500 ft - 150 m RULE :
An aircraft MUST maintain an altitude of 500 feet or 150 meters above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may NOT be operated closer than 500 feet or 150 meters to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure!!!!
And ALWAYS listen to your instructor.. Safe flying ;)
And just for a record I did file my accident report online with Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada of Canada!!
.. CONCLUSION ..
I made 4 mistakes :
1. Did not take HEAD wind seriously enough !!
2. Overestimated penetration ability - limited ability of a single surface glider !!
3. I FLEW OVER AN UNKNOWN HUMP AND EXPECTED TO GET LIFT ( like on a normal hill ) AND INSTEAD ENCOUNTERED SINK AND AT THE END STALLED GLIDER WHICH CONCLUDED MY CRASH !!
4. MY LAST AND "BIGGEST'' MISTAKE .. I FLEW ..TOO LOW .. TOO SLOW !!!!

This Sunday I start training again and this time I intend to continue through to cliff launching, ridge soaring and cross country. Even before I got sick, I was surprised by how much physical strength I needed to exert for ground control. I didn't remember that being a struggle 30-something years ago! OK. Watched the whole video. that sky floater should have been up on top of the heap in those conditions! it appeared to me that the glider was flying in perpetual mush on the verge of stalling the whole flight. either the hang point was a little too far back or there was a tendency for the pilot to be pushing out on the bar habitually. several times the glider could clearly be seen porpoising (trying to drop its nose to gain flying speed). my advice would be to consciously try to fly a little faster. Listen to the sound of the airspeed past your helmet. a little more speed and you will be surprised at how fluid you control inputs will feel. you won't feel like your fighting to coax the glider to turn. My analasis for what it is worth!! worth thinking about.

Ivan, thanks for putting the video out for people to see. It's really hard to be humble after a crash like this, and accept criticism from people who may (or may not) know the various things you did wrong. I commend you for that. That said, there are a number of things that you can look forward to changing, and flying too close to obstacles is only a very small one. Getting too close to objects, the trees in this case, was not the primary issue. Getting too close to the trees was the final result of doing a number of things wrong from quite early on. The launch was marginal, too high an angle of attack, you pushing out to try to get airborne. Work on launching with a lower angle of attack and more speed. Second, for pretty much the entire flight you are flying too slow, pushing out over and over again. Pushing out like that does not make you go up. Lift makes you go up. Pushing out does not let you squeak over obstacles, it makes you descend into them. Your best glide is FASTER then min sink, so if you want to get somewhere, glide somewhere, clear terrain, you need to pull in a bit, not push out to try to float over it. Learn about polars and speeds to fly. In fact, I'd wager that you were creating probably the least optimal glide slope by pushing out so far that you were stalling the root area of your glider, significantly degrading your glide. Kind of a slight mushing everywhere you went, guaranteeing a poor glide, a poor change of fighting any head wind, and a poor ability to get out away form the hill. Finally, you were probably focusing so much on trying to float and get up that you were not watching the valley and LZ become less and less of an achievable target. Learn to fly with some speed, learn your polars, learn your speeds to fly, and open your perspective to the entire environment around you, not just the very small bubble within a couple of seconds of travel.

Even a very easy glider like the Falcon loose roll authority before actually mushing or stalling when flying that slow. Probably what caused that non intentional turn to the left and over the flat terrain were there are no way out else than the treetops.

I agree with earlier commenters on two points. 1st is thanks for sharing and I hope you didn't get hurt. I'm a novice hang glider pilot so it's nice to see what can happen when you make mistakes. I recently had a tow line break on me and I put myself in a bad position, however, I was lucky to have height on my side so I made it out ok. 2nd is that it seems you were flying way too slow...maybe even stalling from time to time even right after take off. It seems you were going down so fast because you were stalling your way back to earth. Thanks for sharing.

Expecting lift from a hill and not getting it - I know that feeling! I fly sailplanes out of Hope (and I've been in the Golden area a few tiles when launching out of Invermere) and there's been more than a few times I went to a ridge expecting lift because of the shape of the terrain and orientation of the wind and found nothing at all. I've always kept enough speed and altitude that I've never crashed in 1300 hours of soaring but this year I came damn close. I hit some bad turbulence, probably rotor, on our "house ridge" a place where I've never experienced anything like that before. I've been doing the same reviewing and evaluation of my flying that day that you are doing.

The L13 Blanik was what I learned to fly in and I still miss them! I liked the DG-500 videos. My club bought a 505 a few years back and it's a great ship. Never flown an ASW-28 but I own an ASW-15b. My all time favorite is the ASW-12... I know it's crazy to want a 44:1 ship which doesn't have dive brakes but I do!

@@DumbledoreMcCracken It's the same, on a hangglider generally minimum sink is slightly slower than trim and we push out the bar to slow down. So he's just talking about the balance all soaring pilots face when climbing. Minimizing sink rate while not stalling any part of the wing and retaining whatever maneuverability is required to optimize the thermal.

Glad you put the whole video with analysis, Ivan. It allows to learn faster since you see all the mistakes. The other comments are good. From what I see, you could easily have avoided that crash by flying in front of the butte, ie. in front of the cliff. You would have been quite low and not make it to the LZ but you would have made it to the marsh, possibly dry area. You should learn a bit of aerology for hang gliders. Know where the lift and thermals are and sink and rotors are.

