image being OC, but only by about 60-40. I anticipated a 9, possibly 8, but NEVER thought it would get a 6. I debated on getting it regraded, but decided against it because it honestly didn't have the value that would make it worth it. I've got a fairly good eye and out of the 100+ cards I've graded so far, I have yet to get anything below an 8 except for this one card. 🤷

I bet they do that to artificially inflate the value of other cards for all you know the grader had one of those/20 an wanted theirs to be a pop 1 an if they can control that you don't think they will lol 😂😂😂

I recently got back a card at graded a 3. To be fair, I didn't expect it to get better than a 7 or 8, but a 3 makes me worried and upset, and I start thinking "what the hell did I miss?" This is for my PC so I'm not too worried. I am curious if the card could do better else where. It's a 1st edition Redeyes from a Yugioh starter deck.

I went PSA 5 to 10 in one of my videos. You weren't grading for the grade were you??? lol. For TAG it isn't AI. Grading algo also should not be adjusted. I asked many times on this. Took a long time to get answers.

The fact that people pay so much more for PSA cards is one of the dumbest things ever. TAG 10 is far superior yet they sell for like half of what a PSA 10 goes for bc card buyers and investors are so dumb and slow to catch on.

All that means is you should start buying up all the TAG slabs you can ! If I ever get back into the hobby I will only be buying TAG slabs for the PC !

Grading isn’t a scam, this is not very common. I would still say the overwhelming majority of cards are graded accurately. However, we do place way too high of a premium on modern graded cards

I don't know how many times I've said this, but I have seen many videos this year from random collectors on youtube where they sent in modern cards and got 5-7 grades on cards that look mint with no obvious flaws.

I usually see the micro crease when PSA gives a 6. I crack 6, 7, and some 8’s and get 1-2 grades higher on the resubs so idk.

I noticed everybody that gets a grade lower than a 10 is always wondering what’s wrong with it from PSA because they don’t tell you what’s wrong with the card

My question is why do I see so many PSA 6 cards that are regraded or no one can see why it graded a 6? My thought is someone making the labels has some dyslexic going on. I sent in a ultra modern card with a fuzz corner also and got a 10. I have seen a bunch of those, I think it's a cutting issue in the production.

Not all companies grade the same.…. You’ll see that consistency is important when finances or business is involved! Having 120+ graders and charging customers more if a higher grade enhancing the value should say enough. Sadly in the end it’s greed (imo) that this company thrives on. There is a company that’s been around longer and still hasn’t changed their grading standards.🤷‍♂️

This is where grader notes would help out in justifying their grades. However, it would lengthen every submission if they did. Makes you really wonder what kinds of quotas the graders have to reach every day.

The more interesting part is that not one but two graders looked at your six and deemed it to be a six. Their own grading procedures page states it. If the second grader thinks lower they will not change it but higher they can. Has anyone ever seen PSA comment on these issues that keep happening like this? Subjectivity between a 9 and a 10 is acceptable. A range of 6-10 is not. Buy the card not the grade was never more true

Meanwhile, in an alternate universe... Person A has been in the hobby for 30+ years. Person B has been in the hobby for 2 years. Lets say they are Uncle and nephew. Person A has considerable knowledge and experience...and person B sees that and has a major amount of respect for it...also, he's family. Both A and B go to a card show. B buys a dozen or so raw cards with the intention in grading them. A looks at the cards B purchased and congratulates him on the purchase. A tells B they are extremely nice cards and all definitely in mint condition....he adds that they would definitely grade high but he doesn't see the need to grade them. B tells A that he understands that and he thanx him for his opinion but he still intends on grading them. So B has someone he respects tell him that his cards are high grade. Someone with knowledge and experience. And B did not have to pay A anything. However....B will send his cards through the mail to people he doesn't know...to a place he's never been simply for the opinion of a 3rd party and the eventual encapsulation. Also...lets not forget B is paying a decent sum of money for each individual card...and this grading company is busy so they will have his cards for months...in some cases for over a year. And if they grade any of his cards higher than expected...B will have to pay more just to get his cards back. Even when B gets his cards back and he sees the grades...he doesn't agree with some of them...even A sees that some grades are absolutely to low. B cannot ask the grading company how they came to that conclusion...because the grading company doesn't do that sort of thing. A and B cannot understand why the grading company is so respected in the hobby when they offer no transparency to their loyal customers and furthermore they charge them more than the stated amount for the grading service because they "feel" the card is worth more today than it was months ago when they received cards from B. So the grading company EXPECTS you to just do something without question or else your cards are held hostage....but when the customer wants some transparency or accountability for a grade the customer feels is unjust or a simple mistake...they are told absolutely not....but the grading company will take more money if you crack that case and send the card back in to be graded all over again. Make it make sense.