It was terrible, I heard branches braking off on the way down what slowed me, thanks god , or I would not be around now, didn't even think about deploying parachute because so close flying distance from the tree tops, I did couple mistakes which at the end led to crash, conclusion: always drink more water than you need and use your brain not you hart to fly ;), safe flying..... ...After viewing the first couple minutes of footage, I could understand how that tree landing mishap could happen...e.g., upwind mountains probably were roughing up the ridge lift and thermals, making for ratty, inconsistent, unreliable lift with random sinking air...pilots flying too slowly (stay near best glide!), trying to get more lift but too close to stalling. A very, very scenic site, but looks challenging from perspective of getting nice coherent lift & thermals due to topography and variations in that valley ahead - river, etc., marking hot and cold spots.

I would have pushed out from that hill way earlier, the day was marginal at best. Always err on the side of safety and head for a safe LZ. Also you seem to be virtually stalling the kite rather than keeping the wind flow optimal over the wings.

Glider cost new one is around 4000 us depending what options you choose for the falcon and 5000 us for sport 2 double surface wing glider, cheers

You had other glide paths just moments before fixating on the one that ended in tree tops; this was akin to motoring home, finding the garage door shut- and driving into it anyway. For all practical purposes, the enumerated list on the video highlights symptoms while only brushing up against cause. Before correcting deficiencies, you've moved on to a Sport2- perhaps thinking "if only I could penetrate, I would have avoided the crash". This video from August of last year shows continued struggle judging glide path; knowing that, you left plenty of field in front of you- a sound hedge against going long: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3OVe4SBgtN-o5Y It's not uncommon for overloaded pilots to lack the ability to adapt. While developing the capacity to handle challenges, continue to emulate what experienced pilots *always* do: hedge against the unknown. That's going to require you to recognize what you don't know- in this case, future lift/sink and lack of ability to accurately judge your glide path. Always be asking yourself "if I only find sink, is this path safe? With what margin?" When the answer is "I don't know", change course for the closest approximation of a sure thing. I'm sure you've heard this before- but it bears repeating: to judge your current glide path, look at your target. Is it falling in your field of view? At the current sink rate, you will overfly the target. Is it rising in your field of view? At the current sink rate, you fall short of the target. Is it neither rising nor falling? At the current sink rate, you will reach goal. Put a cone in the middle of your LZ and practice judging your glide path on every single landing. You'll find that you'll have to account for ground effect much more with the Sport2 you're flying- and make decision much faster -than if still flying the Falcon. Do yourself a favor by flying the Falcon until you can nail your spot landing EVERY TIME - and only after consider revisiting the Sport2. Always arrive at the LZ with enough altitude to fly a survey of the entire field so that you can plan your approach knowing what monkey wrench the air is going to throw at you.

You seem to be porpoising around well before the crash, as if you're flying far too slowly. The glider goes up, stalls or mushes, and drops, up and drop, many times. Are you pushing out too much? Flying faster will give you much better penetration, even in a single surface glider (up to a point). Of course it's hard to know for sure without being there in the glider, in the conditions you encountered, so take this with a grain of salt.

+Ivanglide Likely both. But in this case it is a true question. Having flown at Mount Seven and having landed in the actual landing zone I was amazed to see on the video that the pilot did not look like they were any where near the LZ (perhaps this is a problem with the perspective from the video). I mean it appears to me that the pilot is miles away from the LZ. Perhaps you didn't experience that way. It looks like the pilot is just flying near the trees and lands in them and there is no connection what so ever with the landing zone. If you don't want it to appear that way and you don't want your comments in the video to appear to be completely off base perhaps you should try to clarify exactly how far you are from the LZ. Just your friendly observer here.

+Davis Straub .. sorry for immediate attack that is probably because the pilot was me .. hehe and you are completely right perspective is dense, and everything looks so close .. the actual distance from take off to LZ is around 4 km .. or so ( 5 km by road ).. I totally misunderstood you and felt bullied but if your comment ( question ) is sincere I apologize .. :) Because the main reason I decided to put this video after 2.5 years is purely educational purpose to show people what not to do and to always keep the distance from anything at any given moment while flying .. cheers .. :D

+Davis Straub yes that is right but if I cleared the tree tops I would make It probably tight but still .. because I was also high at that point but still lower than I should be anyway .. it is much safer to be higher, than trade height for distance and not vice versa what I did !!

Hangliding always put me right off until recently when I discovered they wear a parachute! I know it sounds dumb, but there never looked like a flyer ever equips a chute on any gliding video I've seen / people in the air. Now it appeals alot more knowing they DO! Now, if I could only find the balls

I flew for over a decade and in that time the only person i saw without a 'chute was on the training hill where it's of little use. Carrying a 'chute is one thing, having a properly packed and prepared parachute is another. The critical element however, is knowing how to deploy it and practicing that skill indoors regularly.

Truly a much simpler way to fly, the downside is that without an airframe you are at mercy of the weather much more. Two of the best pilots I know were fine in hanggliders but were killed in paragliders. Fly safe!

Hieronymous Bosch Ouch! I am so sorry to hear they are gone. Flying in premium conditions isn't always possible, but in any questionable conditions, my feet stay locked to the Earth. I was tossed around before, it was very exciting and dangerous. It won't happen again.

Bro, you where flying super risky since the launch, you pulled the bar way to much at launch, with a bad stall launching could be serious. It also looks like you are used to fly in almost stall all the time, you are constantly stalling the wing, it seems your fly mode is pushing the bar, even more on downwind. Thank god you are alive but I would advise you to let your wing fly alone at the speed it needs to fly. Also please never turn towards the mountain. This sport does not allow many bad habits like the ones are shown without bad consequences. Think about this, if you have take off or launch 99 times and no crash do you think you are doing things right? The Answer is that it could be you are doing things 1percent wrong so at your 100th take off you crash. Having no accidents does not mean you are doing things right.
